Lump in thigh.

Hello everyone,

Im 24, a mum of 2 boys ages 3 and 1.

About 2 weeks ago i discovered a sizeable lump in my thigh, i can see it all the time, but its much more pronouced when im climbing stairs or tensing my leg muscles. Its not directly under the skin, but it seems to feel like its more underneath or inside the muscle of my thigh. It doesn't hurt, its hard and does not move.

I went to my GP who said "Firstly, its your leg. Not much can go wrong there" he then said i think you might have torn your muscle. I laughed slightly, because i explained i dont drive, and i cant get out my house because of that. I also have 2 young boys to raise so i get no time to go out excersizing, there is not a lot of reasons why i could of torn my muscle, besides im sure i would have noticed as i believe that would be painful?

He agreed and said yes it would have been painful so it might not be muscular. He has refferred me for a ultrasound to see what this lump is. But the ultrasound appointment isnt for another 2 weeks and im quite worried about leaving it so long if it is something sinistar.

I don't know how long it takes for a tumor to grow, if it is a tumor thinking in worst case senario. But this lump appears to have gotten a bit bigger in the last 2 weeks and its getting unnerving.

Can anyone relate to this story and tell me what happened? what was your outcome? thank you

  • Similar to most of you I discovered a lump in my outer thigh while sitting watching TV. I've messed with it so much it's made my leg ache. I almost cancelled the doctors thinking it's nothing and she seemed concerned as it's deep in the muscle. It's about 3cm so not massive.  Referred for a scan and now in panic it's going to be the end. Hoping by reading some of the comments it's rare to be anything serious but you can't help but freak out a little. I'm 44 and struggling to just get on with things while I wait for a scan. Feel sick with worry.

  • Hiya. I had it checked out not so long after my post there are no concerns and what so ever. I think as long as it's not causing you any pain to the touch you have nothing to worry about. They identified mine as lipoma and that it shouldn't affect me and that it is just a benign lump(not harmful)

  • That's great news! Glad yours was nothing of concern. It's not painful to touch at all but I think I'm conscious it's there so I'm walking with awareness and causing muscle pain in my knee. But if I press the lump it doesn't hurt. I've just got to try and ignore it while I wait for a scan and stop looking for the worst case scenario. Making myself sick with worry, which is rediculous but it's comforting to hear others are ok. Did you wait long for a scan. Doctor used the words "emergency" scan which spooked me. But did say the NHS may reject it.. which I don't quite understand. I should of asked more questions :)

  • I just went to my GP they did a visual examination and told me I was clear I haven't had a problem with it since many years later I'm sure if it was bad it may have taken me by now. Researching anything on the internet is the worst possible thing to do. It stopped me sleeping and out my anxiety through the roof. Just remain calm and I'm sure it will all go well.

  • Just to update for anyone else googling and worrying. Scan was today, ultrasound showed it's a fatty lump on top of the thigh. So best news I could've hoped for. Report going to GP as doctor was like a greyhound racing to get out. Not one for reassurance and talking lol.
The lump felt hard and appeared to be in the thigh so if you do get a worrying response from GP. Just hold out for the scan.

  • That's fantastic news. I have the exact same thing. It's called a lipoma. Glad all went well.

  • I have a lump on my inner upper thigh, I got told it may be an ‘inguinal hernia’ but I think not. I had this lump a month or two ago and I noticed whenever I put heat on it , it went down and then it just went away after id say a week maybe… but now 4 days ago I have it back again, it goes down with heat but it keeps going back to its original size and I can’t get a GP appointment whatsoever and it’s stressing me the hell out. The lump is hard, it slightly moves and it a little reddish purple around it, it very slightly hurts whenever you push down on it, im worried sick
