enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

    Hi Nicci,

It does sound as if there is something amiss. This is a rotten way to be told. Your GP would have been better saying nothing until he sees you on Wednesday.

Whatever this is, I hope that it is nothing too serious.

Try to keep yourself as busy as you can over the next few days to distract yourself from the wait.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi again everyone

I finally found this post again completely forgot how I got it in first place.

Since I last posted I have been on two antibiotics for my throat and one for my wisdom tooth. That lymph node sticking around in my neck hasn't got much bigger but still no sign of it going. Doctors said if throat infection comes back I will be sent hospital for iv antibiotics, I don't understand why haven't send me to ent must not be overly worried.

I have my ultrasound on the 9th of May so can't wait to get it over and done with. Still no other symptons apart from stiff neck and odd bit of pain which has me worried could maybe be arthritis??

Have been to the dentist 3 times god love him I have him tortured lol he has checked lumps in mouth out for me and assured me that none are sinister.

I have been trying my best to stay of Google but can be hard especially when on own and mind starts racing.

Isn't it teriible we always think the worst for ourselves? Hope everyone doing well on the chat and all your tests coming back good news. Do you think constantly rubbing these lymph nodes Cound be why they won't go down in size? My mum says my neck just looks swollen and can't see a lump but can definely feel it when I turn my neck a certain way.

Definely cut down the cigges and hopefully next couple weeks be completely of them but the stress doesn't help.

    Xxxx

Hi again Danielle and welcome back.

If you go to 'Waiting for a Diagnosis' on the left hand side, you will usually manage to find your posts there. It sounds as if you are still having a tough time with your throat and teeth. I am not a doctor, but it is possible that your lymph nodes could be swelling because these areas are inflamed and, they should settle down with time. The amount of time they take to settle can vary considerably from one person to the next. Also, it won't help them to settle, if you keep rubbing them.

I know that it is difficult to stay away from Google, but keep trying to do your best. It won't do you any favours!

Good for you  on cutting down on the cigs and, hope that you can eventually lay off them completely.

I'm glad to hear that you now have a date for your ultrasound.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • hi all

hospital cancelled appointment as results not back when i asked about haematology app on monday they said dont think you will need that appointment. They said doc will ring me tomorro or friday with results. Hate this waiting game. Xxx

  •

    Hi Nicci,

I am so sorry to hear that your appointment today was cancelled.

It sounds as if there was no need for you to keep this appointment, if you are going to be told the results over the phone. If there is no need for you to keep your haematology appointment on Monday either, I hope that this means good news.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for when your consultant phones you on Thursday or Friday.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • thank you for your support. Staying positive even though still dont know anything really. But surely if ig was bad news they wouldnt do it over ghe phone. Xx

  •

    Hi Nicci,

A few surgeons do give results over the phone, regardless of whether they are good or bad, but most prefer to give all results face to face. Because your surgeon was already planning to tell you face to face today, I expect that he would still do this if it were bad news.

Hence my hope that it is good news, especially when you were also told that you are not likely to need your haematology appointment.

I may be wrong, but I sincerely hope I'm not.

Saying a prayer for you that all turns out well.

  • Hi all,

My lymph nodes are still swollen bloods came back normal and a throat swab showed strep throat so now on antibiotics. I have several swollen on one side of my neck, one under my jaw, one behind my ear and one under my arm all on the same side of my body. Dr has suggested I take the antibiotics and wait a couple of weeks then if they've not gone down to go back again.

The longer they stay up the more anxious I'm becoming, everything online says that under the arm nodes are not likely to be caused by the strep. I wish I could switch my mind off from it all.

  • hi

i understand the worry you going through, try ti stay positive and if your not happy or dont feel yourself asked for a second opinon.

The hospital have rang my results are still not 100% back. But what has come back is that i don’t need to see the haematology doc. My consultant is only in for 2hrs tomorrow then off next week. His assitant is working next week, they said either consultant will ring me or secretary will either way.

    Hope everyone ok. Xxx

  • Hi, I was given biopsy results over the phone last Thursday by my rheumatologist- SLL/CLL and have just been left. I managed to speak to hematologist secretary today who said I have an appointment for 2nd May. So that is a month of no explanations or chance to ask questions. Feeling very frustrated
