New and scared!!

Hi everyone,

I've come into contact with cancer before, my lovely Mum was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in 2008. She bravely fought it for almost a year before it claimed her, it was not very nice!!

For the last 12 /18 months I've not had any period, I'm 52 now. My doc told me is gone through the menopause, I had slight shows of either blood or a brown discharge on and off.

Then in March i had quite a bit of blood and very large blood clots for about 3 days, which I was concerned about, I went to the doc's the next day and he said that I would be referred to the hospital for tests.

During the last 12 months or so I've also been experiencing excruciating stomach pain, it will suddenly come on, even bending over can cause me to be double up on pain.

Anyway, I've been to the hospital, I've had a hysteroscopy and biopsy, the most painful thing that I've ever had done, no anesthetic.

Now is the wait, I've had a slight discharge and stomach ache since the hysteroscopy, the doc at the hospital didn't say how long it would take for the results to come through so really worried!!!

How long should I wait for the  results from the biopsy and do i hear via letter, my own doc or phone call?

Jan

  • Sorry can't help with answers as I'm a breast lady ... but just wanted to say hi ... and welcome to our chat page ... all I can say, is waiting is what cancer is about ... you wait for appointments  / tests / scans results and operations... that's why they put us in a "waiting room"  and why they call us "patients "   coz we need lots of it ...

So hang on in there ... you can always try and chase them up ...  Drs usually get results too ... but will probably only give them face to face .... always good to take someone with you ... high 5 when o.k and a hand to hold if needed ... fingers crossed for you ... Chrissie x

  • Hi Jan,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. I lost my mum to ovarian cancer sixteen years ago.

I have had a pipelle biopsy and hysteroscopies with local and general anaesthetic. Following both the hysteroscopies, my consultant was able to tell me her suspicions there and then(but needed confirmation). Following the one under GA (I had also had an MRI at by this point), she told me that she was almost certain that I had cancer. This was confirmed this week at a consultation with her following the biopsy result.

Was your referral to the hospital classed as urgent? If so, there are targets/deadlines that the hospital will try to adhere to. All of my appointments so far have taken place within two weeks of the last one.

Try not to worry too much, my consultant told me that 90% women with postmenopausal women do not have cancer. There are other causes of postmenopausal bleeding eg polyps and fibroids. When did you have your biopsy? Maybe give your GP a call to see if they can either give you the result, or point you in the right direction.

    Lots of luck! xx

  • Hi,

I first saw my doctor half way through March and I had my referral to hospital within 2 weeks.

I had a transvaginal first then had a hysteroscopy and biopsy afterwards, it was excruciating as no anesthetic whatsoever.

I was treated for anemia back in January but they weren't sure why I was anemic and couldn't find a reason, after a month on iron tabs my next blood test came back ok.

I'm having another complete blood screen as still really, really tired but also to see if anything shows up!

The doctor at the hospital was not very forthcoming when asked if everything looked ok and said they would let me know!!

    Thank you

    Hi Jan,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am sorry to hear about your mum. I lost both of my parents, several family members and close friends to cancer and have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 8 years. Waiting for the results of tests is always a scary time. When in March did you have these done? I have learnt to always ask how long it is likely to be before I get the results before I leave after every test. You might find this helpful to do in future.

Why don't you phone up the hospital and ask when you are likely to hear? - If you cannot contact the right department, ask your GP.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jan. I just wanted to give you an answer because sometimes posting on the weekend it can be a long wait to hear from the nurses on Monday. I’m sure they will pick it up today though. That sounds awful that you had a painful test done with no anesthetic I can’t believe that this can be done. It sound like you should go and see your own gp to get more info especially about how long you need to wait. You can also phone the nurses on here the number is at the top. They should be open now. All the best. Xxx

  • Hi Jan,

I hope that you are doing well today.Have you not heard anything regarding your hysteroscopy/biopsy result? I had my second hysteroscopy on 22nd March. The consultant told me that she was almost certain that I have cancer as I was coming round from the anaesthetic. I had the diagnosis confirmed a week ago today, and a copy of the consultants letter to my GP confirming this, arrived with me today. If you are still waiting and your GP has no information, you could try getting the number for the secretary of the doctor who did your procedure? If you know the doctors name, try googling gynaecology department of the relevant hospital and it may bring their secretarys number up. I honestly believe that you would have heard by now if they had found anything sinister.

I was officially diagnosed with stage one endometrial cancer a week ago. The only bleeding I had was three miniscule losses of brown "end of period" discharge each being no more than 3mm. These three episodes were over a 8-9 month period. I thought that as I am postmenopausal  my body was just expelling old matter. The only bleeding I have had was immediately following my pipelle biopsy (yep, that hurt!), and my 2 hysteroscopies. The only pain that I have had was immediately post procedures. So the fact that you have had substantial bleeding and pain does not automatically mean  you have cancer.

It is interesting to read that you had a brief period of anaemia. I too had this in 2016 and was put on an urgent 2 week referral to the gastroenterology department. I had a colonoscopy where a small benign polyp was removed, and a gastroscopy where a rare (benign) stomach polyp was found. This was removed 16 months later. No cause for my anaemia was ever found and it righted itself without medication after a couple of months. I have been fine ever since.

    Lots of love xx

  • Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. What will be the nex t treatment you have to have?

I only had my hysteroscopy and biopsy last Wednesday, 4/4, the procedure was done without any anesthetic, the doctor said if I wanted any then I would need to come back on another day. I carried on never thinking it would be so painful, I'm sure the poor nurse didn't have any fingers left after I'd finished squeezing them. After the hysteroscopy had finished i was in a dreadful state, floods of tears and stomach cramps.

i only had one episode of postmenopausal bleeding and that was about 2 weeks before the hysteroscopy. It came on suddenly and was very heavy with lots of blood clots every time I went to the toilet.

So I've possibly got a while longer to wait for my results?

I'm having a full blood test on Thursday, possibly because I'm still very tired but also to see if anything shows up.

Since the hysteroscopy I've also been having stomach pain every day so still on the painkillers.

Thanks for getting back to me

    Jan x

  • Hi All,

So I ring up the hospital as it's 2 weeks since I had my hysteroscopy and I was thinking that although I had a biopsy as well i should really of heard from the hospital. I got through to the secretary and she said that the doc had not been in for the last week, she's back on Wednesday and she will look at all the results then and I should hear something by next week!

I've been worrying myself silly over this, still getting pain every day, sometimes it's similar to a period pain but thankfully no blood, the rest of the time it's a dull ache, there in the background, so still on the painkillers.

Back in school now after Easter holiday, I'm a TA, so having to stock up on tablets in case I get cramps while in work.

    Here's hoping
