First Breast Biopsy— with guided ultrasound

Hi everyone.  I went for my annual mammogram two weeks ago.  I was told I needed to come back and have an ultrasound.  Now I need to go back in three weeks and have a biopsy guided by ultrasound in my left breast.  What they are seeing doesn’t look like a mass (although I’m confused as to what they are seeing).  I’m TOTALLY freaking out.  I’m 46 years old with no history of breast cancer.

A little background for you.  My mother just passed away from pancreatic cancer 5 weeks ago.  She was diagnosed on Dec 3rd and she passed at 77 years old on the 28th of December.  You can say that the C word is really making me anxious.  I’m trying to deal with the loss of my mom and now I I have this thrown at me.  Overwhelmed to say the least.  I know it might be nothing and I’m trying

not to get overly upset about this but it’s so hard.

Any experience, words of wisdom or advice would be appreciated.  Did I mention that getting a needle in my breast is scaring me a bit too?

Thanks guys for your help.

  • Hi,all I can say I had to have needle biopsy in my breast, quite a few taken from one breast at the same time,I didn't,t feel it so I am sure you will be ok,good luck and try to not worry if you can xx
  • Hi,I had this done about 3 weeks ago and the first needle deaden the skin then the second one deadens round the lump, you don’t feel them taken the biopsy at all just some pressure, believe me I have a terrible needle phobia and I was surprised that it wasn’t as bad as I thought, just try to relax when they are doing it as I got myself in a right state for nothing, good luck with your results I hope you get good news, xxx

  • Hi there - so sorry to hear about your Mum - they are so special x  I’ve been through the ultrasound biopsy within the last week - I’ve just turned 47 and was chosen at random for a trial mammogram / like yourself no history of Breast cancer in the family .

I was called back for a second mammogram and totally freaked out - I got In touch with my local hospital who confirmed I had an area of dense breast tissue which they wanted a closer look at .

At my appointment ( 5 days later ) I was given a second mammogram on my left Breast-  and Also required an ultrasound of my breast and lymph nodes - the doctor left the room to check my mammogram  and I could see a photo on the screen of the suspicious area which was circular in shape

She told me because of my age - call backs are really common as its difficult as out Breast’s are harder to read becsuse of the denseness - in fact my mammogram showed a mass really clearly - but the ultra sound image was so hard to find the area in question

being my very first mammogram she decided to give me a core biopsy under ultrasound in order to confirm what this mass was.She said that she didn’t think it was anything sinister - and only the biopsy would confirm all was ok - she also said that this kind of biopsy was really common within our age range . didn’t stop me from bursting into tears though .

the actual biopsy was actually ok - didn’t feel a thing at the time . I was given a local anesthetic into the Breast - three core samples were taken painlessly - I also had a titanium marker placed within my breast so that any further mammograms / ultra sound / mri could pick up the area of the biopsy immediately. Whole thing took  about 20 I s x

i was given another mammogram directly after the marker to ensure it was in the right place - amerhestic  hadn’t worn off so felt nothing .

hodpital was really good and gave me a letter with A date and time for my results which was today (6 days later )

my breadts are very bruised after the biopsy and sore - but ok considering - paracetamol and   Rest sorted me out .

after an anxious week- I was told at the hospital everything was ok - had a 1cm lump ( which could not be felt from doctors ) and was probably a fibrosis lump that I’ve probably had since my 20 s but has only just been picked up x

I totally get your anxiety It’s to be expected - hope this has helped

  • Hi, my mum had her first mammogram and she got called back for ultrasound and biopsy because they saw a spot on scan. Was yours a spot or lump they saw on the scan? I feel so worried and sick please tell me it will be fine.

  • Oh god. Your reply has given me peace of mind. I too have a terrible needle phobia. Thank you

  • You won't see any of the equipment, nor feel any of it accept some discomfort ... I had lots of biopsies taken with a guided ultrasound ... I think the worst of it was the emotional side

  • Hi

Hope you are well. I know its been a long time since you have posted this. But I am going through the same. I had my memogram and biopsy and I am waiting for the results. I was just wondering what were your symptoms when you were refered to the breast clinic.
they were telling me that I have enlarged ducts and they want to make sure for any cancer growth.
    please anybody can help.
    take care

  • Hi

I'm needing a biopsy done soon on Fibroadenoma. How was your biopsy? Did you get numbed beforehand or was it painless?

    hope everything is ok

  • Hi all,

Breast biopsy is totally painless..you dont see anything and the nurses take good care of you..you will.maybe have bruising for a little bit afterwards. paracetamol.and rest afterwards help

I had 16 took in one sitting and it wasnt any worse than having one...I found it quite interesting to watch on the screen.

I also had biopsies taken while in the mammogram machine..which was an experience.

    Hayley x
