enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi everyone, I'm currently in a similar situation as most people posting on this thread. It's a little reassuring to read from others with similar symptoms.

i've had a lot of things going on medically since I was 18. Dx'd with a rare autoimmune disorder back then, have asthma, recurring nasal polyps and sinus problems in general. My autoimmune condition was considered quite mild and when it flares I have a high eosinophil count. But all in all, very stable. In 2018 i was diagnosed with endometriosis, for the past 2 years I've had endo symptoms and additional upper right and left sided pain. Was finally referred for an MRI in December which found an ovarian mass they believe to be a simple cyst - having a follow up in a couple weeks time - and adenomyosis. I had an abdominal and pelvic MRI with contrast.
back in October 2019 I noticed neck nodes come up all over my neck down to my collarbone. Initially put them down to a mild cold, the tenderness seemed to go away until I got another bug and back to square one. This has been going on since. A few days after my MRI I noticed a groin ache on my right and GP found a lymph node there too. Then on the other side. Simultaneously a bulge appeared on my groin, soft and squishy. This appears to be an enlarged vein. I have had an ultrasound a couple of weeks ago, the neck and right groin nodes where checked and found to be reactive nodes 1 - 1.5 cm in sizes. The largest in my neck. Last week, my GP checked vitamin levels and found high levels of vitamin b12. I take a multivitamin but the levels were  at 1100 with normal ranges 200 - 900 I believe and slightly raised inflammation markers to do with liver / kidney function I think. GP said possibly from infection. Naturally, I googled and have got myself sufficiently scared again.
i was tested neg for ebv and swollen nodes are absolutely not typical for me. Especially not in the groin. Along with the groin ache and pain from the nodes, I have had persistent lower back and hip pain. Since my MRI was "normal", no one is too concerned but I have been referred to haematology. My appointment isn't until the 6th of April and I have no idea how I'm going to keep it together until then. My home life is suffering greatly, I have small children and being preoccupied with this is horrible. It doesn't make sense to me to have the nodes everywhere. There doesn't seem to be an obvious reason, also b12 high levels are associated with blood malignancies ( thanks google)  Sorry for the long post, hope everyone will get good news soon x

  • Hi all,

I've been reading this threat and hoping for a bit of reasurance, like most people on here I googled my symptoms and have decided I have cancer! I'm 33 years old, have a 2 year old daughter. I've been a mess the last couple of weeks, imagining myself not seeing her grow up. Why do we do it to ourselves?!

I've had a swollen node in my groin, with an even smaller one under it, for as long as I can remember. Definitely years, although unsure as to how many exactly. I got it checked last year and the doctor wasn't worried, said it's too small to refer to a biopsy, and that was that. However about a week ago I noticed a small, less than pea size lump on my neck, not under my jawline where most people seem to have, but on the side and in the middle. It's quite fleshy and moves. I have had a cold for about 2 weeks so I am hoping it's from that, although I'm not sure the lump is in the right place it was a raection to a virus? I went to the doctor this morning regarding some recent bloods (unrelated) and everthing is fine, but I mentioned the lumps. She felt them and said she's not overly worried, asked if I'd had a sore throat which I have. But has referred me for an ultrasound on both my neck and groin.

Safe to say I feel no better after visiting the doctor, I'll now be worrying until they can tell me the lumps are nothing:-(

  • Hello

You know what, I used to be just like you and I think having a child makes you worry more about things. I heard a story once that someone got a call from the hospital and told they had cancer, they accepted it and over a period of weeks became very poorly. Anyway, the hospital called to say it was an error and they didnt have cancer after all. The mind is a powerful force. You can easily let it talk you into all sorts. So if I were you I would keep saying I havent got cancer, I am fit and well. We have all got little pea lumps on the side of our adams apple they are lymph nodes. If you keep messing they will swell up, been there and done that. The next time you go to the doctor please mention these feeling about your worry about cancer maybe he will give you something that will calm your anxiety and let you get on with chasing your two year old round the house.

  • Hi everyone,

ive kind of being going through something similar. I'm an 18 year old female and I suffer very badly with health anxiety so this all has me in a right state.

id never had any throat/chest problems up until last Aug when I got a bad bout of tonsilitis, then in Sep a chest infection, Oct/Nov another chest infection which was way worse, Dec tonsilitis again and January I had another viral infection in my throat which I had blood tests at the hospital for. They came back normal apart from having lymphocytes in them but the doctor didn't seem concerned and said it was probably due to my body fighting the infection.

when I developed the bad chest infection in October, quite a few of the lymphnodes on my neck and under my ears swelled up. They all seemed to disappear bar one on the right side of my neck that I still have today, making it about 4/5 months. It is very moveable, I can roll it around under my fingers and move it up and down/side to side. I can't stop fiddling with it and have convinced myself it's something sinister like lymphoma or leukaemia. I am going to try and go back to the doctors again to get it looked at but when I have went previously they have just said it would be swollen glands due to infections.

it's just concerning me as it is always there even when I have been well for about a month now.

sorry about the big rant, just had to get it all off my chest as I feel with my health anxiety everyone just pushes how I feel to the side and puts it down to that :(

I hope you are all doing well xx

    Hi Ejm,

Welcome to our forum. Unfortunately, I am not a doctor, juust a breast cancer pilgrim. It sounds as if you have been having a hard time with your tonsils, chest infections and inflammatory lymph nodes. Have you had any bother with these before, or is this the first time?

From what I have read, I understand that it can take several months for some lymph nodes to settle down after an infection and, sometimes they never go back to normal. The GP cannot put your swollen lymph nodes down to an infection now, when you haven't had any for a number of weeks, but your immune system could still be low after having had so many nasty infections one on top of the other.Because these were all so close together, it may take you a little longer to get back to normal.

Is there another doctor in the practice that you could see? This would give you a second opinion. Try not to fiddle with the node, as you wll only make it worse with continually touching it.

You are bound to be worried about this, so please make an appointment with your GP as soon as you can and, get it checked out. i sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi jolamine sorry for the very late reply I've been staying off the Internet. I went back to the docs they said I had a slight ear infection so got some drops and said go back in 4 weeks. Next Wednesday is the 4th week and these last few days I'm struggling with the dred again. Some days i forget about it and touch it by mistake and it feels huge others it's hardly there. It's the not knowing thats playing with my mind. I still have no other symptoms what is giving me a bit peace of mind I just feel if the doc told me something good or bad I would have something to focus on. Tonight is the biggest it's felt for a while but my neck has been hurting like I slept funny last night thanks for listening.

    Hi Tony,

Many thanks for your update, although I'm sorry to hear that you are no further forward yet. Your ear infection could also account for an enlarged lymph node. I don't suppose that the doc can tell you much more until your infections have subsided, as I have been lead to believe that it can sometimes take quite a few months for them to settle after the infection has subsided.

The fact that you have no other symptoms is good news and, I'm sure that if your GP suspected anything more he would have referred you for tests.

I hope that the swelling is all just a reaction to the infections and nothing more. Has your ear infection subsided with the drops or are you still aware of it?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on with your GP next week.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi I wasn't aware of my ear infection  so not sure how it is lol. Thanks for the reply and I will keep you updated

  •

    Hi Tony,

That stands to reason. I hope that your GP sees an improvement at your next appointment. You're right. This is the worst time when there are so many unknowns. You will feel better once you know what is wrong. It doesn't really matter whether the news is good or bad, you will still feel better once you know.

Do please keep me updated. I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hey everyone

I hope it is ok to post on this thread, I just need to some advice as I am going out of my mind with worry.

For around 8 years I've had one large lymph node in my neck, I've seen numerous Dr's Who haven't been concerned but sent me for blood tests which have always come back normal.

last year a small, hard, fixed node appeared deep inside my lower jaw bone, I had an ultra sound for this which came back normal.

around 3 months ago another larger hard, fixed node came up inside my jaw further back, this time I was sent to the ENT who checked my throat with a camera, everything looked ok and I had another ultrasound where they would also do a FNA if anything looked suspicious but the Dr didn't think anything did look suspicious so didn't do the needle biopsy.

i also have tinnitus, ear pain that comes and goes and jaw pain that comes and goes

im trying to feel reassured but I still feel like I don't have answers and everthing I've read says hard fixed nodes are often cancerous.

I honestly don't know how to switch off this worry!

has anyone had anything similar? x
