CIN3 cells, lots of bleeding, pain and swollen cervix

Hi,

I’m 31 and had my first smear 6 months ago (which I know is bad!) as I was always too scared.

After my smear I had bleeding and pain, I was then told I had CIN3 cells and had to go for a colposcopy. I had the biopsy and cells removed with a wire ring, I was told my cervix was covered in them.  I was in so much agony for a couple of weeks afterwards and had to get tablets from the doctors to stop the bleeding. Results were they were pre-cancerous and to come back for a smear in 6 months.

Ive gone back today for my smear and the nurse said my cervix was very inflamed and bleeding and has referred me back to hospital. I’ve been in a lot of pain and had bleeding again since the smear this morning. I’ve also been having dull pain in my cervix for the past month or so.

I’d just like some advice as in every other case I’ve read they haven’t had the severe pain like I’ve had. It seems quite likely I’ll have to have the cells removed again as the nurse could see them just by looking, does this mean I could need a hysterectomy?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hello Amelia,

    Thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear abut this, you must be feeling very uncomfortable.

I am sorry but no one is able to tell you if you will need treatment and if it would be a hysterectomy at this stage.  You need to have your cervix looked (colposcopy)  at in more detail and may need to wait for a biopsy result before knowing what treatment is best for you. Although biopsy and treatment can sometimes be done at the same time.  I think bearing in mind you have had only one previous treatment it is unlikely you will be asked to have a hysterectomy.

The pain, inflammation and bleeding you are experiencing may not have anything to do with having abnormal cervical cells, and could be caused by another health problem such as infection.  But, again I cannot know for sure.

I hope you are seen and know more about your situation soon.

You would be welcome to give us a call to talk about this,  the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline.

  • Hi Amelia,

I know this is a difficult time, waiting and worrying.  Don't feel bad about waiting to go for an appointment, you have taken the steps you needed to address your symptoms. I think I would focus on the fact that 6 months ago the cells were pre-cancerous. You might need some additonal treatment but you can do it. Look forward to the time you will feel better again, it will happen!  I am a cervical cancer survivor so I know what it is like to be poked and prodded and looked at by all sorts of medical people. No fun, but, I got used to it. Good luck to you, come back and tell us how things progress.

    Laura x

  • hi Amelia,

I have had the exact same, minus not having received the results for my LLETZ yet. I went to the Doctor yesterday who told me my cervix was surrounded in blood so they could not see it clearly and that it was very inflamed. I rang the Colposcopy clinic who said this isn’t normal and to go to my GP. I can’t get any contact from them until Monday which will be a phone appointment and likely referral back to gynaecology. No one seems to know what’s going on and I feel like I am going around in circles also not sleeping from the worry.

Did you get anywhere, what was the outcome? I’d really appreciate someone’s experience with this.

    thank you

  • Hi Jane,

In the end it was all fine for me, I was sick with worry too, so try not to worry too much. I had a minor infection which was treated with antibiotics and the precancerous cells were all gone. It’s crazy the pain I was in and it all turned out to be ok, but it did.

I hope you have the same results or better.

  • Hi, I've always had some kind of cell change and in past 20 years have had 3 treatments of laser or coloscopy. I normally have 2 smears a year now and the last biopsy showed I'd CIN 3. I'm back to the clinic for another colopsophy on Tuesday but reading about it on google it saying it's an STD. I'm been celibate 5 years so if this is true could it have been my ex husband was involved?

  • Hi Mkl

The hpv virus is sexually transmitted, and the strains which cause abnormal cells are transmitted by genital contact. Many, many people carry the virus, and once you have the virus you will always have it although it doesn’t always cause cell changes. It can lie dormant in your body for years, and only when it’s active does it cause cell changes. The virus could have been caught from any sexual partner if you have had more than one, and you would never be able to know where you got it as there is no test for men.

CIN3 will usually require treatment and at the colposcopy they may take a biopsy, or more than one. Good luck with your procedure on Tuesday. x

  • Thank you for your reply. I only knew it was CIN 3 at the appointment for the biopsy. My normal consultant was unavailable as he was seconded to the hospital gynae for COVID patients. I saw a different guy. He mentioned Stage 3 after my last smear and I asked.."stage 3 of what?" So he explained CIN 3. Then I got the letter for the colposcopy. I've had it before but didn't realise the extent of it, just thought I needed treatment. I am currently experiencing really bad pain in my lower back and cramps similar to period cramps since the biopsy 6 weeks ago. Anyway, I'm being looked after and will ask more questions on Tuesday.

  • Definitely ask as many questions as you can think of. Having CIN3 shouldn’t cause pain, and it seems a long time after the biopsy to be experiencing pains from that so I would definitely mention that. I had a bit of cramping for a couple of days after 2 biopsies but it didn’t last. x

  • Thank you. I will. I would have expected it after the biopsy but only happening now. I will know on Tuesday if it's linked.

  • Hi sorry to jump on, my have had very similar experience with the pains etc but mine started with heavy irregular bleeding about 12 months ago (baring in mind I found out I also have numerous fibroids) and lately followed by all the symptoms you have mentioned I am 30 with 4 children my cervix is swollen and I had results of cin3 last week I am booked in for LLETZ tomorrow. I have mentioned my fibroids and it could be those that are causing my pains, it's the back and all over sever aching since Sunday I am concerned about the struggles to eat with a knife and fork today because my arms and shoulder ache so badly it's sound silly and I'm usually good with pain but it's horrendous at the moment and I feel like I am carrying a heavy baby and as if I have pelvic girdle pain lol. Really hope today wasn't too uncomfortable il dreading tomorrow. Any advice would be appreciated and could you let us know how things go I really hope it's good news xx
