enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Everything you say is so true! We know our bodies and no when something is not righ whether it’s something small or big it should be properly checked! So glad you have some further investigation’s in the next few weeks and really hope everything will turn out ok for all of us! Sounds like you found a good GP too!

Let us know how you get on

wishing you a great day too! Xxx

  • Great news that the GP took you seriously.  Hopefully you can start to get thtings sorted!

Can I ask the advice of any of you reading this?  I just phoned for my blood results and they've been marked as normal.  I'm not going to ask for a print out like I usually do and look for chages from last time/try to draw my own conclusions becasue I've realised that this really isn't healthy and doesn't help with the anxiety!!  What would you all do now?  GP suggested in the last appointment that if the bloods were normal then I should ignore the lymph nodes - I'd love to, but am a bit concerned as I don't think lymphoma typically shows up on a full blood count anyway, and neither would many other cancers.  From what I can see it only rules out luekemia. Blood tests is the only investiagation thats been done and I'm wondering if I should be pushing for something more?

  • Hi Becky

It’s good your bloodwork is normal! I can understand though how frustrating this is for you,I know this feeling! I can only speak from my experience as all my blood work has been normal too but I just wasn’t convinced about the constant raised lymph nodes.Yes they stayed the same size for a good ten months but then started to grow bigger again.

If I were you I would at least want an ultrasound, I’m a bit surprised you haven’t had that after the lymph nodes have been up for so long? At least you might feel a little more reassured after an ultrasound and they can see quite a bit on the ultrasound such as size shape plus other criteria they have to see if they appear suspicious ornot. Maybe you could go back to your GP or see another one if you think she won’t help and just explain again how long you’ve had these swollen lymph nodes and that you are worried about them being up for so long! Goodluck with Dr I hope you can get an ultrasound done soon.

    keep us updated! Xxx

  • Thanks Mikks.  Its helpful to know that others feel the same and I'm not making a fuss over nothing!  Its a 3-4 week wait to see a GP at my surgery so I think I'll book in with a differnt Dr for then and see what they say.  By that point they'll have been up for at least 3 months.  I feel like I barely have the energy to keep pushing it, its such hard work!

  • I totally agree. I would push for an ultrasound. All of my bloods came back clear and they tried to say that there was nothing in my thyroid as the tests showed normal bloods.... when I have a 3cm cyst and a 1cm complex’s nodule needing monitored now! So definitely push for what is going to give YOU the peace of mind you need! That’s whats important. Bloods are great, but thy do not show everything!

  • Thank you.  Its so nice to talk to people who understand all of this!  I'll see a different GP and see what they say.  Its really getting me down now, I just want them to dissapear so I can get on with my life -sure we all feel that though!

  • It really is nice to have people who understand how it feels! It’s easy for me to say, but try and stay positive and I’m sure you will find a GP in your surgery that will listen. Keep calm & persevere! Hope you’re okay xx

  • Hi eveyy one hope you are all doing well.

I had my ultrasound done and it came back as a begine lymph node and I also have two cycts on my thyroid gland aswell. Doctor is not overly concerned about it as all was well on ultrasound. I have decided to let it go now and just enjoy life until other wise. The lymph node is still there same size thow some days can get bit bigger and then go back down. Was at appoitmemt today with surgeon about another issue with my spleen and he had a look at it and said sometime in skinny people or if you have a good dig around you can feel lymph nodes or they just stay swollen and they have no reason why. My throat is back to normal aswell which is helping my sanity lol. I spent six months I will never get back worrying and stressing about it and now I just going to enjoy life take each day as it comes and not poke my neck lol hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the sunny weather. All the best to you all and thank you for all your posts as they really did help me knowing I'm not the only person who was going threw this. Xxx

    Hi Danielle,

This is great news. I am glad to hear that you can now put your mind to rest and enjoy life again. We could do with more good news of this type on this forum!

    Kind regards,

    Hi Becky,

Scotland is quite correct. Sometimes we just have to perservere ourselves until we can get a doctor to take us seriously. We know our own bodies best and, know when something is not right.

I sincerely hope that the different GP you see will be more helpful.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
