Possible Lymphoma?

Hello there,

ill get straight to the story. I noticed a lump in my neck around April time so booked myself to see my GP. They said it was probably from a infection and gave me Amoxicillin - the antibiotics did nothing to clear the lump. I’ve visited three times since and they still continue to fob me off saying it’s just an infection which will take time to go.

I went last week complaining of headache, ringing in one here (left side the side of the lump), dizziness and feeling aches and what not in my neck and lower back. She felt the neck lump, armpits and groin and only found the one lump in my neck and told me to see her again in a MONTH. I’ve had no scans done, no blood tests, nothing other than antibiotics months ago.

The ringing in my ear doesn’t stop, the aches come and go throughout the day and I am now getting sharp pain in my chest as well as stomach pains, often feeling constipated.

Any ideas on what I should do? Should I go to my go for a 5th and demand a biopsy etc to determine what’s causing this lump to stick around? The headache and ear ringing 24 hours a day is really getting me down and the doctors don’t seem interested in the slightest.

Are ringing ears the symptoms of lymphoma? I’ve searched and searched and can’t see anything of it being related. Sorry for the long post, after six months of being robbed off I’d thought I’d join on here and get some advice from people who know a wee bit more than my gp...shouldn’t be too difficult.

many thanks

  • Hi there, firstly there is nothing more frustrating and stressful trying to find an answer to your medical problem and I sincerely epathise! I am also guessing this is causing you anxiety which does cause ringing in the ears along with a number of other physical symptoms. Stress and anxiety is the last thing you need when trying to deal with what may be cancer.

I too had a lump on my neck everyone told me it was nothing, all blood tests were normal and no other syptoms but I insisted on a biopsy...I'd had the lump about a year 18 mths by now. And to my utter shock I was duagnosed with follicular lymphoma stage 3 grade 4. 8 rounds of RCVP I had 9 years remission. I am currently doing more chemo after relapsing at stage 3 grade 1/2

My advice...keep insisting on further investigation. If it is lymphoma the earlier they get it at a low stage the better. Go with your gut instinct! Praying its nothing more than an over active node which can be tamed. But you need to know to put your mind at rest! Good luck!

  • I don’t understand why gps are so reluctant to do a biopsy. Anything over a month for any lump would surely ring alarm bells, but 18 months is ridiculous!

Worrying even more so that you shown no symptoms for it.

  • To be honest....I went private in the end! Good job I did and fortunate enough to have a husband whose employer offers private medical insurance.

My understanding is that a gp can get things done within 2 weeks if they mention a suspicion of cancer....get your gp to refer you on.

  • Well that was a waste of time.

Just got back from Docs, said its normal "because im thin" and i supposedly have a viral infection.

Had blood test earlier in month to rule out cancers. Load of rubbish IMO

  • Good afternoon, sorry to hear you’ve been messed around so much, I too have the same thing, the first time I went to docs I was told it was a salivary gland... and to suck on a lemon! I wasn’t satisfied so went back and told to watch and wait as they thought it was an enlarged lymph node. Then it grew in size so On my third visit to the docs I finally got referred. I have been seen my ENT, had an ultrasound and a biopsy as they couldn’t be sure on the ultrasound whether it is a branchial cyst or enlarged lymph, so I’m just waiting for the results.

I know it’s draining and very hard but You should go back and don’t take no for an answer, it’s your life in their hands and they’re not taking yours seriously. It’s obviously causing you a great deal of anxiety, like it did me. Have you seen the same doctor each time?

  • Hey there.

Ive seen 3 different docs on 6 occasions. Each have said its either a ongoing infection or totally normal - no idea how a lump in the neck which randomly appears and stays for months on end is normal (?)

They said Lymphoma can be checked via a CBC but that isnt true, it would need a biopsy to see 100% if lymphoma is present, if im wrong soneone feel free to correct me.

Another day and still headache, ringing in my left ear, muscle ache and stomach pain - which docs say is IBS.

The lump is very jelly like, mobile and can cause abit of uncomfatable pain when moving my head left-right.

  • It’s not normal! They should be investigating what is causing it, surely it would of showed in your bloods if you had an infection as well? I had the bloods before my referral and mine came back clear too but they still referred me. Yes I’ve heard you need a biopsy to know what it is for sure, even on my ultrasound they couldn’t define between a cyst or enlarged lymph node so the biopsy was done. Been nearly a week now and haven’t heard back yet the wait is agonising.

i do hope your ok. Wish I could give you some advice on what to do. All I can say is keep being persistent and they will have to refer you. My GP said a lump has to of been there for 6 weeks before they refer you to see if it goes by itself. Like incase it’s a swollen lymph caused by infection. They like to give it time to go down. But yours has been there for some time and I most certainly wouldn’t be happy with it. Even if it’s a swollen lymph due to infection then they need to sort that out regardless don’t they?

  • I asked the doc on my 3rd or 4th visit (I’ve loss track now) and she said an infection probably wouldn’t show on a blood test.

Could be classed has neglect if they continue to dismiss it, ive even moved doctors because getting absolutely nowhere with the previous one..hopefully I’ll have more luck getting a referral there.

Wouldnt be so frustrated if I wasn’t feeling this unwell, haven’t slept for awhile due to the tinnitus in my left ear - I already have tinnitus but this is out of this world for the ringing. Then you have the headaches, aching, stomach pains,  the chills and what not, had this for awhile and it’s just getting regarded has a viral infection.

A lump is a lump, should be taken seriously regardless.

Im only 31 so god knows how this can be regarded as normal.

  • Hi people, just a update.

I visited my new doctors today and saw a nurse about the above. Was shocked nobody had refereed me to a scan, hoping the ringing in ears constantly is stress - boy ive had alot of that recently.

Having tinnitus anyway tells me something isnt right, its 10 times louder than it usually is and can be heard throughout the day, not just at night like I normally had.

Got sharp chest pains last night which scared me, but its this ringing driving me absolutely mental now. The lump I am praying is nothing cancerous, really nervous and guess this doesnt help with any anniexty.

  • Sorry to hear everyone seems to be ignoring you to start with. I'm hoping you are okay now and everything was resolved. I'm going through the same problem, I've had a large lump ( 1 inch wide )  under both ear lobes behind my jaw. They continue to grow after 9 weeks now, in 2 days I'm having an x-ray or scan. I anticipate that i  will only get answers if they do a biopsy . It's all taking soooooo  long , and I'm considering going private now. Ridiculous. Two gps  have agreed I have growing lumps, and both said they didnt know what it was. Seems like they don't really care.....Lol. can't wait much longer cos it's pressing on my nerves, causing alot of discomfort, neck aches, nausea and migraines. I'm in UK, but the NHS is struggling and cutting back financially, so I don't have much confidence in them.

Good luck everyone. I would love to hear how you are all doing now ........
