enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

    Hi Connor,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear about the worry that has brought you here.

I am not a doctor, merely one of many cancer pilgrims. You seem to be putting yourself through the purgatory of worry that all cancer pilgrims go through, but there may be no need for all this stress.

You really should do what the doctor at the walk in clinic suggested and, register with a GP in the area where you are now living. If you do this, then you can get the blood tests you were advised to have. Many teenagers become short of iron, as the body changes so much during these years. It could also be that you are run down as a result of the family problems you've had.  This problem is easy to treat with iron tablets, which your GP could prescribe.

When you do see a new GP it might be useful to go armed with a list of questions which you have about your health. As you've already discovered, it is all too easy to forget important questions in the tense atmosphere of an appointment.

Please don't delay in registering with a GP, then hopefully they'll be able to put you at ease about your concerns.

Do please keep in touch andet us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I hope that all turns out well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for the reply jolamine, means a lot . I know I maybe over thinking thing but I’m a bad hypo condriac always have been . I think I should listen to doctors more as I have allready seen 3 in the past 6 weeks to 2 months . None of them mentioned anything to me so I think it’s best I do what they say , thanks again for the reply

    Hi Connor,

If you have now seeen 3 doctors in such a short timeframe, you should be fine and cancer free.

Still, remember that one doctor advised you to register and get some blood tests. It might be worth doing this, as you can begin to feel very lethargic and tired if your iron levels fall too low. It is always better to catch any problem like this early, so that you can avoid it becoming a problem.

If your throat problems don't settle, don't be afraid to go back to see a doctor and don't be afraid to ask questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

    Hi Connor,

Try your best to avoid 'Dr Google'. It never does us any favours. I am glad to hear that you have registered with a GP.

I look forward to getting your update.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi all, hope everyone has been well and is enjoying the nice weather (if you’ve had any!!)

i said in my previous post that my GP was referring me to ENT after my ultrasound and that he said I would probably be waiting a few months, but a week later I got an appointment letter for an appointment on the 1st July (Monday).

Getting the appointment really let me calm down and just put it out my mind, I was just curious really if anyone had any guidance on what may happen at the ENT appointment? I’ve read on many posts about cameras etc, but hearing any experiences would be nice so I know what I’ll maybe expect to happen.

    Have a lovely weekend :)

    Hi Katie,

How good to her some positive news for you at last. I am afraid that I cannot give you any guidance about your ENT visit, as I've never had one, but hope that someone who has experience of this will come along and tell you more.

All I can say is that I'm delighted that your appointment has come through so quickly and hope that it all goes well for you on Monday.

Will be thinking of you then.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you, Jolamine! I can’t wait to get it over with and hopefully leave with good news :) Xx

  • Hi all

I know I’m probably a pain in the butt constantly messaging on this but it’s a good sounding board for me.

had my ENT appointment today and my nodule is U3 on the left, and benign on the right (yippee). I’ve to get a biopsy of the U3 nodule within 6 weeks and back to see the consultant in 8weeks. She took an antibody blood test and a vitamin d blood test - does anyone know what these are for? She said often U3 biopsy’s come back inconclusive; if that’s the case it’s either lobe removal or 3 month watch and wait.

It felt like a whirlwind appointment but things seem to be moving speedy - and I can enjoy my Summer at least before I need my biopsy.

    Hope everyone is okay xx

    Hi Katie,

Never feel that you are a pain in the butt. We all need a sounding board at your stage and you are certainly not a pain.

I hope that your left nodule looks ok when you get your biopsy results, but am delighted that your right one is benign. I am glad to hear that you can now enjoy your summer before you get your biopsy.

Don't forget to let us know how it all goes and, remember that we are always here whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
