Dull aching in right leg

Hiya,

My name is Emma, im 18 and am getting concerned about pains in my right leg.

As I can recall, I've been getting the pain for about a year or so but it isn't constant, it comes about every couple of months or so. I started to think this might not be quite right last week when I got the pain again (it's like a really heavy, dull ache which feels deep, in my bone rather than muscular and resembles an intense sort of growing pain). It came on in the evening and continued into the night, keeping me awake until the early hours of the morning. It doesn't seem to be affected with movement, if anything it is worse when I'm still or laying in bed. The bulk of the pain was in my thigh nearish my knee but it radiated down my leg then a bit into my pelvis.

I'm hoping to book an appointment with the GP soon but fear they may just overlook it as muscluar or no important as it's not constant. But I'm getting pretty worried about it as there is no obvious reason for this pain at all, I haven't injured my leg and surely I'm past the age of growing pains now, equally I've always known growing pains to affect both legs rather than one.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help with suggestions or their own personal expereicences, thank you!

Emma

    Hi Emu,

I know that you had tests for clots when you were at the hospital, but it sounds as if you need further investigation and, you're better finding out the reason for this now, rather than waiting until it does really become a serious problem.

It won't do any harm to have the opinion of another doctor. Hence, my advice to see your GP.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

Saw the doctor today, they say because the blood test for blood clot was clear they’ve let me go and told me to keep an eye on it, the painkillers they gave me make me sick. It’s so painful at night don’t know what to do.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what it may be?

    Thankyou :)

  • Hi Emu,

Most of us on this site either have cancer or are caring for someone with cancer. We are not doctors, so cannot really give you any suggestions as to what this might be.

I am glad that you saw your GP today. Did they give you any other painkillers which might not make you sick and,did they give you any idea of what else might be causing the pain?

Don't hesitate to go back to your GP if the pain persists., as you shouldn't be having this sort of trouble at your age.

It might be worth phoning the nurses on this site to ask them for advice. Their number is 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

i have been having the same problem for just over a week now, I had an ingrown toe nail which has now healed but it caused a dull pain in my right leg and the pain is still there.

I went to the docs for my toe and they gave me antibiotics but my leg is still no better it’s like pain in my calf but it feels a deep pain.

anyone got any ideas about this ?

    thanks

    Hi am,

It sounds as if the antibiotics have healed your ingrown toenail, but the piece of nail that caused the trouble is still digging in. It may start up again when you finish taking the antibiotics.

The only permanent solution to this is to see a HCPC registered podiatrist, who can remove the offending piece of nail. The pain should then settle.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi jolamine

Thanks for your reply. My nail seems to be fine now there isn’t any pain around it - I have been to the pharmacist today and she suspected it may be a trapped nerve in my leg and said it has nothing to do with my ingrown toe nail.

i did go to the gym a few days before I started getting the pain and I was on the treadmill sprinting but I only have pain in one leg so I’m still unsure if this is a trapped nerve?

i have had the pain for just over a week now and isn’t any better , pharmacist gave me paracetamol and ibrufen - told me to go walk in centre if not better within 1-2 weeks.

Does it sound like a trapped nerve ? The pain is in much calf and it feels like a growing pain but I’m 21 so sure it’s not that.

    thanks

  • I'm 28 and keep waking up with excurating pain in my right leg from calf through knee to thigh to point I'm nearly in tears and have to get up and take several pain medications, I have fibromyalgia but it is not that. This feels like it's in the bone a throbbing type "growing pain" I need to get into my gp as I have other issues ongoing such as weightloss due to problems with my bowels but have noticed a few small lumps 1 on each leg and 1 near my collar bone I'm just worried what they will say and it's so hard to get an appointment

    Hi Gemma,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. There is no point in prevaricating because you fear the outcome. They are obviousy worrying you, so the sooner you make that appointment with your GP the better.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

  • Hi Jolamine,

I'm 19 years old, last night I was in so much pain I was crying at what felt like growing pains, surely I'm grown out of that now? The pain was on my right thigh and started going all the way up my hand and arm, is this normal? I eventually fell asleep after hugging my leg to try and stop the pain and this morning I woke up to the same feeling but on the left side of my body! Iv contacted my GP who don't have any appointments until the next few weeks.

Any advice at all as I'm really worried?

    xx

    Hi Kiko,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about the pains that you are having. I am not a doctor, merely another cancer warrior, so I cannot tell you what is causing these pains, but it doesn't seem right for someone of your age to be suffering like this. You have done the right thing by making an appointment with your GP, even if you have to wait for a few weeks to see someone.

If your pain gets any more severe you could always present yourself at the A & E department of your local hospital. This might get the ball rolling a little quicker for you. Before your appointment, try to write down as much detail about these episodes as possible giving dates of when they started, how long they last, etc.

I do hope that you get to the bottom of this soon. Do please keep in touch and let us now how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
