Lump left neck supraclavicular area

This is my first post here and needless to say I'm pretty scared. I'm 40 yrs old and a mum to 3 little delights. I found a lump in my collarbone area on the left and sought my doctors advice. He immediately referred me to ENT who put the camera through my nose and found nothing there. He has booked me in for a CT scan in 2 days time and says I will need a biopsy as he could feel a hard lump. I am on a rollercoaster of emotions as you can imagine. My doc did give me antibiotics which made me feel ill tbh and I feel a lot better after finishing them. Anyone else in this awful situation? I could do with someone to talk to about this as I desperately try to hide it from the little people in the house so as not to scare them just yet! Anxiety levels are through the roof!!!!!

  • Hi :)

Glad to hear your results all went well. Just curious if you have had tour US/S for November yet?

I only ask as I found an enlarged left tonsil about 4 months ago which I went to my GP about as my uncle had tonsil cancer last year but I also noticed a swollen left supraclavicular lymph node also which is getting slowly larger. I'm a pretty level headed person and know that at my age (early 20s) the chances of any type of metastatic cancer is VERY low but just curious to see if anything else came of this?

I have an ENT appointment in a month and so far neither of the 2 doctors who looked at the tonsil/swollen nodes took my concerns too seriously so I imagine it's not much to worry about. But glad to see you're doing well and feeling better after your results, let me know how your US/S goes :) Thanks!!

  • Hi there

Yes I had my ultrasound which showed that the node has now completely resolved. Bit of a long story but this was done when I was recently admitted to hospital. I had felt unwell for a few weeks and gradually got worse. Ended up with pneumonia and acute pancreatitis where bloods revealed resolving glandular fever. The consultant seems to think this is all related. More bloods due next week to check inflammation markers are resolving but I will say that I feel far better than i did! Hopefully I will be able to rest when I know they are that I was just unlucky enough to pick up a virus sending my body a bit loopy for a while lol.

I do hope your appointment goes well at the ENT department and it puts your mind at rest. Good to hear you're level headed and positive. Let us know how it all goes?

  • Oh well that's good you're feeling better now! :) Sorry to hear about all your health woes recently however.

Thank you very much, I will keep you posted although I'm sure it won't be anything too interesting to feed back!

  • Hi, I found your post due searching for info for my 8 year old daughter. Over a week ago she noticed a lump in her neck. We took her to the pharmacy initially and they thought it might be a cyst due to the location and size. We then went to out of hours doctor who thought it might be a cyst as well.

When the doctors surgery opened on a Monday we took her for a check-up and the doctor noticed a few small lymph nodes on her right-hand side and said the lump on the left-hand side was a supraclavicular lymph node, she told us to come back after a week as it was most likely related to a mild cold she had the week earlier. We returned after a week and nothing has changed she still has the swelling with no tenderness and is well in her self other than the swollen lymph node.

The doctor has now given us a 2-week referral and never gave much more info ( I am calling her again tomorrow). In the meantime, I’ve booked a private paediatric ENT specialist so that I can try and get her looked at sooner.

Me and my wife are worried sick and trying not to look too much up on google but anything I’ve seen with lack of tenderness and supraclavicular nodes all point to grim diagnosis.

Sorry for rambling on, so worried and struggling to find info that’s not medical journals etc online.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi there,

I am so sorry to hear of your worries, particularly when the patient is your young daughter. I do agree that Dr Google will tell you nothing but grim news. However, you must remember that Google is in fact not a doctor so please do not take it's word for anything. I do completely understand your fear and can only say that I felt exactly the same way. I had one very large lump on the left side, you could actually see it sticking up over my bone. I had my ENT consultation where a camera was put through my nose looking for any abnormalities. Nothing showed up so I was referred for a biopsy. But when I got to the ultrasound, he didn't seem so concerned and asked to me to come back at a later date. He was quite reassuring that he did not suspect anything sinister at that point. I can honestly say that at that point in time I did not feel poorly. It took a good few weeks before I started to feel ill. It was almost like the enlarged lymph node was telling me I was poorly before I felt it. I didn't have any other enlarged nodes, only the one. Our body can be wonderful at telling us that something may be wrong but doesn't have the power to explain what it is. I had no idea I was poorly right up to just before I was admitted to hospital. Even then it took a while for them to run tests and try to piece together the puzzle. Unfortunately, these things do take time but waiting and not knowing seems to be the hardest part. Please try not to make any assumptions as you cannot challenge anything which may not be quite right until you know what you are challenging. Whilst the pneumonia, pancreatitis and glandular fever weren't fun, they were so much better than my expectations. I hope you can find the strength to support each other without being consumed by the anguish. My outcome just shows how diverse the reasons for a lump can be.

If I can be any further help or you just need to chat, please feel free to message. I know I turned to this forum in a time of sheer terror, but I did find comfort here xxx

  • Thank you so much for getting back to me :) I really appreciate it and really needed to hear from someone that has some form of experience with this, it’s hard to explain to anyone that hasn’t been in a similar situation, it feels even worse being for my wee girl, I am just hoping it’s all ok and will defo stay clear of google for a while.

I will post updates and hopefully all is well, thanks again :)

  • You are so very welcome and I hope you do steer clear of Dr Google. The waiting really is difficult I know but try to stay strong and positive because the extra stress will be of no help to you and certainly not to your wee one. Do keep me posted as you will be in my thoughts xx

  • Hi

I found a lump on my left collarbone and had a scan. They found 2 lumps of 1.4 cm and 1.1 cm. Doctor said they are lymph nodes and it's probably swelling  from an infection.

I have an appointment in 2 weeks time at the ENT.

i feel fine, no symptoms except a slight tension on my neck especially when I twist it!

im 56 years old with 3 children.

ive heard that all supra clavicle left enlarged nodules need investigating immediately so am very worried.

  • Hi Susiegirl,

I can understand your worry! I too was very worried and couldn't stop myself from panicking. It felt like a whirlwind at times but also the waiting felt like forever. The fact that they are investigating is a good thing, despite how scary the process is. It was on my mind constantly. Try to remember that there are so many reasons to have enlarged nodes and these investigations are the path to finding out why you have some. I had no idea that I would go on to be so poorly with glandular fever, but finally it became the explanation for mine. There are many others on here with different reasons too. Try to stay positive and open minded, although I know that this can be so very difficult!

I do think that taking care of my children did keep me busy enough to keep my sanity through the process. My partner was extremely supportive throughout and understood that it dominated my thoughts when I wasn't busy being Mum. For me, being busy helped. When I wasn't busy I found great comfort on this forum where I could openly voice my fears and concerns. There are so many people to share these worries with, many of whom have been in the same or a very similar situation. I was pleased that I had people to listen to me and a place where I could just say how I felt when I couldn't sleep. It helped keep me strapped in whilst riding the emotional rollercoaster.

I found the ENT appointment not too bad. Was pleasantly surprised at the process! Hopefully it will be quite straight forward for you too. Have they mentioned any biopsies or more scans to see if the nodes are reducing? I made a point of asking at the end of every appointment what the next step would be and always took a notebook and pen to write anything down. I was very aware that my brain may not process well and writing things down meant I could retrieve accurate information at a later time, rather than relying on my frazzled and stressed self.

I do hope you find what helps you through this difficult process but please know that if chatting here helps, I am always happy to listen!

  • Thank you for your quick reply sharpy20.

what you've mentioned has calmed me down.
im just at the beginning of the investigation. I felt only 1 swollen nodule but the scan revealed another larger one.

i guess having an ct scan will give me more answers and a biopsy.
I feel well but am starting to question the aches and pains I'm having at the moment on my legs and back as I've also started exercising!!

thank you again for your resssurances. I will post my news after my appointment in 2 weeks time.
