enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi [@Fi82]‍

I am so sorry to hear you are feeling so anxious, I totally know how you feel as I am the same.

I have read your post and honestly please try not to panic, going on Google is the absolute worst as it always brings up worst case scenario and feeds anxiety.

If you have been quite poorly recently it is more likely your nodes are still raised from that, it can take weeks for them to go back to normal or in some cases they don't! I have one node that has been swollen for years after a bad case of tonsillitis. I also have two other hard nodes which have been swollen a while but have been checked out and are classed as reactive.

If you are extremely worried there is no harm in going to your GP to get your lumps checked and reassure you but honestly try not to research and google as it only makes you feel worse and I also think when you are panicking you seem to find other symptoms then panic even more!

    Take care x

  • Thanks so much for your kind reply Farah, I really appreciate it.

I ended up going to A&E this morning as I was having heart palpitations and feeling dizzy all through the night. I have to look after my daughter alone quite often at the moment and honestly, I couldn't have cared for her last night if she'd become ill or needed anything! My doctor is closed at present so I had no other choice. It was actually empty! I felt a bit less guilty once I saw that (plus the doctor was so nice and said not to feel bad).

He gave my neck a total drubbing, honestly I was in pain by the end! But he was definitely thorough and told me I've got a few minorly swollen nodes on both sides, which were small and tender and not worrying him at all. My white blood cell count was fine, which was a huge relief. He put my arrhythmia and dizziness down to stress. The upshot was - I'm not over my previous infections and I'm too run down and stressed, hence swollen nodes!

A tiny part of me (the health anxiety part I'm sure), is still slightly sceptical, and I'll be keeping a close eye on those nodes for sure. I might as well admit to myself now that if they don't go down in the next few weeks, I'll be insisting on an ultrasound, but I think that's fair enough. I can't live with huge anxiety forever... well, at least not more than I currently do! The last few days have been unbearable and aged me a decade I think.

Farah I read your story... have you had all you lumps checked with ultrasound/scans? It sounds like you've had a very stressful time. It's terrible bringing the mother thing in to the mix, adds a huge layer of worry and pressure to be well for our children!

  • Hi,

Sorry to hijack this thread. I am facing something similar at the moment. I have one large ish swollen node in my neck and 2 smaller ones (less than pea sized) close by. I have a few on both sides of my groin also.

i have seen the doctor and had blood taken, which came back clear. The doctor didn't seem worried and suggested that nodes in the groin can be felt in slim people. I have been asked to wait for a month to see if anything changes but I have had the lumps for over two months so am feeling quite anxious and stressed about the whole thing.

I think I can feel some in my armpit also but am not sure. I don't know if reading stuff online has made me over aware of any sort of lump in my body.

I want to push for further testing as am desperate to rule out anything serious but a month seems like way too long to wait.

    thank you

  • Hi [@Fi82]‍

I'm sorry to hear you went to A&E but glad to hear they checked you over and were reassuring, I think sometimes it is easy to work ourselves up with worry.
    have you been ok since?
have your lumps gone down at all?

I am ok thank you, my anxiety has been all over (again) so I went to see my GP and said I wasn't happy that my nodes are still swollen after being advised they are reactive, he has arranged another ultrasound and said if there are any changes to size they will do an FNA, I finally feel after this next appt I can hopefully stop this anxiety as it is taking over my life! Luckily my new GP is great and I think whatever happens he will help me work through this awful anxiety over my lumps.

I would just like more answers though than they are 'likely reactive'

    Anyway hope you are well.

    take care x

  • Hi [@HenB112]‍

I am sorry to read you are feeling worried about swollen lymph nodes, I know all too well about that.
After reading your post my advice would be to try and feel reassured in what your Dr said and do not google! This will amplify any worry!
I have swollen nodes in my neck that have been there years, I've had multiple checks and scans and all have always come back ok but it is my anxiety about them that takes over my life.

I would hate for you to worry like I do.

i too thought I had nodes under my arms but it turns out what I was feeling was normal.
If I was you I would keep a diary between now and your next appt, note any changes etc so you can go through with the GP, they might say everything feels fine or arrange an ultrasound for peace of mind but please try not to worry.

I do think it is normal to feel lymph nodes for some people and some stay swollen for years after fighting something off.

Try not to panic and don't google.

I wish I could take my own advice

    take care

  • Hi everyone,

I've been really worried about my lymph nodes recently so I thought I'd post on here. I found a swollen lymph node at the right side of my neck about two years ago now, it's only small and hasn't grown in size since then so I wasn't too concerned. Around late January I found another lump under the right side of my jaw and spoke to a doctor, who told me that it was probably just an infection. I now have two under each side of my jaw, fairly firm and moveable and have rang the doctors five times now and keep getting told to ring back if they persist. I am currently on antibiotics for a middle ear infection, but have had the lumps for months before the infection started. Should I be worried? I keep getting told that it's just an infection but I can't help but google and worry as I have five lumps in total - surely that's not normal? The doctor did say that if they persist then she will send me for a blood test but I feel like nothing is getting done. Does anyone have anything that might reassure me?

    Thanks xx

    Hi Sunshine,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you are getting the run around from your GP. Have you actually seen your GP or have you only had phone consultations?

You need to contact your GP again and to be insistant upon a referral. Don't be fobbed off again. Point out to your GP that this has been an ongoing problem for two years now and needs to be investigated. You certainly need a blood test to rule out anything untoward.

Hopefully, your doctor is correct and it is only an infection. Please keep in touch and letus know how you get on.

We are aways here for you..

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi sunshine,

I agree with what Jolamine has said, they should really be taking a closer look at it. Has a dr ever got to examine you themselves?

If it helps to ease the worries at all, I still have lots of swollen lymph nodes in my neck. I think mine just don't tend to go down once i've been ill, but like you I have 2 under each side of my jaw which feel very firm but moveable. Altogether I have about 8 in my neck which I can feel, so it isn't unusual but it is important for you that it gets checked out.

Let us know how you get on xx

    from a fellow sunshine!

  • Hi justzbiku,

sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I hope things are well with you, did you see the Dr about your symptoms?
In response to your question, yes I do still have them, But otherwise i'm doing ok xx

  • Hi guys,

Thank you for replying, you've helped to ease my mind a little bit. I have only had phone consultations with two different GPS at my practise- never had a physical appointment and I don't think I can at the moment due to COVID-19. I'm currently awaiting a phone call from my doctor as I'm struggling to swallow the antibiotics the 111 nurse prescribed so I'm hoping to change this to liquid and hopefully have something done about my lymph nodes.
I will keep you posted once I know more.

    Thank you all xx
