Smear test results - borderline changes and HPV infection

Hello

I am 25 and had my first smear test in May. It took over 3 months for my results to come back and the results were borderline abnormal cells and a HPV infection.

I have (wrongly) over Googled this and cannot seem to remain calm or worry about this. I think it’s  the fact of having HPV and not knowing how long, long enough to be cancerous? I know people say it takes years to develop into cancer but I first had sex at 16 but because you never know what if it has been since then.

I feel completely helpless and I know I should just wait for the colposcopy but at this point in time I do not know what to do. My partner has been extremely supportive but I still have so many questions. Can I still have sex with him? What if he has it or had it and passed it to be and never knew, would having unprotected sex pass it back and forth and make it worse?

Any supportive and and helpful replies would be really appreciated, just to ease my mind because it is breaking me.

Thank you

  • keep us all posted hun. ‍♀️ It’s so scary isn’t it, trying to keep positive, it’s hard too though.x

  • Yes my last was 3 years ago after my little one was born, everything was fine then, so bit of shock this time round

  • Hey ladies!

New to the thread - but can relate to a lot!

I'm 30, mine started when I was 19, it was SUPER scary at that time. It all started with investigation for ovarian cysts and has resulted in finding CIN, VIN, VAIN AND!! AIN (anal, yay!). It seems I'm a case of fast recurring changes - they remove it, it comes back (average 1 op a year, some years I've had 3).

It all started as such a scary thing, being told I was an uncommon case and would be dealing with it until they found a way to stop it (unpredictable). I dug myself into a horrible ditch of sadness and worry for the first 3 years, then one day something made me realise - it's not so bad. They have their eye on me, they know what is going on and they are looking after me well. I am LUCKY!!!! If it hadn't been found when I was 19 (I was grade 2) it wouldn't have been found until my first smear 6 years after that, and who knows what could have happened in that time.

Truth of it is, it's not nice, it is worrying at times, you have to talk to people and let out how you feel. Just focus on the fact it is being monitored and you will be fine. Smear tests are so important - I was stupid last year and missed 2 of my appointments (12 months worth of smears) and have been recently, doctor got me in for surgery 2 weeks after my appointment to remove a patch clearly seen on the outside (turned out to be VIN3) and now my smear has come back abnormal. I was offered an immediate colposcopy but turned it down due to having come on on the day. I'll be in in the next 2 weeks to find out what is going on, the key thing is I have learned not to worry about it because I know I will find out what is happening and I know the doctors will look after me.

I will be following your stories and available to chat at any time <3 all the best ladies!

  • hey hun how are you? So had my colposcopy today , he said my smear showed Cin2, when he looked he said it was tiny, could be cin1. He’s took a biopsy so just wait now to see if I need them off or not. Thing us women have t go through. Hope you’re ok.
