Ovarian Dermoid Cyst and possible Cancer

Hi, I am new to the forum and chat. Im just looking for general advice or anyone that may have expearianced the same. I am very worried and scared.

Yesturday I had keyhole surgery to remove what they thought was just a normal 6cm cyst on my right ovary. It ended up being more like 11cm and a dermoid cyst. They had to to a c section type cut to remove and they also ended up removing my ovary and fallopian tube. This was a precaution as the cyst did not look normal. It has now been sent off to be looked at and I have an agonising 2-3 wks wait for results.

I suppose im wondering if anyone else has had expeariance of this and if a Cancer diagnosis is probable?

I am 36 and have two children, 15years and 10 months. The cyst was first picked up about 6 years ago but had since grown.

  • My beautiful 16 year old daughter only this week had a 8 inch DS removed.  Hard to detect other than recent excruciating pain.  We thought it had something to do with her periods!  Sadly she has had her left falopian tube and ovary removed.  The cyst was twisting her organs hence the pain.  The surgeon (who was amazing).  Operated in an attempt to preserve Hannah's ovary, but too late, the tube and ovary were dead - the CD had more or less strangled the life out of them.  A BIG MESSAGE TO ALL YOU MUMS - IRREGULAR PERIOD PAIN - MAKE A FUSS WITH YOUR GP

  • Hiya, I went to a&e a few months ago crying with sudden right sided groin pain that had lasted all day, it was worse than child birth. My blood results came back normal but was on morphine for the pain so the doctor wasn't convinced as that didn't even take my pain away. I was put in for an MRI scan and was revealed to me that they had found a mass in my pelvic area which they said looked like a dermoid. I was referred by my gp to a private hospital which I had an ultrasound done the end of November. Due to them not having the MRI image sent to them they couldn't find the dermoid cyst but had found 2 normal cysts on my right ovary and couldn't see my left ovary at all. They have since for the MRI scan and saw where the dermoid is so my next ultrasound scan is on 7th Feb. When I had my follow up appointment it was revealed that it's in an awkward place imbedded into my pelvis which explains why I have pain down my leg when I'm walking and leaning over. I also have painful periods when I have them as they are irregular but they always have been and lower back pain. I feel that since my last ultrasound that it's gotten bigger we I can feel it moving when I walk with some pain and makes me feel sick. I don't even know what they are going to do with me yet until I have my next ultrasound. I wish all of you the best, you can't help but worry as I feel the same as I have 2 children to look after

  • Hi , I was diagnosed nov 2017 with an 8cm by 7 cm by 18cm dermoid cyst on my right ovary have been checked bloods etc it is benign ,I do look pregnant but as I’m overweight anyway I can’t just blame the cyst ,I’m not in pain more like slight discomfort , I was told I needed to lose 20 % of body weight before they would operate I live in York , as I have reached this weight I’m to see the consultant in March but I’m seriously thinking about leaving it alone as it’s a major op full hysterectomy 6 weeks off work I’m a hairdresser , my mum passed at 58 of ovarian cancer I’m 53 , I’m frightened of disturbing things in there .

  • hi. I had a 7lb dermoid cyst removed from my left ovary when I was 14, I’m now 41 and I am waiting to have a 9cm dermoid cyst removed from my right ovary. Luckily my tumour markers have come back normal, such a relief! Sorry to  hear your 16 yr old ended up losing the ovary and tube, but don’t think this will affect her chances of successfully having a family later in life. A year after my 1st cyst was removed, we discovered my older sister had one as well, only hers had died, killing off the ovary and tube, so it was all removed with the cyst. She has 2 boys now, one is 12 and the other 9, conceived with only 1 ovary. Dermoid cysts are a complete pain (literally!!) but luckily a low percentage of dermoid result in cancer, and most of the time doesn’t affect you having kids. I didn’t for one second think I had another 28 years after the first, the pain has been excruciating in short bursts with a constant dull ache, but I am glad I am on route to get it removed and move on. Wishing you all the best with your procedures if you are waiting on them, I hope you get sorted soon.

  • After months of weight gain, bloating, back pain and occasional pelvic pain. I though I felt a hard mass (my unicorn baby) in my pelvis. Although oddly I had noticed my mons pubis looked bigger , fleshier (anyone else have this symptom) I  accepted this as part of my menopause  along with the ever expanding waistline. I then stupidly stayed up most nights for a week googling my symptoms and making myself sick with anixiety. I eventually diagnosed myself with a prolapse which does have similar symptoms as an ovarian cyst. As I had already had my womb and ovary removed 15 years ago a vault prolapse it had to be!

On visit to my GP I explained my symptoms and what i thought. I had to talk her into doing an internal and finally I left with a prescription for laxatives to clear what she thought was severe constipation - which also can have the same symptoms!

A week later I was back with a very very empty bowl but still a pelvic mass. Luckily I have BUPA so made a referral for an ultrasound.

I attended an ultrasound on Monday (my 56th birthday) They found a 12cm + 2.6cm cyst on my left ovary

a 1.6cm cyst on my right . I left feeling relieved it was

something that could be sorted easily.

A call from my doctor the next day to ask me to pop in felt a bit weird and unusual.

He said because of the structure of the large cyst they would like me to have a ca125 blood test.

Another night on google ( single mum with no one to tell me I’m being stupid ) and I’m now a Dr specialising  in ovarian cancer, I have planned my funeral, thought of what I needed to put in place for my family.  I have slept 0 hours been to the toilet with a bad stomach hourly.

The wait until 10.30 when the reports are back was the longest ever ! Then to be told my doctor was not in until after lunch I asked that they called back and would be happy for the cleaner to tell me!!!

They did 30minutes later telling me that my bloods were 11 and within the normal range (under 35)  really ?

my personal party lasted until that evening when Dr google told me early cancer do not always show up on bloods and a biopsy is the only 100% way of telling.

I have my gynaecology appointment on Wednesday and hopefully the removal very soon. I will be asking that they take both ovaries giving me one less thing to worry about!

Put those phones down ladies, ignore Dr Google & hug your family.

Good luck to you all ️ Xxx

  • hi I am new to this forum and reading through a lot of posts about ovarian cysts I was diagnosed with a 4.4cm cyst on my left ovary 14 months ago. It was found unexpectedly ..I am 52 years old and post menopause as I started menopause at 38 I had blood tests to check my marker levels and they were all normal on a follow up appointment I was given the option of getting it removed or letting it where it was. My specialist said it could have been there for many year without me knowing they were not worried but left me decide to get it out or leave it.. It might have never affected me but there was a chance it could turn into something it shouldn't be or it could burst which was quite dangerous.. I decided to get it removed.. Option given to me on morning of surgery which was 06/03/ 2019  was to have my ovary and Fallopian removed also because it had the same blood supply also given the option to take the other ovary and Fallopian tube also because my chances of getting cyst on my right ovary was very high.. So I went for both ovary and Fallopian tube removal a week ago today. I had keyhole surgery and when they went in it was not a cyst it was a tumour a solid hard mass they told me which took them a lot longer to remove and had to have two incisions on left side one through belly button and one through right side.. After surgery surgeon came and told me what had happened and that tumour was sent off. She said she was not worried because from what she could tell it was benign.. Needless to say I am a nervous wreck and don't know why my results are back I received a follow up appointment in the hospital for 13/5/2019 my family are reassuring Me that I would have heard by now if it was something to worry about. .I have had a tough week with very bad burning stinging pain on my left side absolutely No pain on right or centre of belly button but yesterday and today have been pain free I am back to my own doctor in the morning to check my incisions where I hope to have a chat with her and hope she can enlighten Me and maybe find out any results if possible.. I think if you have a cyst get it removed my sister in law had a hysterecomy and she was amazing after it I had more pain than her. I think prevention is better after all we don't know anything till it is out I hope to god my results are benign as its the longest and most worrying time of my life hugs to all who are waiting for results

  • Hello,

I have read all your posts and suffering similarity.

in August 2018 I was found to have a dermoid cyst on right ovary around 6cm big

i was not suffering pain at all and it was found because I was having a scan due to something unrelated

I had the dermoid removed 30 August 2018

Since then and still now I am suffering constant pain in the area where my right ovary is. The pain is always there, a dull ache most of the time and sometimes is short, stabbing pains. It is worse some days than others . It also seems to get worse with movement.

I am due an MRI on Thursday. I saw my treating surgeon today which turned out to be a mistake by the NHS- they should have booked me in after. Now I have to wait until the end of April for results of MRI due to her being out of the country.

i have been waiting for an answer for months as to why I am in so much pain still. I am now really upset that I am going to have to wait even longer.

If anyone else has experienced this since removal of their cyst I would love to hear your story.

  • Hi,

I am new to the chat and just created an account so I could comment.

I have read all your posts and I’m so glad this thread was started! I have never talked about my experiences so hoping you won’t mind me sharing on here. I apologise in advance - it’s a long one and if you read it all I’ll be very grateful.

I had a Laparoscopy when I was 17 weeks pregnant to remove a large dermoid cyst from my left ovary. Because I was pregnant, they had to make the incision vertically  to allow for stretch as I continued to grow (my scar is horrible as it stretched during pregnancy). I had no symptoms; the cyst was found during an examination after a heavy bleed. I was kept in hospital overnight and had 2 scans booked for the following day - 1 to check baby... 1 to find out what the lump was. It was all very scary at the time. I was shocked they wanted to operate while I was pregnant but they said it was too dangerous not to as it could have ruptured or twisted during pregnancy or giving birth. I was also suffering from hyperemisis so had to wait for the sickness to subside before they could operate (nightmare pregnancy).

Thank you if you’re still reading...

Anyway, everything healed fine and thank goodness, I went on to have a healthy, beautiful baby... it was a long time ago and I was young. I remember them coming back and telling me there was nothing ‘sinister’ about the cyst but that it was full of all sorts of gross things like teeth and hair ... I actually felt a bit stupid because I hadn’t even thought it could be anything other than a cyst! Anyway, I went on to have 3 more healthy babies with no problems.

A few years ago, I was having pain on my left side... it went on quite a while before I got it checked and it turned out to be another dermoid cyst on the same ovary. I had it removed, this time with a laparoscopy and she took the ovary away.

For the last 2 weeks, I have been in constant pain on my right side... I’m sure it’s the same sort of pain but I don’t really know how to describe it.

I’m now working myself up to go and get checked and so much more worried than before that it’s become something ‘sinister’. I’m also overdue for my smear test and feeling stressed about it all.

Again, sorry for the long post - it’s good to get it off my chest.

  • hello everyone, I am new to this thread as I was redirected in the hope of some comfort.

Im 25 and I have been bleeding constantly with the occasional few days break when I’m lucky since November so 4, almost 5 months. Also been suffering with pelvic pain, lower back pain and upper thigh on my right side but not too badly as it was just a dull pain, almost like a slight ache on my right side.. So when it turned out I had a cyst on my right ovary it all seemed to make sense.

I was diagnosed in January and was then transfererd  to referral to a gynaecologist for an urgent scan. They say urgent but with a 3 month gap inbetween both scans. However I sadly got some bad post to say this was cancelled and he now been much pack till June making it a 5 month gap!!

Since then the pelvic pain has been getting worse. It’s constantly there as it was before however I seem to be getting these sudden sharp pains more frequently as time goes on.

I fly for a living, and I’m terribly worried something will happen on a flight, or when I’m on a layover abroad.. especially after reading some stories where the cyst has burst or has caused the ovary & tube to twist.

Im wondering if any of you lovely ladies have some advise or recommendations to help me? I have been very run down and have been advised to speak to someone due to the depression from it all as it’s been affecting my life in a negative way however my GP reckons the depression could be caused from the constant period.

If anyone knows how to possibly speed things up with the NHS or know any tips to just help bare the day to day life until it finally gets sorted.  will be greatly appreciated.

However.. I thank you all for sharing your stories and problems and if anything giving me comfort to know I am not the only one as sometimes it can be easy to forget.

I wish you all the best with your surgeries, results and check ups xxx

  • In January I visited my GP for something completely unrelated and they felt a mass in my abdomen.

Initially I was referred fasttrack to colo-rectal dept.  I had a CT scan where it was found that I had a mass on my right ovary.  This is 22x19x9cm. I had no symptoms whatsoever.  Now I know it is there I can feel it if I press on my abdomen.

It is on my right ovary and although it is not thought to be cancerous,  further ultrasound suggests it may be dermoid or endometriotic, they have suggested removal.

I am so scared to have a major operation and to have to stay in hospital. They have talked about removing both ovaries putting me into surgical menopause.  Although I am 50 I have no signs of meno[pause yet and with a family history of osteoporosis and heart disease I don't understand why they want to remove a healthy ovary.

Waiting for follow up now with gynae consultant, following their internal conbined meeting to discuss management, but am wondering if I can just leave it alone.  If it can't be removed in day care via keyhole then I'd rather it just be left.

Waiting is the worst time !
