enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi I've been on the phone to doctors again saying about my temperature, he said that's not high. I don't know whether you know about this but I expierced Pulsatile tinnitus today when I woke up it was horrible. This was after I spoke with the doctor made my anxiety go sky high with worry. Doctor said we have done a lot of test, 2 blood tests, ultrasound and seen ENT with camera down my nose to throat and everything has come up negative. Should I worry about Pulsatile tinnitus?
    thanks for messaging back xx

  •

    Hi Kim,

I am not a doctor so cannot comment on the cause of your Pulsatile Tinnitus. I have however had a quick look at it in the medical books and note that it can be caused by emotional stress.

Try to stop worrying. Your doctors are happy and you should be too. There are many of us on this forum who would love to have received the news that you have had. Make the most of it and get on with the rest of your life.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone.

Iv been reading through this post for the last 24 hours.

I'm 31 currently been feeling unwell, on and off for months.

Had many tests, inflammation markers are always higher than should be but apparantly not too concerning. I'm currently waiting on lost tests results for lupus.

Iv been having all sorts of aches and pains saw a physio and was told by her that she thinks I possible have something going on with hips as for my age my resistance is awful however because of my age gp was dismissive of this but agreed I could have a hip xray.

A few weeks ago I had painful lymph nodes under chin and in neck but couldn't really feel anything. I then had a lump in arm pit which has slowly gone down but a have lots of lymph nodes I can feel in both sides of groin now I'm worried that it's all something more sinister and I should of spotted this earlier.

Groin lymph nodes have been present for a few weeks now. I have a call back fr doctor on Thursday.

I have health anxiety and when I get really stressed I do find it hard to function. We're literally just before Christmas and I want to be able to enjoy it.

    Sorry for the ramble.

  • Hey,

I was in a very similar position to you around 9 months ago.
ill tell you a bit about my experience

I had a painful lump on my armpit and I automatically assumed it's either breast cancer, lymphoma or leukaemia. After around 1 month I was able to persuade my GP to send me to get an ultrasound. I got 2 done. The first one said there is nothing there and the second one was able to detect what it was. Which it was a sebaceous cyst. I later on had a surgery to get it removed because it kept becoming infected and antibiotics stopped working. The whole process of healing was the worst pain.

what I'm trying to make you understand is at that time before the whole diagnosis my head was going a thousand miles per hour. I was an actual mess. I was in university first year second term and my grades were really bad because I couldn't pay attention. I was just scared of the worst and what could happen. I couldn't focus on anything because it was always on my mind and everytime I thought about it my heart would sink. I feel like that is when I realised I had health anxiety.

so basically... being stressed and not being able to carry on with your day to day life is normal. It's your health and you are worried very rightfully. But we have to try to understand no matter how hard it is that even if it is the worst outcome you have thought of it hasn't happened yet... nothing is confirmed... you will be putting yourself through the stress two times if it did happen. And we do not know what the actual root cause of all of your problems are.

if you need to have a chat about anything, anyday, anytime. I'm here.

i really do hope you get the best outcome possible and find out what the reaosn you are feeling like this is.

    have a nice day

    MELLISA

  • Hi, mellisa

Thank you for getting back to me.

I'm more concerned because it's groin and it's normag associated with lower body infections which I don't think I have.

Iv also been having gastric issues. Had lots of tests all came back as fine except inflammation, initially GP said some people's inflammation is just slightly raised and that all other tests are reassuring.

As you can imagine iv already convinced myself death is imminent and I'm just waiting for someone to confirm it.

I initially went to Dr's last week for feel dizzy and sick which I assumed was neck related - no conclusion to this. Very tired on and off but could be anxiety related.

But I'm so exhausted with it now.

    Xx

  • Hey,

a high inflammation marker can mean many things, which includes things that aren't so serious.

have you gotten any results, anything to update me on?

  • Hi,

Antibody tests for autoimmune diseases was positive and due to symptoms GP thinks its likely yo be Lupus, iv been reffered to rheumatology for further testing.

  • Hi,

at least the chances of it being cancer is low now. It coukd be lupus but it could also be many other autoimmune disease.

    good luck with everything.
how are you feeling in yourself

  • Thank you.

I'm feeling a bit under weather at the moment but slow improvements are happening.

Just hope to get some solid answers sooner rather than later so I can move forward with feeling better.

    I appreciate your responses.

  • Hi, hoping you're stil able to see this, what we're your symptoms and what autoimmune disease did you have?
