CA125 raised levels

This week I went to see my GP with perimenopausall issues. I mentioned to him that I feel my stomach up to my ribs is bloated and tight and feels uncomfortable.  He said he would add some further tests to the hormone bloods to mark for any tumours.  And a pelvic and stomach ultrasound wodo be ordered as well. Within 24 hours y bloods came back abnormal raised at 59. I am now on 2 week pathway to see gynae and have further tests. Peopl keep trying to reassure me that it might not be the big C but as I read more I realise I have been experiencing Ovarian cancer symptoms but thought it was just me putting on weight.

All my our bloods came back normal including the hormones which are strange as I havery multiple menopausal symptoms that are ruined the quality of my life.

I am 46 and am going crazy having to wait.

  • I suffer with ibs. And they did say that bowel inflammation makes the ca125 rise. U will be ok. Try not to worry. I know it's hard

  • Hi there, Thought i would reply as i'm also in a similar situation (i made another thread post recently but plenty of answers here too!

I have had 2 CA125 come back at 47 and 51 and am awaiting my ultrasound. I'm worried due to the feeling of bloating in my stomach as well as abdominal pains.

Can I ask what your symtoms were? I would assume you are just getting the MRI as a precaution due to the small cyst?

  • Hello

I too went to my gp about bloating and general ibs symptoms (which I've had for years, but seems to be worse lately). They ran some bloods and a stool sample and all came back fine apart from slightly raised ca125. Had my bloods repeated and came back as same level (54). Had an ultrasound(and transvaginal)and was convinced they would find something but sonographer said everything looked fine - he checked all upper organs too. He did spot a small cyst but I have had these in the past. He didn't seem concerned by it and said these levels can be raised for many reasons - doesn't stop us worrying though does it?!

The standard procedure is to be referred to a gynaecologist to investigate further . I am lucky enough to have healthcare through work so had my consultation and she said she would like to do an mri just to rule out everything. If all is clear then she will refer me to a gastroenterologist. I think they are just being extra cautious. Just anxiously awaiting my scan now but feel pretty relieved that the ultrasound didn't show anything worrying.

Another thing to bear in mind is that worry and stress will make your tummy symptoms MUCH worse - take it from me, I've suffered for years with ibs and stress definitely sends my tummy into havoc!!

hope all goes well with your scan xx

  • Thanks, I seem to always be worrying lately! Thanks for responding xx

  • Thank you for your reply,

see that's the thing, I've never really had Ibs symptoms or tummy problems so this is quite out of character which is worrying me. I have pretty much convinced myself I have a cyst, I don't really see how else I could have these symptoms , plus the abdominal pain which pre dates the Ibs, plus a bloated belly? Before all this kicked off I joked to my friend saying i know it's bad when my belly gets fat (as it's always last ) but now it doesn't seem so funny, when I look in mirror there's a definite pouch right below my belly button.

I am hoping and praying that with my age and no family history etc if I do have a cyst it'll be benign , my main worry is fertility as I haven't had kids but keep telling myself I'm far away from that point at the moment but it's hard.

I also have a health care plan with work which covers mRi should I need it.

your situation really does just sound like a precaution. If they found a small cyst that sounds like your answer .

can I ask was it sore getting the TV scan? Did they tell you there and then they found a cyst ?

  • Hi, yes they told me there and then but again, this was on my healthcare. He said it was very small and fluid filled so nothing to worry about.
The gynaecologist reassured me as she said the results were not worryingly high and would normally be a lot more raised with a more serious problem. She also said that bowel issues can raise ca125 so again this made me feel a bit better.

I will feel a lot better once the mri scan is done.  The TV scan was fine, I didn't know beforehand that that would be done, so was shocked! But honestly I'd say it's not as uncomfortable as a smear and they get a very good look at your ovaries so well worth it. I'm sure you will be fine, try not to worry...I know it's easier said than done! Xx

  • That is reassuring to know that they would expect it to be more raised if it were serious.

my gp told me that they may do both. Just fed up of the waiting and the anxiety is nearly crippling me.

It's funny though, when I re took my 2nd ca 125 the laxatives they gave me cleared whatever I had up largely so I felt okay. Then once the doc called up with the test results my tummy problems came back with a vengeance, so maybe you are right in terms of the stress causing a lot of this!

hope your mRi goes fine x

  • Definitely! My stomach has been all over the place since I found this out! I'm sure you will be fine. Let me know how you get on xx

  • Hi all,

I had a CA 125 blood test on Friday my level has come back at 83, the receptionist said my doctor will discuss this with me at my review on Friday, do you think she would ring before if she was worried.

    83 seems high to me.

    Thanks.

  • I had a CA125 test done Tuesday after speaking to Dr about what I thought were menopause symptoms. Result Wednesday which was 175. Now I'm worried especially after seeing everyone's results on here which aren't as high. Have a scan on 7th April. Waiting is the worst part.
