Ovarian Dermoid Cyst and possible Cancer

Hi, I am new to the forum and chat. Im just looking for general advice or anyone that may have expearianced the same. I am very worried and scared.

Yesturday I had keyhole surgery to remove what they thought was just a normal 6cm cyst on my right ovary. It ended up being more like 11cm and a dermoid cyst. They had to to a c section type cut to remove and they also ended up removing my ovary and fallopian tube. This was a precaution as the cyst did not look normal. It has now been sent off to be looked at and I have an agonising 2-3 wks wait for results.

I suppose im wondering if anyone else has had expeariance of this and if a Cancer diagnosis is probable?

I am 36 and have two children, 15years and 10 months. The cyst was first picked up about 6 years ago but had since grown.

  • I’m sorry to hear about your issues with delays. I’ve made an account especially to comment on here as it may be of some use to some people, plus I may a question or two as well. I’m 21, was diagnosed with a 10cm cyst back in April 2019. Unfortunately due to circumstances (moving away) I had to re-register with another GP to get a referral. I had another scan in the summer, by this time they said it was 11cm. I saw the consultant gynaecologist in September, who then told me it was 13cm. I had the operation just over two weeks ago now. It turned out the cyst was actually 20cm, plus the other ovary had a cyst which was 7-8cm, plus there were some “seedling” ones as well. They moved from keyhole to open surgery. They were all removed, the ovaries reconstructed but otherwise both preserved. I have just gone back to work today, and am feeling fairly good considering. In terms of dealing with the pain, i’d let your employers know if you haven’t already. You have a diagnosis, get a note from the doctor if you must. I told mine and they were very understanding (however I work in an office and this is very different from flying). When I was dealing with pain, I took ibuprofen, laid down quietly with a hot water bottle on my stomach, listened to music or relaxation videos and the like. Much of my pain probably came from constipation so I made sure I ate well (to keep the bowels moving!) plus they prescribed me medication to help with the constipation which eased the pain. Plus plenty of water. I know it’s not much but it’s what I did. Currently, my period is very, very late. I have not had it yet which is concerning. I am not on contraception (nor have I ever been) and have had a period every single month since the time I was 13. Had anyone else experienced this? Plus the constipation is still there. I hope this helps someone. Good luck all.
  • Hi,

Reading your post I thought it might help to know that after my open surgery to remove my dermoid cyst, I didn't have a period for 2.5 months. Its been 8 months now and they're still a bit irregular but I think they're starting to become more regular. However if you are particularly worried I would go see your doctor about this.

    Best Wishes

  • Hi,

I know how worrying it can be waiting for results of the scans and not being told anything, so I understand it is easier said than done when I say to try your best not to worry. As far as I'm aware unfortunately a lot of the time those taking the scans aren't supposed to discuss what they see as they are supposed to wait for a doctor to look at them and then discuss with the patient. I hope you didn't have too long a wait until your doctors appointment.

  • Hey hun. Im from york too.  Im just waiting for an 11cm x 9cm by 8cm cyst to be removed that's grown in the last year on my left ovary but because of my weight I've been waiting for ages for surgery. Did you get sorted and who is your consultant? I am constantly getting infection and urinating blood. However thats not the biggest problem. The pain im having is incredible. My lower back hurts but the deep pelvic pain that comes and goes in to my hip/ bum and down my leg is unbareable. It comes and goes but it's there most days sometimes hits me a few times a day. I take all sorts a pain relief including zomorphine/oramorph but sometimes that doesn't even touch it. I also have a 6cm on my right but that doesnt seem to cause problems. Everytime I have a blood tests my markers are high and I always show infection (The docs keep putting it down to utis/endometriosis) They say the CT shows the cyst is free fludid with a little solid too, however until they operate (which was supposed to be March) they cant tell a 100percent if it's benign. All they have said is that they definitely have to take my left tube and ovary. Could I possibly ask if anyone is reading this gets constant brown and/or cleary watery discharge and incredible pain and if so was you diagnosed with just a large ovatian cyst or a cyst that has turned malignant? Ive just come off 2 lots of antibiotics that cover BV and UTI's but still got the pain and discharge and have had it for months plus the bloating and pressure with my water works and it's only getting worse. Ive got the mirena and had it since Oct last year. Thats when the cyst seems to have started to rapidly grow and I know that cysts can cause pain and so can endo etc but surely not to this extent. I've started with sickness and breathing problems now that's been constant for a few months and my appetite isn't the same. I can eat but never feel hungry and when I do I only feel horrible after. Im always bloated.. My problem is I'm litterally bed bound at the mo and think I need to be in hospital again but with what's going on it is the last place I want to be unless they are going to operate. Any input would be great. Kind regards. Hayley

  • Did you get your tests and results hun?

  • Hi

I have just read your post as I have been and still am in similar sitation to you. I had a dermoid cysyt removed from right ovary two years ago and had and still do have the same pain as you describe, stabbing and an ache. I asked the surgeon what it was and he said probably scar tissue! The past two weeks it has eased off a bit but I also have another dermoid cyst on my left ovary which needs removing so I am very concerned about the after pain. Did you ever find out what was causing yours?

    Regards

  • Hi

I am in a similar position to you and have already had one dermoid cyst removed along with a healthy ovary and fallopian tube. I also have another deremoid cysyt on my remaining ovary which needs to be removed too but I know the surgeon wants to remove my ovary as well, which I really do not want to happen as it will put me into surgical menoupause. I am 51 but still have regular periods so I am very relluctant to let go of it! What happened to you in the end, did you go ahead with surgery and did you have both ovaries removed?

    Regards

  • Hi,

I had one ovary removed in the end, however they tried keyhole surgery but they couldn't deflate it as it was very large 22cm and ended up with a full laparotomy.

I was 50 then and fit and healthy so I request to keep my other ovary, however about 6-7 month later I felt like I was going mad, depressed, anxious , aches and pains. It was only after discussion with ladies at work that I even considered I may be entering peri/menopause.

I hadn't considered this and have had Implanon implants for contraception for the last 21 years so no periods to notice any change.

I saw a consultant privately in February 2020, who thought that operation in 2019 had probably kicked of menopausal symptoms, one old ovary obviously want doing the job of two :-) and I started on oestrogel. It's taken a while but after about 3 months  I started to feel like I'm back to my old self.

I also added some vitamin D iral spray and magnesium trans dermal spray which has really helped

  • I was in excruciating pain one day, I was sick 5 times, couldn't walk. I've never felt anything like it, A&E were less than helpful, I didn't even have my stomach touched, had tests and given some morphine and sent home. The next day my gp sent me back to surgical admissions to after feeling my stomach.

What followed was ultrasounds and an mri and many blood tests and all the markers were coming back too high. No one knew what we were dealing with. I was unsure going in if I'd have both cysts removed, one, lose ovaries. I'm 27 with no children and it just felt like suddenly you're in this position where your future could all change in a moment. I had a laparotomy and they took out 2 dermoid cysts and fluid. Saved both ovaries, 12 cm and 8cm cysts.

Unfortunately they were unsure of what they found. And I had 3 months of no answers, they belived one cyst was a struma ovarii and I got passed onto another 2 hospitals as they had concerns of carcinoma. They were concerned one cyst had either grown thyroid cancer.. Or I had thyroid cancer and it had travelled and unfortunately this is quite rare and no one seemed willing to make that call. As you can imagine living In pain after laparotomy and having this hanging over your head during the pandemic did a number on my mental health. Thankfully in January a wonderful doctor from Oxford rang me up who is too of his field to tell me it was not cancer. And I just broke down. The waiting for the results have just taken such a toll on me and my family. But so thankful everything had worked out, healing well, these things take so much time and patience with yourself.

Does anyone still have total numbness around the scar and pain when wearing tights or jeans that sit on the scar? I'm coming up 5 months post op? Will this ever be normal?.

Also my bowel habbits have just never been the same since the surgery, with me urgently needing to go when I wake up and again midway through the afternoon... This is unusual for me and I wonder is this typical?

  • Oh dear you sound like you have been through it. Good news on the all clear. Dermoids are generally OK, though they have the ability to be all sorts of tissues! Mine was mainly bone and  hair with glandular like tissue, they are grotesque to look at!

Numbness is perfectly normal at incision site, I'm not sure if it come back after a few years or you just don't notice it any more, it does not have that 'odd' feeling after the first year post surgery. I got pregnant nearly 8 years on from my surgery, with less than half my ovary tissue, at 41...ended in an emergency section but it was the same doctor! She cut exactly the same place as my dermoid surgery and the c section was much easier recovery and no extra numbness which makes me think that I'm just used to it.

Hopefully this puts your mind at rest a little. Though my surgeon at the time did say if I wanted children to maybe think sooner rather than later due to less ovary tissue ( I was never bothered but my little boy is the best!) I joked when I saw her in surgery for my section that it was her fault
