enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Thankyou for your reply jolamine,

my chest X-ray results came back finally after just over a month (apparently they didn't send them to my doctors for some reason) I had to call up the hospital to find out where they were. They came back all fine apparently so I booked another call with my doctor to see where to go from here and she didn't say much except that she was going to refer me to a haematologist. Im not sure how long should I expect to wait for this referral and what does a referral to one of these mean? I haven't had any ultra sounds or anything done.

    HI,

I am glad to hear that your chest x-ray showed nothing abnormal. I am not a doctor, so I'm afraid that I don't know why your GP has referred you to a haematologist. I wonder if this might be as the result of your borderline thyroid result?

I am glad to hear that the new lump you have found is smooth and moves easily. The nastier ones tend to be fixed and jagged at the edges.I suspect that the wait for a haematology referral might vary throughout the country at present, depending upon what the current pandemic level is in different areas. A lot will depend upon whether your GP has referred you as an emergency referral, which is usually done where cancer is a possiblility. If it is just a normal referral, this could take a lot longer.

I do hope that you don't have too long to wait and that all goes well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi all! Just an update here. I had a pelvic ultrasound a couple of days ago which still showed multiple reactive lymphnodes in my pelvic area. I think the largest was 6mm. I still have no idea why they might be reactive. The ultrasound Dr. recommended I get a follow up scan in 6 weeks to check up on everything, and to also get a transvaginal ultrasound at the same time to check my ovaries etc. Still a lot of digestive issues and bloating/pain over here. The gp is attributing this to ibs (never had it before but I guess it could be stress-induced). Hope everyone is doing ok!

    Hi Char,

Many thanks for the update, although I'm sorry to hear that you are no further forward. I am glad to hear that it is not being left here and, that you are to get a follow up scan and transvaginal ultrasound in 6 weeks. I sincerely hope that these will reveal more information.

Please let us know how these tests go.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Guys!

I'm new to this forum and I don't really know how to work this.
to be honest the only reason I'm here is for me to stop googling my symptoms and loosing my mind over it.

    my story is.....

I had a swollen lymph node on my armpit which was small but painful. I googled and it said to wait for at least 2 weeks to see any changes. The pain of the swollen lymph node on my armpit went away but I could still feel like lymph node as it was swollen. I went to my GP he said it's fine and not to worry which is east for him to say.

After around a month of stressing that I could have different types of cancer the swollen lymph node that was pea sized on my armpit grew legit overnight to a fat grape and the area was tender and sore and red. Called up the doctor she said that it's most likely an infection which she gave antibiotics and it helped so much thank god but the swelling is still not gone  completely but it's like a chickpea size now. The doctors have said an infected lymph node can maybe never go back to its original size and stay swollen. I also asked for a blood test which came back normal apart from the White Blood Cells which were a little high and he thinks it is because of the infection but like it's not 100% and I know that lymphoma cannot always be found in blood test.

around a week ago I just had an idea to feel my neck. I found 2 swollen lymph nodes on my neck. 1 on each side. They aren't big but I'm still dead worried. I went to the GP he felt the lymph nodes and he said that it's movable and I shouldn't worry but I'm just diagnosing myself day by day. Im convinced it could be lymphoma leukaemia myeloma or even breast cancer. I legit hate stressing.

    Hi Mellisa,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am glad to see that you have come to us in an effort to stop googling. This is never a good idea, as Google will have you in a wooden box with a simple cut. I am not a doctor, just another cancer pilgrim. I am aware that people can have reactive nodes which swell up with even a minor infection.

The fact that your arm swelling has reduced in size following a course of antibiotics, indicates that this could have been what happened with you. Your GP is right that some reactive lymph nodes never settle down to the original size. Breast cancer is seldom accompanied by pain, but infection is.

It might be worth watching the nodes in your neck for a couple of weeks and then seeing another GP in the practice for reassurance.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hiiiii,

Firstly Thankyou so much for replying. You have no idea how much it means to me.

its going to be a bit TMI but I was shaving down there and right in the middle u saw a little bump. I've researched to see if there are any lymph nodes in that area but I can't really find information. It's like 4-5cm up from the clitoris. I'm worried that it might be a swollen lymph node too but I'm not sure there are lymph nodes in that area.

Honestly not googling has been so hard like sooo hard it legit unimaginable.

    Kind regards

    HI Mellisa,

Having had 2 bouts of cancer in the past 11 years, I know just how hard it is not to google. However, try to stick to your guns. Lymph nodes are like the circularory system. They are all over the body. As I said before, I am not a medic, but I wonder if these new swellings are just a reaction to the infection you had in your breast/under your arm? Can I ask what age you are, as this can sometimes influence things too? Don't be afraid to see another doctor if they don't settle soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hiii

i am 18 years old going to be 19 in June. I also have Crohn's disease which I'm on medication for so I'm not the healthiest individual.

I had the infection around 2 weeks ago which I took antibiotics for.

its just the little bump down there doesn't feel like a lymph node. Like I can't hold it between my fingers but maybe it's because it's really small but from what I've researched I can't seem to find an image where it says that there are lymph nodes in that specific area but then yet again I'm not sure.

Currently I'm just trying to keep my mind clear and Thankyou for replying back ️

    Kind Regards

    Mellisa

  • Hi Mellisa!

I honestly understand how you feel! I just turned 20 and have been going through the same issues since September/October 2020.

I had a really sore throat for about 6 months straight and after antibiotics and multiple blood tests and swabs I've been referred to the ENT although my tonsils look fine. I also had pain in my underarms and breast area and slightly swollen lymph nodes. The Dr did a check and for my own sanity referred me to the breast clinic. The GP said my age was young and no family history so it was not likely to be breast cancer due to only having pain and no other symptom (thank God). Breast cancer clinic surgeon said the exact same thing and she reassured me that it most likely muscle pain and it did calm down after 2 months.

However, over the past month I have been feeling so ill. My lymph nodes hurt especially in the underarm, sometimes I feel discomfort and pain in my clavicle and my body is so fatigued and painful. I literally can't get through the day without at least one painkiller. Which doesn't sound like much but for a young usually healthy individual it's a bit odd. I also find myself being really itchy some days without any rash and ofc I didn't help myself by googling what might be wrong with me.

Google the saviour is out here to kill us I promise!

Anyway don't mind my sob story Just thought that hearing from someone similar to your age would help you calm down and ease your nerves. Don't google anything and ofc if something gets worse do contact your Drs.

You're probably in your first year of uni? I'm in my second and it's terrible feeling ill as uni itself is so stressful- especially with exams around the corner.

you're going to be fine and you will battle through whatever the diagnosis! Stay strong and remember to have fun and live your life to the fullest everyday. Also please don't google anything anymore
