Cervix abnormalities, Urgent referral

Hi,

Im in a terrible state after being given an urgent referral to a gynaecologist. Last week during a routine smear test, the nurse said she could see an abnormality above my cervix. She stated it looked like a reddish/purplish blood blister. She immediately telephoned the surgery’s GP who specialises in ‘women’s health’ & she agreed to free up an apt for today.

Follwing examination the GP said she could certainly see what the nurse had described & that it bled easily upon examination. The GP examined me further & said she could feel abnormalities across the whole surface of my cervix. The leaflet I was given about my 2 week urgent referral states it is because my symptoms or examination could indicate cancer.

She asked me if there was any family history of cervical or breast cancer, which there isn’t. I had an abnormal smear, CIN 3, apx 20yrs ago, but following treatment for this, my smears have always been normal.

Im terrified, I have two little boys & my mind is running away with me. Does anyone have any experience of these symptoms or any advice? Thankyou to you all xx

  • Hiya after some advice I have found a lump on cervix on a 2w referral awaiting appointment have watery discharge bleeding quite alot and in-between periods even though I'm on depo and mini pill. Pain in stomach which sometimes floor's me as if someone Is stabbing me pain during intercourse all the time which goes to my legs. I'm after a bit of reassurance as I'm torturing myself. My appointment is on Monday. Lump is around the size of a pea but doesn't seem to be growing in the last week and a half.

    Thank you in advance

  • hey girls , i'm in a pretty similar situation at the moment . i had my last smear test done 2 years ago all was fine , but the nurse did say i had a eurosen. i've had bleeding after sex a couple of times and i can now feel a pea sized hard lump at the opening to my cervix . really worried at the moment . i'm getting a gp telephone app next week .

  • Hi Louise

sorry to hear you're worried. It seems a lot of posters here have mentioned small lumps, and most of them have turned out to be harmless polyps, which do tend to bleed. It's great that you're getting a GP appointment and getting checked out, but try not to worry.

  • I'm also worrying at the moment, went for a cervical exam as I had one incidence of spotting a few days after my period and backache, and the GP said she could see a pinky orange section on my cervix, which bled easily when swabbed. I got another GP to look at it too and she said it looked like ectropion but it was only one small patch above the cervix hole (OS), which isn't how ectropion presents, so she's referred me. She said she's 50/50 on whether it could be something more sinister, but that if it is, it looks like it would be early stages. It didn't bleed on contact this time, and she said it was smooth.

I can't seem to find any info on how cervical cancer actually looks on a cervix, apart from photos where it's very advanced and the cervix looks terrible. Lots of articles say CIN1/2/3 isn't visible to the naked eye, so I've been driving myself to despair thinking it must be actual cancer as it's visible.

I've driven myself to the edge of sanity looking up ectropion, cervical cancer, cell change images etc. I now also seem to be suffering from needing to wee a lot and I'm noticing some watery discharge, but when I go to check there's only a very little there. I suffer from terrible anxiety and chronic stress so it's no surprise new symptoms have appeared, my mind is so suggestible. I've got a private gynae appointment tomorrow, and I'm 100% convinced he's going to tell me it looks like cancer and I need a biopsy. I'm having a transvaginal scan too, and again I'm convinced the cancer will have spread. I've got a lymph node I can feel quite distinctly in my groin if I press, and I feel like this is an indication I've got me static cancer. I don't know what I actually want from writing this, I just can't cope and needed to get it all out x

  • Just a quick update from me, I ended up having a private appointment with a gynaecologist this morning, he gave me a thorough examination and a transvaginal ultrasound and could find no evidence of disease anywhere. He said the mark on my cervix didn't present as cancerous at all and looked like a small cyst. I'm getting a colposcopy next week to double check but all in all it looks like good news for me. I'm so grateful and also this has given me the kick up the bum I need to talk to my GP about starting some anti-anxiety medication, I got myself in to such a state this week I couldn't even function, and that's not right.
