First Breast Biopsy— with guided ultrasound

Hi everyone.  I went for my annual mammogram two weeks ago.  I was told I needed to come back and have an ultrasound.  Now I need to go back in three weeks and have a biopsy guided by ultrasound in my left breast.  What they are seeing doesn’t look like a mass (although I’m confused as to what they are seeing).  I’m TOTALLY freaking out.  I’m 46 years old with no history of breast cancer.

A little background for you.  My mother just passed away from pancreatic cancer 5 weeks ago.  She was diagnosed on Dec 3rd and she passed at 77 years old on the 28th of December.  You can say that the C word is really making me anxious.  I’m trying to deal with the loss of my mom and now I I have this thrown at me.  Overwhelmed to say the least.  I know it might be nothing and I’m trying

not to get overly upset about this but it’s so hard.

Any experience, words of wisdom or advice would be appreciated.  Did I mention that getting a needle in my breast is scaring me a bit too?

Thanks guys for your help.

  • Hi there - so sorry to hear about your Mum - they are so special x  I’ve been through the ultrasound biopsy within the last week - I’ve just turned 47 and was chosen at random for a trial mammogram / like yourself no history of Breast cancer in the family .

I was called back for a second mammogram and totally freaked out - I got In touch with my local hospital who confirmed I had an area of dense breast tissue which they wanted a closer look at .

At my appointment ( 5 days later ) I was given a second mammogram on my left Breast-  and Also required an ultrasound of my breast and lymph nodes - the doctor left the room to check my mammogram  and I could see a photo on the screen of the suspicious area which was circular in shape

She told me because of my age - call backs are really common as its difficult as out Breast’s are harder to read becsuse of the denseness - in fact my mammogram showed a mass really clearly - but the ultra sound image was so hard to find the area in question

being my very first mammogram she decided to give me a core biopsy under ultrasound in order to confirm what this mass was.She said that she didn’t think it was anything sinister - and only the biopsy would confirm all was ok - she also said that this kind of biopsy was really common within our age range . didn’t stop me from bursting into tears though .

the actual biopsy was actually ok - didn’t feel a thing at the time . I was given a local anesthetic into the Breast - three core samples were taken painlessly - I also had a titanium marker placed within my breast so that any further mammograms / ultra sound / mri could pick up the area of the biopsy immediately. Whole thing took  about 20 I s x

i was given another mammogram directly after the marker to ensure it was in the right place - amerhestic  hadn’t worn off so felt nothing .

hodpital was really good and gave me a letter with A date and time for my results which was today (6 days later )

my breadts are very bruised after the biopsy and sore - but ok considering - paracetamol and   Rest sorted me out .

after an anxious week- I was told at the hospital everything was ok - had a 1cm lump ( which could not be felt from doctors ) and was probably a fibrosis lump that I’ve probably had since my 20 s but has only just been picked up x

I totally get your anxiety It’s to be expected - hope this has helped

  • Hi

Hope you are well. I know its been a long time since you have posted this. But I am going through the same. I had my memogram and biopsy and I am waiting for the results. I was just wondering what were your symptoms when you were refered to the breast clinic.
they were telling me that I have enlarged ducts and they want to make sure for any cancer growth.
    please anybody can help.
    take care

  • Hi Thanks for your reply. No You will be fine. I was too much scared as well as i have my left breast sore near my periods and when I went i was close to my date. But it was not that bad I was thinking. The scary part is the 2nd one if they take Biopsy and waiting time for the result is too much stressfull. You think all the negative things going to happen to you. I am going through that phase. But you will be fine during tests. For biospy they put the injection so you dont feel anything. So good luck. X
  • I hope your results are okay!

does it hurt when they give you anaesthetic cos even that is stressing me out. Why is the second one the scary part

  • Thanks. No its just a pinch even you wont come to know. They ask you to be relaxed. And the second part means waiting for the results. If they do core biopsy then it takes 10 days to come back. So all the thought process until you get the result.

  • Ah okay I thought you meant if I get the 2nd lump done too, my bad!
did you get a core biopsy or a fine needle biopsy

  • I've even bought numbing cream I'm so not ready for the needles! Haha

  • I can imagine cause we being woman goes into all details. And try to be fully ready. But trust me it will happen in minutes. My husband laughs at me the way i think and google the things. But its best not to look at google too much. Gives you more stress.

  • Is the process quick? Hahaha I know I think of the ins and outs of everything. Don't even know when my appointment is yet!

  • Yes its quick. You just have to wait little bit. But for a person like me I was too much stressed I didnt come to know about the time. The main thing was because of covid going on they didnt let my husband to go in with me. Omg that was the worst part.

  • Omg no way I was hoping on my boyfriend coming in with me won't be able to do all that alone!
