enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Absolutely! It’s so hard to try and switch off from it, but I feel it’s taken over my life right now! Keeping my fingers crossed that you get positive news and can relax a little soon.

  • Yeah, I too wish Nicci20 all the best for tomorrow, keep us posted - got my fingers crossed.

Day 2 without Omeprazole and my symptoms are still as strong as ever........doh! Please let this head rubbish be a side-effect.

SunshineEm, were you getting other symptoms during the slow growth of the lymphoma? I ask because I too have had positive news back from a neck US and would hate to think they’ve been too hasty in drawing a favourable conclusion.

  • Hi Dave,

I wasn’t actually diagnosed with a slow growing lymphoma, but I had a pet scan with mild uptake in my neck. They basically lit up a bit more than they should have, but not enough for it to be “aggressive” or for them to say 100% this is a lymphoma. It was kind of a borderline result. The haemotologist recommended biopsy to be sure but the US radiologist and an ENT surgeon felt confident they were benign... so here we are today. I try to trust their judgement! They haven’t grown since + i’m young so chances are it was a false positive. My only other symptoms were tiredness & swelling/pain above my collarbone after drinking alcohol, but weirdly enough this only happens very occasionally now. I would perhaps suggest waiting a week or 2 and if the symptoms persist and you don’t feel any better then go back to your GP? Would the side effects from medication wear off instantly, or would it take a few days for the medication to fully leave your system?

  • Hi Em,

I think I read (further up this thread) that it could take up to 4 days for drug side-effects to fade once you stop taking it, so I guess I’ll know the score at the weekend.

If they do fade, I’ll still be going to the GP in order to ask for Zantac as an alternative to Omeprazole to treat silent reflux.

Sorry, I misunderstood your situation - sounds like you had a false alarm (which is nice to read). At my age, I definitely find alcohol can cause pain.......usually throughout the following day!

    Dave

  • its a benign aggressive tumor. Said surgrey is a last resort treatment is tablets or radiothearpy as more success with this than surgrey. When i had ultrasound on 20th march i forgot they found sonething on my right side. So doc said 2day he would get back in touch with ENT to just check nothing further needs looking at.

  • I didn’t even know a tumor could be benign and aggressive - sorry that you’re dealing with this Nicci, I hope you’re okay. Were you expecting this outcome or was it a shock? How are you feeling?

  • i’m glad its benign and he said its 100% not cancer. So now its just the treatment to start. Its put my mind at ease as the last few weeks have been a knightmare. Xx

    Hi Nicci,

I replied to your friend request last night, but it doesn't seem to have registered. If you still want to talk, please make another request and I shall accept again.

It is great news to hear that your tumour is benign and that you don't need any surgery. I hope that you don't find anything untoward from ENT. Still, it sounds as if your consultant is being thorough, which must be reassuring. How many sessions of radiotherapy are you due to have?

I hope that it all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • hi

i was worried about you as havent seen you on here the past few days. Dont know yet till the doc from clatterbridge gets in touch. But it is such a relief its benign. He did was very good i did ask could i still been seen under private care and he said i wpuld have to ask the other docs when i see them but still staying positive. Yes i will send request as i have found your chats have helped me xxxx

  • That sounds really positive then Nicci. Hopefully you’ll have the treatment sorted soon and can start to put this behind you.
