Ovarian Dermoid Cyst and possible Cancer

Hi, I am new to the forum and chat. Im just looking for general advice or anyone that may have expearianced the same. I am very worried and scared.

Yesturday I had keyhole surgery to remove what they thought was just a normal 6cm cyst on my right ovary. It ended up being more like 11cm and a dermoid cyst. They had to to a c section type cut to remove and they also ended up removing my ovary and fallopian tube. This was a precaution as the cyst did not look normal. It has now been sent off to be looked at and I have an agonising 2-3 wks wait for results.

I suppose im wondering if anyone else has had expeariance of this and if a Cancer diagnosis is probable?

I am 36 and have two children, 15years and 10 months. The cyst was first picked up about 6 years ago but had since grown.

  • Thank you for your reply,  I've found it so hard to seek out what's 'normal' after this surgery most ovarian cyst sites the common surgery seems to have been keyhole and then any laparotomy advice goes out to women who's had babies and its been so difficult to find what I can expect from my body.

They found a lot of thyroid in one of my dermoid and neurological tissue so just a whole weird situation going on there.

Future fertility is a big concern for me and going through this has made me realise I want kids, so glad you've got your little boy! Thank you for your kindness

  • Hi everyone,

I can't figure out how to create my own post on this forum without replying to someone.. sorry!
In April I had a 2.5cm dermoid diagnosed. In 3 months it's grown 15mm. The usual growth rate is 18mm/year so naturally I'm very worried. Has anyone had this before and what was the outcome?

    Thanks

  • Hi Laumarpor,

I'm sorry you haven't been able to create your own discussion just yet but I hope our handy guide will help.

  • Hi Bronya22,

I was in excatley the same boat as you back in 2020 . Routine check as such ,well 2.5 yrs waiting for it . See consultant tell her issues I was having previously . Get a ultra sound ,scan etc ,weeks later maybe months back to see consultant . Turns out I have a 5 inch cyst ,1 says byopsy the other says wait 3 months we will see . Meanwhile don't worry ,and blood tests .

3 months later ultra vaginal scan and scan .5incher is gone but there was 3 behind it . More blood test ,no cancer ,wait another 3 months another scan . Dermoid cyst 3 of them fairly large ,but no cancer detected in blood tests . So they said I was good to go . They would see me in 6 months time ..Then covid ..

Seen no one ,couldn't get an appointment . Was given a virtual call ,which they cancelled . Then a call 8 months later to see if I was having any issues ,if I was to contact my GP .

2022 Jan called for appointment , secretary" your no longer a patient ,unless you want to go private ,you'll have to go back on waiting list.."

Made a complaint got a letter for consultantion appointment on the 16/6/2022.

Just over 2 years after 1st been told I had dermoid cysts.

Lesson learned DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CONSULANTANCE OFFICE WITH A FULL EXPLANATION OF DIAGNOSIS, ASK FOR A COPY OF THEIR FINDINGS,AS WELL AS A COPY OF PERPOSED TREATMENT,TIME FRAME ON TREATMENT ,AND FOLLOW UP.

Wish I had ,but I am fine and healthy at least as far as I know and you will be too .

  • How are you? Did you ever get your results back? I'm going through the same at the moment

  • Hi,

With you cysts did you have any other symptoms?

I have a dermoid cyst on each ovary, and haven't had any issues with them but this month iv got a lot of left ovary pain and link discharge, not sure if this is related to the cyst xx

  • Hey Raach,

I noticed you were hoping to hear back from JoJo2.

They haven't been on the forum in a while so there's a chance you may not get a reply.

  • Hi Raach

I too have a dermoid cyst on each ovary. Approx 6cm & 4cm. Unsure which side has which size but im presuming the largest is on the left as i have zero right sided symptoms and lots of left sided symptoms ranging from pain that is obviously on the ovary but some months can go into my flank or down my leg and into left lower back and some months i can have no left sided pain at all. My gynae told me the bowel can flip them over which could explain the pains that come and go.
i did have pinkish discharge after this period and over a year a go had an episode of pink discharge. The discharge i dont attribute to the Dermoids, moreso hormones but my gynae did also say the Dermoids could be releasing their own hormones or playing havoc with mine which could cause the discharge

  • Hi, not sure if you are still on here. My daughter is 16 and has a 8cm dermoid cyst, probably bigger now as diagnosed a year ago. We are on the waiting list... 48 weeks this was from November.

We won't know if her ovary or fallopian tube will need to be removed until the surgeon is doing the op.  But have been told this is a possibility.

She is in pain all the time, had a Aand E visit too.

I'm just seeing how your daughter is.  It's a big worry isn't it leading up to it. Especially when they said its unlikely but can't rule out that it's not benign, though this is highly unlikely.

    Take care

    Emma

    I'm just seeing how yo

  • Hi Emma and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I just wanted to let you know that mygorgeousgirl hasn't been back on the forum since making that post in 2019 so you may not get to find out how her daughter is now.

I'll have my fingers crossed they will return to update you, but if you don't receive a reply from them or anyone else on this discussion, you're welcome to try reaching out to others on more recent discussions you find about this topic or you can start your own.

If you or your daughter would like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to answer any questions you may have and put your mind at ease.

We're thinking of you Emma and will have our fingers crossed your daughter won't have to wait too much longer for her op.

    Kind regards,
