Failed colonoscopy

the prep was fine. On the day opted for gas and air but had the canula put in incase I found it to painful. Ok at the start but not very long into the procedure it was becoming increasingly painful. I was given sedation and pain relief but they didn't seem to do anything . The pressure I felt in my bowl just kept getting more and more painful, I started to cry and in the end they had to stop. Only went 30cms into the bowl!!! Found a large polyp and found I had diverticulitis so have to have another done. Looking at the note they gave me they gave 2mcg of midazolam and fentanyl 100mcg. Not very much in my opinion. Said I was anxious +++ well I was because the pain didn't subside! What a carry on!

  • Failed colonospy

    19/7/2021

Had colonospy this morning the pain was horrific I WITHDREW CONSENT as it says on my report. I recieved 50 mcg Fentanyl and 3 mg Midazolam it did not sedate me doctor not happy but then neither was I. CT scan is next test

  • Hi I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy Friday gone , the pain was immense , I also had the midazolam mix given as I got in theatre ( the mgs were not written down!)  it does not work as a sedation in any way for colonoscopy ! But for three  days Iv had the reaction to it which has been horrid . I have had many colonoscopies etc done by a surgeon in spire as happens , and went to sleep as the drug he used was put in and woke up afterwards no pain and relaxed apart from the air needing release that is pumped in in the procedure , I have rang my doctor , a nurse rang me back and she said the pain and side effects the last days is because I am older ! I don't think so!

I asked her to trace the sedation that I used to have on many

colonoscopies before and the sedation virtually knocked me out but she said she could not find it on her computer .

As I have been spaced out and depressed for three days with

the midazolam , and utter pain with the procedure I can not see the point of midazolam for a colonoscopy , I mean why cause so much pain using it and I really do not like what it has done to me the last three days . I read that they use only midaxolam in the nhs , and you recover quicker  and quickly out of the hospital!
you may appear awake and able to get out fast but the aftermath for me has been terrible , I have cried for three  days and so depressed  with this drug .  Never again !!

  • Yesterday I had a failed Colonoscopy at a private hospital. I also had Midazolam (4mg)  it absolutely did nothing I was totally allert and coherent. Like many other contributors I had to call a stop to the procedure. It was excruciatingly painful but the doctor just put stopped because of discomfort on my notes!  I like everyone else don't understand why they use this drug but I will say without comment it appears to be the cheaper option as no anesthesiologist is needed. I have had colonoscopies in the past and have never had this problem before as to the best of my knowledge there was on those occasions an anaesthetist present.

  • I had my first Colonoscopy today and was very anxious but thought it would be ok as I have a high pain threshold and had 3 babies with out too much bother. I read up on other peoples experiences which on the whole seemed ok. Well it was excruciating I was in so much pain it made me cry and scream out, even though I had a very small amount of sedation plus a bit more it made no difference at all. The procedure had to be aborted I wanted to put this on here so people really do know what to expect it was horrendous. The staff were lovely and suggested we stop as they could see how much pain I was in. Surely more sedation should be administered for this terrible experience

  • Thank you to you all.
I have just had the same experience today. Excruciating pain so bad I screamed and hyper ventilated. I was told to calm down. I did not feel sedated at all. I was so upset thinking I was a failure for not being able to go through it all (got about half way). Severe swelling in the anus. Anyway reading what you have all said has made me feel a lot better.

    Thank you again x

  • Sorry to hear so many of you have shared the experience I had a few weeks ago. I cannot understand why patients are being made to go through this experience with inadequate pain relief preparation. Surely if anyone expresses anxiety about the procedure then good pain relief from the outset is a must. I know that colonoscopy is supposed to be the gold standard but if a shorter less intrusive and much less uncomfortable procedure (CTC) is available and shows who needs the invasive procedure, why isn't that done first? It is surely less expensive as it involves radiographer not surgeon and is much quicker. I am so pleased that in future years it is likely only a blood test will be necessary to establish if bowel cancer is an issue. Blood tests should stop this barbaric practice of delivering an excruciating and debilitating procedure to those who might already be significantly unwell. Colonoscopy without adequate pain relief seems to me like an accepted form of modern torture. Maybe we should find out where and by whom these procedures are being conducted to see if there is any element of abuse involved . Having been told by the surgeon it wasn't painful, I for one felt violated by the most recent procedure, having had a previous and relatively well tolerated colonoscopy in the past.

  • I feel a bit guilty as I had a flexi sigmoidoscopy rather than a colonoscopy.

Apparently these are usually not performed under sedation, however I had one 3 years ago and it was hell.

I wasn't offered sedation then but read this time that I can request it - so I did!

It was 100 times better than my previous one. The nurse and medical team were kind and friendly. I was given Midazolam & Fentanyl. I was fully conscious throughout and did not feel sedated but it certainly took the edge of my anxiety.

If I ever needed a full colonoscopy in the future I'd definitely want adequate sedation.

  • I had a virtual colonoscopy today. Apart from discomfort when the gas went it in it was ok. I am post menopausal and not had a period for 4 years but since the procedure this morning I have had vaginal bleeding. Is this normal? It is 15 hours since the procedure and I still feel uncomfortable with period like cramps.

  • I'm clearly in the minority here, but I chose not to have any sedation or pain relief when I had my colonoscopy as I wanted to be able toleave quickly aftertheprocedure. I describe it as uncomfortable and not particularly pleasant, but not painful. There again, I've had 10lb babies without any pain relief (that WAS very very painful) Perhaps I just have a pretty high pain threshold.

  • I had this procedure yesterday with gas and air, I was informed it would be uncomfortable. The whole thing was awful I still have pain in my back, I was in agony, the nurses said it may just be because I'm slim, she said she will stop but I would need to come back and a CT scan. I agreed they stopped then told me I am unable to have a CT as I'm too young (I'm 34) and I now have to go back and have it done again. I don't think I can I will have to hope for the best all is ok, I was rushed out when my BP was low still very dizzy and I couldn't go back. I've had two children, tattoos and piercings and this was anothe level of pain.
