Do i have Periductal Mastitis or IBC

Hi All,

Last month Aug 5th i noticed my left breast suddenly swell up and at the time it was visibly red and hot to touch.. I grew a bra size as well in the next few days. My left breast was feeling heavy but no lumps anywhere but found lumps in my armpits but i put it to glands being inflammed. Days passed by and being mum of 4 i really did not find time to see my gp and besides i did not want to waste time of the doctors.. It increasingly became difficult as my breast was very tender and i struggled to keep bra on or even hug my kids was like painful. So i went to my gp in the end the registar checked me and said il make an urgent breast clinic appointment and i saw them yesterday..

I was examined by 2 doctors and both kept saying left breast axilla tender , lumps in arm pit. The doctor asked if i smoke for which my answer was No, so he went on to explain i could possibly have a Periductal Mastitis but my question was i am not breast feeding my babies the last i did was in June 2017. He did not explain to me anything and said it should clear up in 6 weeks or so and then if it does not to come back for further tests..

I am so tender after the examination and this morning my breast have slightly grown again and its so uncomfortable. Not sure if this is related i am not able to lift my left arm up and when i try it hurts my shoulder and collarbone and pain up to my arm muscle paralled to my nipple (i think i must have hurt my arm surely and this is not related to my breast issue and this has been since aug 5th when my breast had the changes) however the doctor said it was due to the glands swollen underarm and that was causing this..

My husband and i are very unsettled as they did not even do a ultrasound .. God forbid but if its is anything that is .. we have 4 young kids (oldest is 9 and youngest is 20 months) and im 32 years..

My neighbour directed me to your website and asked me to post on here as she said sometimes the doctors miss the early symptoms and if no lump is found in breast then its even difficult unless a scan or mammogram is done. She mentioned to me Inflammation Breast Cancer and she explained to me a little about it and my symptoms do tally with what she said.. Im very anxious and i do not know what my next step should be .. wait for 6 weeks or go back to gp ?

My symptoms so far

Left Breast Tender especially on the right side of the nipple

Skin looks slightly pitted but not orange( which doctor said dont worry its normal )

Left Breast looks and feels heavy

Swollen lumps in my left armpit

I am sorry this is long but i am really lost and slightly fearful of my situation.. Thank you for reading this through and i fully appreciate all your replies xx

  • Anyone there to help me calm my nerves please ... Thank you x

  • Hello there. Don’t know if I’ll be much help here but I’m here if you need to vent.

  • I have recurrent periductal mastitis. It does sound very similar.

My gp referred me to a specialist breast clinic, I had an ultrasound and incision to collect pus for the diagnosis and to determine what antibiotics would work best.

I sincerely hope you haven't got it as it's a miserable disease, I have had it 10+ years and im 37.

Please push your gp & good luck

  • I also had a biopsy tois rule out cancer etc.

  • Hi, I’ve just been through exactly the same. GP said I would need ultrasound but at breast clinic he literally looked at it- touched it and said it’s Periductal mastitis. I was already on antibiotics for it as the GP suspected it. I finished my antibiotics yesterday and the pain and redness are already returning xx

  • Did you get anywhere with your investigation? I am going through a similar thing but my GP literally doesn't know or won't say what it is. After my 4th visit to her today (had antibiotics for mastitis, I'm nursing, and 3 rounds of various steroid and fungal creams today she's ring the breast clinic to see if they'll ''see me"!

  • Hi there, my breast swelled up too,had redness from my nipple and about 3inches around my breast, pain and my nipple became inverted and thick like 4cm instead of a normal flattish nipple.   When I googled my symptoms ibc kept coming up, I convinced myself I had it because there were pictures of ibc breasts that looked exactly like mine,I got to the point where I was thinking the worst.ive lost my mother to cancer and her siblings had cancer too all under the age of 50. It’s very easy to allow yr mind to go to dark places but here is my advice,go to the dr straight away to get it diagnosed because it is highly unlikely to be ibc. It is extremely rare.so please don’t worry like I did.after going to the hospital it turned out to be mastitis at 50yrs old.

  • Hi this reply has really helped me! I'm 54, not had menopause yet and I'm on antibiotics for what the doctor thinks is mastitis. Seems so unusual at my age! I too googled symptoms and it keeps mentioning IBC. Going to have a follow up mammogram after the course of antibiotics. Reading your case really helped. Hopefully this is is a one-off thing - it's painful!

    Thanks and take care

    Zoe x

  • How did you get on? I too am going through this worrying time

  • Hi All,

So 2 years ago i was told it was periductal mastitis and was given a weeks antibiotics and told to lose weight. I did all that and ended up with heavy periods and then getting endometrial ablation (Novasure) for it. The Surgery altered my hormones and my breast never did get better. So 2 years later i have been referred back to breast clinic as i still have breast pain and that is even after a period. Still no lump but dense breast. If aches so bad and nothing makes it better. I have also been recently diagnosed with activethyriod and on 50mcg Levothyroxine. I have stiff painful knees  and sacro joint. My ribs and mid back hurt too and it feels so heavy. I am on heavy pain meds but nothing works. The joint issue started in july and my breast has got worse since september now. Whether any of these is inter related i dont know.

My worse experience was going to breast clinic have 3 male doctors check me and tell me its nothing and as a woman who has had 4 kids should be able to bear the pains. I am scared to go back to the clinic and knowing my husband wont be allowed in. I am sorry i have no actual answers.
