Referred for CT scan might have Ovarian Cancer

Hello all, I've signed up as I'm going out of my mind with worry and I don't know where else to turn.  I had a pelvic MRI last week to see if my fibroids were suitable for Embolisation.  The day after, I got a call saying the gynaecologist wanted to see me the following day.

When I arrived, there was the gynaecologist and also a nurse who I think was a 'Gynaecology Oncologist Nurse' or something like that.  The gynaecologist told me the MRI showed a cyst on my right ovary that they think is on my ovary but it might be on my appendix.  He said it was 7cm and from his description I think it's a complex one.

He said I need a CA125 blood test and he's ordered an urgent CT scan of my pelvis, abdomen and chest.  I asked if it is cancer; they just kept saying they don't know.  I'm trying to stay calm but freaking out about what the blood test and CT Scan will show.

Can anyone who understands the process, please reassure or explain to me:

- Is it normal to have a cancer nurse at the consultation if they aren't yet sure it is cancer?

- is it normal to be referred for a full body CT scan if they aren't yet sure it is cancer?

I had an ultrasound (pelvic and abdominal) last November to confirm fibroids; at the time my ovary was 2.2cm.  I also had a CA125 blood test last July/August (can't remember exactly when) and it was normal at the time.  They're saying this is a new finding that wasn't there before.  The nurse referred to it as an 'incidental finding' or something like that.

  • Can't anyone help?  I'm going out of my mind with worry here..

  • Hello TeslaMoose,

I noticed you hadn't yet received a response so thought I'd come and say hello. I am sorry to hear you are so worried at the moment. Do you know when you will have the CT scan? I hope everything goes well for you. The wait for answers must be incredibly stressful for you.

Perhaps you could give our cancer nurses a ring tomorrow morning and ask them your questions? They may have some insights into your situation. You can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they are very friendly. They also have an Ask the Nurses topic area on this forum.

I hope you will also hear from some of our members soon who have had similar tests before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

We'll be thinking of you in the coming days and keeping everything crossed for you.

    Best wishes,

  • I was wondering how your appointments went? I am currently in the middle of sonething very similar and my brain  is making up every eventuality xx

  • Hi,

i understand youre very worried ive had a similar experience myself.

the doctors found a cyst on my right ovary back in november. they didnt think much of it and did the usual CA125 tests etc, and schedueled me back in march for another ultrasound to check the size as it was causing me so much pain.

about 2 weeks before i was supposed to go in i got a call from the gynacologists assistant who advised another consultant had looked over my results and wanted me to come the next day for a CT scan and also some more blood tests.

Two weeks later i went back and was sat down with my consultant who told me they thought it was a complex cyst and then told me i needed the cyst and my full right ovary and fallopian tube removed, he then took me in another room to meet my gynae oncologist who was lovely and i was also appointed a macmillan nurse.

i was told they suspected my cyst was actually a germ cell tumour and that i had raised tumour marker levels such as my LDH levels etc...

on the 3rd of april i had the procedure and they took bi opsies from the other ovary, my abdomen and also washed my pelvis of some cells to test those also. I get my results back monday to see if im all clear now.

im 20 years old and it is a very worrying and scary process to be in, having a good support network around you and talking on here will help you alot!

hope everything comes back okay for you xxx
