Lump left neck supraclavicular area

This is my first post here and needless to say I'm pretty scared. I'm 40 yrs old and a mum to 3 little delights. I found a lump in my collarbone area on the left and sought my doctors advice. He immediately referred me to ENT who put the camera through my nose and found nothing there. He has booked me in for a CT scan in 2 days time and says I will need a biopsy as he could feel a hard lump. I am on a rollercoaster of emotions as you can imagine. My doc did give me antibiotics which made me feel ill tbh and I feel a lot better after finishing them. Anyone else in this awful situation? I could do with someone to talk to about this as I desperately try to hide it from the little people in the house so as not to scare them just yet! Anxiety levels are through the roof!!!!!

  • Hi, i'm doing OK with treatment at the moment thankyou for asking!

And breathe! I completely get how stressful it can be when you are just sat there overthinking everything! I'd take comfort in the fact that all your tests have come back clear and your doctor isn't concerned.

I was rushed through testing because they were concerned. My blood test came back "borderline". My chest xray showed the inflammed lymph nodes in the middle of my chest between my lungs, as did the CT scan. (I have the lymphoma in my neck and centre of my chest). I had an ultrasound after to do a biopsy of the lump on my neck which confirmed my diagnosis.

I cant speak for everyone, but the lump in my neck was quite big, you could see it sticking out if i turned my neck. And it didn't move when I pressed it, and it wasn't painful at all.

I hope you get the bottom of it soon, try not to overthink and don't google anything, easier said than done I know!

Let me know if you have any other questions x

  • Hi Everybody, this forum has been really helpful but I wondered if you could help me at all.

I have been reading this forum and also searching all over the internet for days. I recently woke up one morning with swelling just above my left collar bone. I went to my GP who referred me as an urgent for an ultrasound of my neck. I had an examination at the hospital and they said there was a lump around 3cm x 4cm located in my supraclavicular fossa and confirmed I need an ultrasound. I have had a cough on and off for about 6 months and for the last few days I feel like I have something stuck in my throat. My glands aren't swollen under my chin which I would have thought would be if it was an infection. I have searched google for the last couple of days because I can't think about anything else, but it comes up with a different answer dependant on what my search is.

I just want to know what the chances are and I know I should just wait for the results, but its hard to not research it. Sorry just working myself up I think, I am sure it will be fine, I know it will but I don't understand why my glands wouldn't be enlarged or inflammed if it was that?

    I am 32 years old,

    Thank you

  • Hi I'm in the same boat,

lump appeared Wednesday roughly the size of a golf ball, sent pictures in to my GP on the Thursday(coronvirus) asked my history and other symptoms, then prescribed antibiotics as it's painful and inflamed.

Friday morning call from hospital ultrasound department booked in for Monday evening.

     Need to stop googling.

painless now so AB's must be working. Lump fells firm I'm not sure if it moves or not, depends what direction I give it a nudge. The top is a bit red.

just need tomorrow to hurry up.

  • I'd found this thread by doing the usual google searching! On Thursday night I happened to find a lump which since going to an out of hours walk in GP I'm told is a left side supraclavicular lump / swollen gland and recommends contacting my GP on Monday to have an ultrasound. I'd also felt a small breast lump on the right. I had a breast examination and nil abnormalities. Since yesterday my whole left side has gone in to spasm. I'm in agony and can barely move or use my left arm, it's super painful to even look left or right. I can't lie down or sit up without pain. I'm in contact with 111 awaiting a call from Medoc. When I'd gone to the doctor I had a dull pain and asked if could be related and he'd said yes. Finding it hard to find anything that relates the two. If I didn't have the lump I wouldn't be so concerned but seems odd to me to have such pain on the same side and develop so quickly. Any thoughts?

  • Hey, thank you for keeping this thread going first of all.

Three days ago I noticed some swelling just above my collarbones close to my neck/shoulder area. Im not sure how long it's been this way, but I've only noticed it recently.

When I tried to examine the swelling on both sides with my fingers, I was able to feel two swollen lymph nodes on both sides (one on each side). The lump on the right side is bigger and feels like the size of a thumb nail while the left side feels like the size of a pea. The lymph nodes feel hard, but I am able to move them. They are not tender or painful to touch. I've had no cough or signs of infection at all in the last 6-12 months so I'm certain the swollen lymph nodes are not infection related.

I have mentally prepared myself for the worst to be honest, because I think I have some of the symptoms too. I'm 25 years old, I have night sweats and I've noticed a pressure in my chest which got worse over the last year. I wake up feeling breathless most mornings, though I have no cough at all. I have difficulty falling asleep since April, I almost pull an all-nighter once every two days, I cannot fall asleep... I had my bloods taken 3 months ago and then again a week ago -  the results showed mildly elevated monocytes and C reactive protein levels both times.

I went to the GP today to explain everything going on. She examined my collar bone, neck, armpits and groin area. The GP confirmed she didn't feel any swollen lymph nodes elsewhere, only the two on my collar bones. She said she thinks it's unlikely to be lymphoma, but it cannot be ruled out until we do further tests. The GP referred me for US, but because the NHS waiting time is at least a few weeks, I've decided to go private next week.

I'm very concerned I am mentally prepared for the worst case. I'll keep you all updated. Good luck everyone! We are strong! :)

NOTE: I had my 2nd dose Pfizer vaccine last week. Maybe that's why my collar bone lymph nodes are swollen? Any thoughts?

  • Hi, I have just found this chat through frantically searching the internet about lumps I have found above my collarbone on the left side, I suspect it is swollen lymph nodes and now I'm so worried that it is cancer!! Everything ok the internet I've found is quite grim and I am so worried. I went to the gp on Thursday who has referred me for US as she said it does appear that it is my lymph nodes that are swollen. I am 34 and a mother of 2 little ones and I'm going on holiday tomorrow and all I can do is worry, I know it will be a long wait for the US and I am already suspecting the worse! I did have my 1st covid vaccine on Monday (Moderna) so initially thought that must be the cause but when researching, it's normally swollen lymph nodes in the armpit of the arm in which you had the injection that swells or around the site, so I ruled that out and can't help but think it's more sinister, I'm considering paying for a private scan after my holiday as I don't think I can cope with the worry for weeks, I know I should be more positive but I'm just thinking the worse!

  • Hi Jade,

Having researched briefly it appears that the Moderna vaccine is causing supraclavicular lymphadenopathy in many and mostly in women, so it's very possible that your swollen nodes are a reaction to the vaccine.

It's easy for me to say don't worry, but having experienced the anxiety around this I know how scary it is, but really for me it was more a case of over analysis that was keeping me so anxious, I'd say if try your best to leave the Googling to a minimum it will 100% help. When I was Googling these symptoms before, I felt ignored any other possible scenarios and gravitated towards the worst case.

If this swelling has become noticeable shortly after vaccination I'd  focus on that as the main cause for now. Let yourself rest, the over researching will only cause you to panic, take the time to try to chill and if you feel a private US or consultation is helping make you feel more at ease go for it.

I hope all is well, just remember, any medical problem researched online tends to gravitate towards a grim outcome, this even more so. Give your self a day or two off from researching, try your best to give yourself a break from worrying, note how you feel outside of the swollen nodes, do you have many other symptoms? Note them (don't research them) and give that info to your consultant or GP.

Wishing you all the best :)

  • Thank you David, I decided to put the phone down and stop googling early hours this morning as it was just getting me upset, I did come across a study about the moderna vaccine and how it is causing supraclavicular nodes but it just doesn't seem as well reported in the UK as in the USA, so decided to put the phone down at that point with the peace of mind that it could possibly be due to the vaccine. I'm going on holiday later today and I'm just trying to put it out of my mind and have a great time away with my little ones! (Hopefully too busy with them to worry!) I'm naturally a worrier anyway and think it's worse when I'm alone with my thoughts in bed at night! Thanks for the message, as it makes me feel more reassured that it could be the vaccine rather than what I thought was myself clutching at straws!! X

  • Hi Jade :)

I think that's a good shout, enjoy the time away and trust the process, it's so easy to worry in these situations and being a worrier also I understand what it's like. Anytime it enters your head, think of the advice you would give a friend or family member, what would you say to them if the roles where reversed? Focus on that until you're home and have your appointment.

    All the best :)

    David

  • Hi Jade,

I completely understand how anxious you are and googling all of the possibilities is a natural reaction, although won't bring you peace of mind. I hope you can get your appointment as soon as possible. Going on holiday with your little ones sounds fantastic and even though there may be times where you're distracted by this, do try and keep busy with them and enjoy yourself. There are so many reasons for swollen nodes that it would be impossible to diagnose yourself and trying to do so is just so stressful. It's natural to think the worst but please don't rule out other causes. I hope you can enjoy your holiday and spend some quality time with your little family.

    Thinking of you.
