enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi,

I'm new to this and not sure if I'm posting in the right place! I'm 22 and I have had a rash for over a year now that has been on and off extremely itchy on my lower abdomen on both sides, it has gone from redish to brownish and and comes and goes alongside itchiness that has been particularly bad at night. It hasn't responded to steroid and other fungal treatments and has very slowly grown over the year and mycosis fungoides is the only thing I have found that matches the description in looks and itchiness. Over the past 3 months a few glands on the left side of my neck have grown larger than the right side also. I am getting a full blood count on Monday and scared sick for the result. X

  • Hi,

girlll I know exactly how you feel. I'm sure you've Googled all your symptoms and it's said it's a type of cancer but then you got to think about it in a positive aspect as in your could google a cough and it would say you have throat cancer.

I haven't had itching but every body is different. The otching could be caused by many things and you should try and think positively (I know it's really hard)

the swollen glands on your neck could be caused by many many things. Like a sore throat you had and the lymph nodes swelled up or just reactive lymph nodes that can react when you have an infection in your body. Like your body will fight the infection of without you even knowing and swollen lymph nodes can be the cause of that. Are the lymph nodes that are swollen moveable and how big are they. Like a pea grape or a gold ball?

I got a blood test around 1-2 weeks ago and everything was fine apart from my CRP levels which measures the inflammation levels but then i do have Crohn's disease which is an inflammatory disease and my WBC's were also a little high which I was really quick to think it was leukaemia but my doctor did reassure me and said it's not that high for it to be leukaemia. The WBC counts could be high due an infection your body is fighting of too.

What you have to do now is wait until you get your bloods done. Try to distract yourself and don't google or watch videos about diagnosis because that affects the mental health a lot.

good luck. Keep us updated ️

    Hi Mellisa,

I'm so glad to hear that I've helped to stop you worrying so much and I hope that all turns out well for you.

    HI Tigerbilly,

A very warm welcome to our forum. Where you are posting is fine. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms - these must be very annoying. You have done the worst thing possdible and self-diagnosed following your searches. I am not a doctor and wouldn't try to diagnose. There are still a number of simpler causes than what you are imagining - for instance have you considered an allergic reaction to clothing, washing powder, soap, etc?

I hope that your blood test can back this up on Monday. Please keep in touch and, let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you! It's nice to get my worries and thoughts out in writing!  You are right, I know there would be a simpler cause and I'm trying to hold onto that, it's just when it's becomes a bit of a stuck record in your head that that's what it must be!

I've been trying to push for a skin biopsy as the symptoms are so similar and the rash has behaved in such a similar way to Skin lymphoma with no treatments working (started as a dry, red, extremely itchy patch on one side of my lower abdomen, that slowly developed to another patch the other side in the same place over my glands in my abdomen, they have now been developing to a darker pigment of my skin and have become slightly mottled, occasionally flaring up to become extremely itchy again), alongside my cervical lymph nodes enlarging, potentially being connected with my lower abdominal area where the rash is.

I need to wait for my bloods and try to enjoy being around my family as I'm very lucky to be during the pandemic!

Sorry for the long read xx

  • Hi,

Yep googled it relentlessly haha, it's in search for more answers that half of me knows I won't get!! I don't feel as though I have an infection but have felt generally run down for around a year, since my rash appeared! The lymph nodes are movable but fairly firm and rubbery, around the size of a grape I'd say.

I'm really glad tour bloods came out okay <3

Thank you so much, I keep you updated! xx

  • Hiiiii

i will be praying for your bloods to come back all good. Apart from the lymph nodes and rash do you gave any other symptoms as what your experiencing could be an autoimmune disease that they haven't found out. No saying you do. Just an example.
Do you know when the results of the blood test is going to come back?

    xx

  • Helloo,

Thank you so much! No really giving any other symptoms, apart from recent missing periods and spotting inbetween and feeling generally unwell with bouts of fatigue and shortness of breath?? Not sure if that means much. Yeah it could be an autoimmune disease, but I think mentally I should try to prepare myself for the worst so I won't be so shocked if I get that news.

My bloods are being taken on Monday so I should get those by the end of next week maybe and I am seeing a doctor tomorrow morning in person so they don't just see my rash on photos, it doesn't look like much on photos.

  • Hiiiii

hopefully you will get answers for the root cause of all of this. Because of how much stress I put on myself last month my period was 8 days late which to you that might sound not much but my periods have religiously been coming every 28 days I wouldn't even miss a day. Honestly this best thing we can do is to not stress but get this handled by doctors.
