enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

    Hi LJ96,

I hope that your test results are better than you expect tomorrow. Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi hope all ok ive got the same symptoms how did you get on

  • Hi Jolamine,

She has been referred for a blood test tomorrow (or as soon as one can be arranged). Neither of us could really tell what the GP said it was looking for but we didn't hear cancer in there (which I'm assuming would have been mentioned?).

Hopefully we'll be able to get a blood test booked in ASAP. I'll come back when I've got an update.

    Kind regards xx

  • Hi Again,

Occurred to me that my partner was diagnosed with arthritis this year and I'm wondering if that could have anything to do with it.

LJ, I hope you got on okay.

    Zeb xx

    Hi Zeb,

Wnen bloods are taken, samples are often sent off in different vials to test for different things at the same time. I am not a doctor, so cannot confirm whether or not arthritis could have anything to do with all this. I know that some cancer treatments can cause arthritic flare ups. I would also expect that when your immunity is low, you are more likely to pick up diseases like cancer, but I may be wrong about this.

It doesn't usually take long for blood test results to come back, so I hope that she gets her test soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Just thought I'd give a quick update. I had to have my bloods redone due to the Dr surgery not sending off the right blood form. These bloods came back clear. However, I now have about six enlarged lymph nodes in my neck and head and I am waiting on a referral for an ultrasound which I was referred for three weeks ago tomorrow and still haven't heard anything back but I don't know if this was out on the two week pathway as the doctor wasn't concerned and even said that if he was to put his money on something he'd put it on this not being cancer

  • Hi Jolamine,

Bloods have been done and she has a follow up appt on Monday to discuss (was the soonest they could do apparently). On the bloods form they were checking for CRP, renal something, diabetes (I'd assume type 1 as she's very fit and healthy), thyroid function and something else.

The doctor got a second opinion and thinks it's a cyst or a lipoma.

Hopefully everything will be okay when the doctor calls but I wish the call was sooner.

    Hope everyone is well x

  • Hello everyone,

I am very pleased I have come across this post. I am very worried. I know this was posted in 2018, but I hope someone can give me some advice. I feel so scared and physically sick.

On Friday, my boyfriend found a huge golf sized lump on the front of his neck, slightly towards his left. He often has small bumps on his neck that come and go and we thought nothing of it. He also suffers badly with night sweats.

He called the doctor on Friday and they asked him to come in the same day because of the unusual lump on his neck and he was told that it is suspected cancer. :( The lump is hard and can not be moved.

They also found some on his groin area also. He has an urgent appointment next week at the ENT unit for further tests. He is in his early 20s. He has also lost over 3 stone.

I feel physically sick. I don't know what to do. Does anyone else have these symptoms and it turned out to be nothing? Night sweats, golf ball sized swollen lympnode on neck, swollen lympnodes on groin area and weight loss? (I'm unsure if he has them on arm pit).
I am so scared it is cancer. I can't stop thinking about it!

  • Hi all

This thread has been a great comfort to me recently after finding a lump in my groin back in June. I had a telephone appointment with a nurse back then who wasn't concerned but told me to keep an eye on it. Seven weeks later: I had an in person appointment last week with my GP as the lump was still there and my doctor confirmed what I thought it was - just a swollen lymph node. She also wasn't concerned at all and said it's a "shotty" node and it might stay swollen for 10 years while being completely harmless. She's been my registered GP my whole life and she was fully confident that it's absolutely nothing to worry about.

I feel more at ease but I'm also a bit anxious because I didn't have any tests, just a physical examination. Should I press for a test or just trust my doctor? I can also feel a slightly smaller node now next to the first one but not sure if it's swollen or not. I'm 24 years old with no health problems for context.

Thank you and sending you all my best!

  • Hi mollito123, I would ask for tests, if only to put your mind at ease. What is a shotty node?

I've got one, possibly two, hard nodes and I'm currently waiting for ENT but I find myself on here more than I should be...

Edit: I've just googled Shotty Node and you've really helped my anxiety. Never heard that term before, thanks!
