Smear test results - borderline changes and HPV infection

Hello

I am 25 and had my first smear test in May. It took over 3 months for my results to come back and the results were borderline abnormal cells and a HPV infection.

I have (wrongly) over Googled this and cannot seem to remain calm or worry about this. I think it’s  the fact of having HPV and not knowing how long, long enough to be cancerous? I know people say it takes years to develop into cancer but I first had sex at 16 but because you never know what if it has been since then.

I feel completely helpless and I know I should just wait for the colposcopy but at this point in time I do not know what to do. My partner has been extremely supportive but I still have so many questions. Can I still have sex with him? What if he has it or had it and passed it to be and never knew, would having unprotected sex pass it back and forth and make it worse?

Any supportive and and helpful replies would be really appreciated, just to ease my mind because it is breaking me.

Thank you

  • Thank you so much Emma. And congratulations!!

I will definitely message back once I've had my test. But I felt I needed to get my worries off my chest. I'm keeping it bottled up. I've told my mom I've got abnormal cells but not the HPV positive bit.

My moms had abnormal cells years ago and had them lasers off. She was fine. But she didn't he the HPV. So I'm worried.

but thank you for messaging me back so fast. Really appreciate it. It's nice talking to someone who has had the same results x

  • Hi,

Im glad I can help. HPV is very common so I wouldn't worry about it.
you should get the result back within 2 weeks, I called my doctors and they told me over the phone.
I have to have my smear done again in November so I'm just going to take it day by day and if I need treatment I will have it done. You just got to think at least you went now rather then didn't go.
yeah let me know how you get on and I'm sure everything will be fine. Even if you need treatment don't worry! My Nan alway said to me don't worry be happy.
and thanks for the congratulations! It's all very exciting.
Anyway take care and your be fine, if you need to talk I'm always here to support anyone.

  • Hello, I had hvp positive result and a normal cell and smear which is good. But I'm worried about the hvp bit! Googled it which wasnt best thing to do as genital warts came up! Is this the same thing as we were tested for

    Thanks

  • Hi Pink

The hpv strain which causes genital warts is not the same as the strains which can cause cervical cell changes. Having hpv is extremely common, but the fact that you have no cell changes is a great result! I would stay off google..it’s not at all helpful when trying to find out medical information.

  • Thank you! Yea googling is the worst thing to do I know, but to be honest I'd never heard of hpv.

    Thanks for your reply x

  • Hi hun, I'm in the same type of situation I'm 25 and had my first smear in June came back I had high hpv but no abnormal cells i have no symptoms or anything I was so scared and worried and confused as I haven't slept with anyone in 2 years.my called my doctors and spoke to the nurse and she said my body with fight the virus and to try stay healthy I asked her if it will affect my fertility as I have no children yet but I do want to start trying next year after me and my boyfriend get married, but me being me I googled it and just made things worse I booked an appointment at a private hospital I went last Wednesday honestly I was shocked at how little time he spent to talk to me I had a lot of questions I wanted to ask but he went on to how talk about the year he started doing smear tests he was also running late he basically told me what the doctors told me come back in 12 months and be retested If the results are  the same I'll have an colposcopy to see further and I tryed to ask a few questions but I get as he was trying to rush me out the door so I only got to ask a couple of questions I was in there less than 10 mins, I wanted to see if anyone knows if it does affect your fertility and if they can recommend anything to try and boost my immune system to help my body fight the virus I have read that bioglan biotic balance has help I had a b12 jab last week also and I am trying to lose weight and get healthy and eat more healthy so hopefully next year it will have cleared x

  • Hey!

Just thought I would let you know. I kept calling the hospital chasing my appointment. They had a cancellation! I had my colposcopy and they had to take a biopsy. Not going to lie, it hurt so much! I asked them if it was cancer, to which they replied "no, you had your last smear 3 years ago and it was clear. it can take up to 10-15 years for anything to turn into cervical cancer". I then burst into tears of relief. Let's be honest, we all know why we have a smear, to rule out cervical cancer. Then to have abnormal cells, you think the worst!

Anyway, 2 weeks after my biopsy, I had the letter with my results...... my biopsy did not show any abnormalities and I go back every 3 years as normal. Phew ! Thank goodness.

Again, I would like to thank you for your kind words of reassurance.

    Keep smiling :) xxx

  • Hi Avarni do you still have Hpv even though e everything else is clear

  • Hello!

I got my results back in august, I had my colposcopy like 2 weeks ago. I have mid changes, the biopsy will say more after 2 more weeks, but I'm not worried.

What I'm worried about I have white discharge inside my vagina and I don't know what is that. My local gp took a sample and they said I don't have any infection or yeast. Sometimes before the pee I feel... I'm not saying pain but it's feels like a little uncomfortable. When you feel something is not okay.

Can it be because of the hpv?

When it's started I had the same symptoms (I'm having it from july), still the test says nothing.

    I'm really worried.

    Thanks for the help!

  • Hi

I was the same as you with my results, I had all the test done and was worried too about becoming pregnant. I was told it will not effect my chances.
I was due a review January 2020..... but I didn't have it as I found out I was pregnant! I had my little boy and just had my smear to double check for HPV and abnormal cells and I got my results last week and I'm all clear!!!
HPV does clear up by itself! Don't worry about anything. Try not to google as this doesn't help. Take each day as it comes and just remember at least you got checked in the first place and they found it straight away!

    take care your be fine!
