enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi all, just joined today. My issues started with kidneystones in dec 20.

When they did the first MRI scan the urologist confirmed i have 1 kidneystone in my left kidney and three in the right.

They did a second MRI scan a month or so later and that also confirmed presence of kidney stones.

however on this occassion the uroligist informed the MRI has detected inflamed / Swollen nymph nodes.

I was referred to have MRI scan and Ultra Scan

Ultra scan was for checking testicular cancer - MRI for prostrate - both scans came out negative - they had also done some blood tests before the MRI scan and they were all clear bar slightly anemic.

However the nymph behind the stomact was still enlarged (1.5cm) hence I have been booked for CT Guided Biopsy Stomach on 17.6.21

Looks like the consultants are suspecting high chance of either hodgkins or non hodgkins cancer.

    Hi AP63,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about this confusion. It is good news that all tests so far have been clear and, here's hoping that your CT guided biopsy will be too. Most people find that their lymph nodes can swell as a reaction to any sort of infection. This can be from something as simple as a sore throat to something more serious. In most cases they settle down within a short while, but sometimes they can remain up permanently for no particular reason.

Your consultant is obviously being cautious and making sure not to miss anything, which is good. Are there any plans to remove your kidney stones. I am not a doctor, but suspect that these may be causing the changes in your lymph nodes. We always advise people to steer clear od consulting 'Dr Google' before a diagnosis, as this will only scare you for no particular reason.

I am glad to see that you don't have too long to wait for your biopsy. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

My fingers are crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you for the welcome and response. I feel eased reading your post.

With regards to my kidney stones - they will have to be removed via laser surgery but as yet i have not been given any date.

I suspect it is because the medics want to get to the bottom of my lymph nodes before doing laser

I will keep the forum posted.

Once again thanks for your support.

    Kind regards

    AP

    Hi AP,

I haven't had kidney stones, but I have had a 3 inch gallstone, which had to be removed by open cholecystectomy. I know that at that time I had a lot of inflammation surrounding the area, although at the time I never even thought to check my lymph nodes. I do hope that you don't have too much delay  for your surgery.

Please remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi

One of my KS ia around 9mm and urologist hencd the  need for laser surgery.

Like you i never thought if lymph nodes until the urologist told me. It's only than I started reading on it!

It's good to share experiences we have had and moral support available.

Once again,  thank you so much for your support.

    Regards,

    AP

    Hi,

Did your urologist not attribute the lymph node swelling to the inflammation caused by the kidney stomes? When I went to see my surgeon, I felt that I was wasting his time, as I found it hard to describe exactly how I felt and, I didn't want to waste his time.

He took one look at me and admitted me there and then. He told me that he couldn't guarantee that he could pull me through and put me on to intra-wenous antibiotics for a week before he could operate. I understand that kidney stones can be pretty uncomfortanle too.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • No  the consultant has not made reference to kidney stones as reason for enlarged nymph nodes - that is whats worrying me thinking that i will.be diagnosed with a form of cancer.

I have a feeling deep down the urologist knows i have it but he wants the biopsy to comfirm it.

    Hi AP,

We all tend to think the worst at this stage - fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case.  Even if your consultant feels that this might be cancer, there is no way of being certain until he gets the result of a biopsy. Just remember that 'it isn't cancer until you're told it's cancer.'

I have had 2 bouts of cancer, but have had 3 other occasions when my consultant thought that I had cancer, which turned out not to be the case after biopsies were carried out.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi everyone,

I've had a bit of a whirlwind of a year to be honest.

I gave birth to my second in March 2020 and shortly after began suffering with horrendous vertigo issues. I managed to get it sorted and was diagnosed with vestibular migraines.

I am a teacher and went back to work September 2020. Feb 2021 I came down with what I thought was covid. ALL covid symptoms, but my tests kept coming back negative.

I have never suffered with chest problems, but this infection dragged on for 4 months. I now see a chest specialist monthly and take a steroid inhaler. Chest X ray came back clear thankfully. This infection (whatever the hell it was - they still can't tell me), put me in urgent care twice for breathing difficulties and in the first few weeks I couldn't even walk from my living room to the kitchen without having to sit down because I felt like I would pass out. I am a 30 year old healthy woman with no underlying health conditions.

About 2 months ago I began having night sweats and found a lump in my neck. My GP put it down to the tail end of the nasty chest infection. My chest specialist also said his gut feeling was that it was nothing to worry about as overall I was making massive improvements but to keep an eye on things.

I returned to my GP a couple of weeks after to say that although the night sweats were getting better I was still concerned about the lump. She has referred me for an urgent US and ordered blood tests. All blood tests came back with no further action required.

I have since found out I am pregnant with my 3rd which was quite a shock but still, every child is a blessing and I am still over the moon! At the weekend I also found another pea size lump in my neck. This one doesn't move, whereas the other one is more like the shape of a grain of rice, moves and is rubbery. Neither are painful.

Of course like any human, I've consulted Dr.Google and he is telling me some horrible things. I'm a Science teacher so try to think logically but when human emotion takes over, what can you do really.

I also have a large lump behind my ear, but I have had this for as long as I can remember. Must be 20+ years. Doesn't move, kind of rubbery, never painful, just always been there. Never went to the doctors, as I said I've had it as long as I can remember, so it's always just been 'a part ' of me. I do remember having a very nasty bout of glandular fever when I was younger so thought maybe it was from that.

Anyway now since I have discovered the 2nd lump in my neck, I'm now panicking about the 20+ years lump. Sleepless nights. Pregnancy hormones probably don't help but I seriously can't stop thinking about how I cannot be ill for the sake of my children.

US booked for 5th July and hoping that they tell me that I'm just a big worrier and I've spent the last month worrying for no reason....

    Hi Mother.of.boys,

Congratulations on pregnancy number 3 and a very warm welcome to our forum. The first thing to do for your own peace of mind, is to contact your GP and see what s/he thinks of these other swollen nodes. The second is to steer clear of consulting 'Dr Google' as this will only scare you further and serve no useful purpose. We always advise people to stay away from the internet until they know what they are dealing with, as so many of us interpret our symptoms as something serious, when they're not.

I do hope that your scan on 5th July helps to answer some questions for you. Please keep in touch and let us know. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
