Blood in stool - 20 and scared

Hi, so last easter (2017) was when i first noticed some bright red blood on the toilet paper. This happened each time i went to the loo over the next 10 days or so. Although i only went about 4 times as i was that nervous about seeing more blood. Also, my entire life up until the last couple of months, I would usually only pass a stool about every other day, obviously sometimes it was consecutive days and other times it was longer than 2 days but I’m guessing that I would generally go every other day, so I didn’t think much of it, although it could have been slight constipation. However i also had another symptom. Just before I started passing blood with the stools, my gut started making gurgling nosies, and there was a lot of flatulence (gas). I could tell the noises weren’t from my stomach and it wasn’t hunger. When the noises and flatulance stopped after about 10 days, so did the bleeding (from what i could see anyway).

Skip forward to a few days ago and there was blood on the toilet paper once again, but only the once this time (i think) and i am passing gas frequently with a gurgling abdomen. This time, i am also experiencing some pain in the abdomen area (around where i think the colon is). The pain seems like it could just be trapped gas but i am not sure. Also, there have been two occasions over the last week where i think i have shown signs that I might faint (cold sweat, lightheaded) but haven’t. I’m not sure if this is connected, because the weather is extremely hot at the moment and it might just be dehydration, or it could be that both times, i was worrying quite a lot about my symptoms and it could have just been me worrying myself sick with stress. Also, if its IBD it could be to do with anemia.

The first time I didn’t go to see a doctor as I thought with the gurgling abdomen it might have just been some kind of bug. But i told myself that if the symptoms come back I would go to a doctor.

Looking online, my symptoms would suggest colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, but after looking into IBD more, and reading other people’s experience with it, it seems less likely to be that. Others have said they would need to rush to the toilet 10 times a day and that their flare ups would last for months. This hasn’t been the case for me. That’s why i think it might be cancer.

Im scared that after doing nothing about it for 16 months, if it is cancer, I might have missed the opportunity to catch it early. I also have no idea how to tell my parents and this is another reason why I’m scared of going to the doctors as I wouldn’t  want to burden them with this. I would also have to justify why i left it so long and I don’t know if i can. Another thing I’m worried about is that if it is cancer, and it’s at a survivable stage, will chemotherapy stop me from having children one day. Im 20, so when I realised it might be cancer, one of the first things that came to mind is that I might not live to be able to have kids, which really got to me, but now I’ve found out that chemotherapy can also make you infertile.

Any help would be massively appreciated, especially in relation to telling my parents about my symptoms, or whether I should wait and first go to the doctor alone, and then tell them if there is cause for concern. Thanks.

  • Hi,

I got confirmation it wasn't cancer after a few tests, my symptoms are as a result of some cysts and masses that are bleeding within my intestines which I'm awaiting surgery on to remove them.

hopefully should fix everything that's happening

    thanks for asking, appreciate it

  • Hiya

Try not to worry too much. I know its easier said than done but i had a lot of the same symptoms mentioned in this thread and mine turned out as severe ibs boarderline ibd. Had bloods, colonoscopy, fecal sample testing, upper endoscopy and a video capsule endoscopy aswell!! The colonoscopy isnt too bad, the stuff they make you drink tastes gross but its drinkable, the test i would recomend the sedation as they give you pain relief aswell which makes things a lot easier, its more unvomfortable than anything espically when they are going around bends but its doable xx

If you have any questions just ask x

  • Hi for those who are reading looking for similar assurances. One day I had bright red blood in my stool and went to the doctor who did a physical exam (finger in the butt) said things felt good. Bleeding stopped after about a week. Around my mid 20s I was having a lot of gas and boughts of diarrhea sometimes. I had normal poop sometimes with blood, I also had diarrhea sometimes with blood. Went in for a colonoscopy (Drinking the laxative was the most disgusting thing I've ever done) The doctor looked around, said my colon looks great and healthy, sent tissue samples to the lab they were normal (no cancer, no Crohns, etc) and thus I was diagnosed with IBS (by process of elimination basically) and then I realized my bloating, gas and problems were all centered around my diet, only happened when I ate trigger foods like coffee, cauliflower, etc. (Also happens during period). Because of this alternating normal/diarrhea episodes it turns out I was getting several anal fissures. There's an inner sphincter that spasms and struggles to relax in IBS people making it easy to get fissures.(there is a surgery for it but I prob wont get it since it's not that painful) My fissure symptoms sound exactly like yours, some bleeding for a week and then gone but if you suddenly pass another hard poop to fast soon after it will reopen that fissure before it finishes healing. It happens very often. I'm just letting you guys know one (and probably the most common) cause for these symptoms as a fellow young person. My doctor said intestinal problems/diseases begin showing up in mid-late 20s. I recommend getting colonoscopy for peace of mind, but don't be overly concerned it is not likely to be cancer. I have had this kind of fissures/bleeding for 2-3 years now and I'm still the same health wise (no cancer). Start with chicken and rice diet and add one food at a time and see if it triggers your symptoms of gas and bloating, eliminating these foods completely cured me and I now don't have problems unless I eat my trigger foods. (unfortunately period poops still can't be avoided)

Oh as for the fainting/light headedness it may be a whole different issue but I also get that sometimes. I read that some people have dizzy spells if blood is rushing to the intestines to digest food so I often have small dizzy spells around the same time I feel bloating/gas/gurgling. The feeling passes once I pass the gas. My stomach gurgles all the time. IBS has different levels, some just get gas, some get constipation, diarrhea or alternating constipation/diarrhea. I would guess you have nothing to worry about but get checked out just in case

  • Hi Renea .. I've had bleeding ( bright red) for probably 4 months now. Initially went to doc or did blood test and stool sample . All clear . I've told myself must be an internal pile. But no matter what I do . It still bleeds with BM..  abd blood is def on stool and not in. Just can I ask I wonder fissure but.. I never get pain with BM so ruled that out.. did u?

  • When the fissure is near/on the rim (majority of them)  it has a distinct stinging pain (very noticeable) and also visible with a mirror and flashlight, but I’ve also had a few fissures happen on the inside, when that was the case I felt no pain just a worrying amount of blood in the toilet. However with sitz baths and eating carefully these fissures stop bleeding after 2-3 poops (maybe a week), I once had a deep fissure created by an undigested sharp nut and that healed after several weeks of bleeding. It is possible to have a deep fissures that needs stitches but I would suspect after 4 months even that would have healed unless it keeps reopening (if the bleeding is getting less with time this may be the case). I would definitely recommend a colonoscopy to see if you have any internal hemmhoroids or polyps or maybe even some other conditions.

  • Hi,I am a 63yo Male 11 years ago I was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had my left kidney removed, The surgeon said it had not spread to my lymph nodes and I didn't have any follow up treatment, over the years I have had several scares, bone cancer, liver and thyroid, for which I had a parathyroid gland removed At the end of may I noticed more blood than usual on the toilet paper,as I have suffered from piles most of my life, but not for about six months prior to this,I then noticed blood on my stools, sort of streaks of maroon coloured,I had a phone consultation with a doctor ,who said he would refer me on the two week rule,I had a call from a gastroenterologist, who said I need a colostomy camera procedure but there is a five to six month backlog due to covid.I have biannual ct scans because my consultant told there is an intermediate risk of the cancer returning,I had a scan in dec 2019,and was told apart from a small cyst on my kidney, that they are not worried about all else was clear,I had blood tests last week and they came back in the normal range,But I am so worried about the wait for the colonoscopy I suffer with acute anxiety because what I have been through and don't know where to turn

  • I wanted to post on this bc over the last couple of weeks I was glued to this forum worried about my girlfriend who is 27 and had been bleeding with mucus for the last 5 months, intermittently and then more consistently and heavier to the point where it was every day. Strangely she maintained a regular consistency and didn’t increase the visits to the loo. Also she had bloating and loud stomach gurgling She was recommended an urgent colonoscopy after a stool sample for occult blood. I was completely prepared for the worst and luckily she came back with procitis, the doctor was very reassuring and she’s responded q quickly to meds. The symptoms were very severe I’m amazed it was a mild case. Wish everyone the best. (Sorry if you’ve seen the same post in different threads, just wanted to post this experience to offer some reassurance)
