PSA High - is this always bad news?

Hi, my other half (70 years young), has recently had a psa prostate blood test of 16 and is being referred for an mri. No other health problems and still active. Of course always fearing the worst - being so high is this likely to be cancer or could it be anything else?  He had an examination (rectal exam) 5 years earlier but showed nothing. Sorry I know that nobody has a crystal ball but any feedback would be appreciated x

  • Wow, lot going on, hope you all remain as well as can be, thanks for your prompt reply & take care.

  • Hi all,

Had my biopsy done on the morning of Christmas Eve, was more involved than I thought, just a waiting game now, my PSA was high at 4.79 & coupled with MRI results & my dad having Prostate Cancer they wanted to do a biopsy, otherwise I have no symptoms, will possibly find out next week!

  • Hi , I hope it turns out it be ok. Please let us know the outcome.

  • You have what? I will let you know!

  • oops i mean i HOPE it turns out ok :)

  • Hi,

Could I ask did you have back pain or hip pain before you were diagnosed?

    Rebecca

  • Hi Rebecca, i had back pains for 30 odd years it goes with my job carrying metal and gear around so i didn't notice anything different but definitely not hips.

    Sorry not much help.

  • Hi all

My husband aged 57 has been having urine flow trouble for a couple of years.
He finally plucked up courage after much persuasion to go get prostate checked.
He had a blood test last week to check PSA which came back with a level of 30.4 today was his appointment to get examination where is is fully enlarged.
He has had an urgent 2 week referal done today for further testing.
We are both so worried but trying to be positive.
We know all cases are individual and different but with anyone else's experience is their still hope with this level of PSA that it could be a benign condition or should we prepare for a cancer diagnosis?
    Any advice or experiences welcome.

    xx

  • Hi

Yes it's a relatively high reading but remember that a high reading doesn't always mean cancer, it could just be an enlarged prostate.  If it is cancer they always say "you're more likely to die with it than because of it".  There are many types of treatment and because it's slow growing it's also curable. Please try not to worry too much. Just take things one step at a time.

In my case a high reading triggered an MRI which showed a small growth. I had a transperineal biopsy under general anasthethic which confirmed I had low grade 1 slow growing cancer. I'm on Active Surveilance which means 3 monthly psa tests with hosp followup after each one. Then another MRI a year after the diagnosis.

There is so much help and info available you must try not to over worry.  Please message me back if you like

  • Thank you for your reply.
We were waiting for an appointment through nhs but when I phoned they said looking at over a month to them to look at referal letters as they still looking at Decembers referrals. So we have went private as my husband has private insurance with work but I had to get a copy of the referal letter which read. PSA30.49, enlarged prostate and suspicious area on left lobe possible lump. So even more worried now.
we have secured an appointment with urologist surgeon consultant on Thursday so hopefully get more answers then and do t have to wait too long for an mri.
    thank you
