Terrified of possible tonsil cancer

Hi All

I have recently been fast tracked to ENT department as possible cancer patient. I went to the docs on Monday with an enlarged right tonsil. I don't have any pain nor other symptoms of tonsil cancer. The doc said it is very abnormal and has a small growth on it. I don't know how long it's been this way as I have had no pain. I have my appointment in 7 days but this waiting game is horrible and the only thing you can think of is the worst. The doc also checked my neck for any swelling or lumps and they said that there is nothing there which is a good sign. Being told it's possibly cancer I fail to find any good signs what so ever. I guess I am on here as I don't know what to expect. I wasn't given any info on this and Google everything only hightens my fears. I can't talk to my wife as she crys as soon as she looks at me.

Amy advice would be grateful

  • Hi single mom- it was about 3cms long and 2 cms deep at its biggest.

  • hi

I was reading your story Chris and mine is very similar, went to doc with sore throat that had white patch on tonsils. He said doesn’t look normal of tonsillitis. I was given antibiotics for 10 days and told to go back if things did not improve. Things have stayed the same my tonsils on one side is enlarged with white patch still there. I was told if this was the case I would have to go to ENT for further investigation. I haven’t went back to doctors as I am terrified it’s cancer.

  • Hi Don

Frightening times for sure but remember that there are many causes of your symptoms. The main priority for you is to get a diagnosis so make that trip and then embark on your treatment plan, whatever that may be. I went to ENT and straight away was told it was Cancer confirmed by biopsy a week later. I am now 8 weeks post treatment and although the path is not an easy one it would have been a disaster if i had ignored it.  Very best of luck.

  • Hi Ronco,

Please could you tell me what your symptoms were? Did you have any pain? My 6 year old daughter has an urgent referral to ENT for one very enlarged tonsil (painless) which I noticed 3 weeks ago - not sure how long she's actually had it for though. A ten day course of antibiotics have had no effect at all. I'm really concerned. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Lisa

I'm in the same position, my five year old daughter is going to ent tomorrow with one enlarged tonsil with a very strange lump on it, looks like a large fleshy skin tag. I'm worried about it but the gp didn't seem that bothered I had to push him to refer her.

  • I also have similar symptoms might go to get it checked as I have really big tonsils so it is hard to tell if they are swollen because they always are, I have a tiny yellow spot on the right tonsil but no sore throat or fever I also have had a small lump on the left side of my neck which feels deep under the skin. Did go too get this checked but got a very bad doctor who spent 10 seconds feeling the lump and said it's probably a lymph node and should go away in a month or 2 and this was on the 14th February so might go back to get checked

  • Hi Lisa

Do you mind my asking the outcome of your daughter's appointment? We are just waiting for a referral appointment with an oncologist for my son. His symptoms sound identical.

  • We went to ent and the first consultation said it was a wart and not on her tonsil at all (which was nonsense) , the nurse took me aside after and said would I like another opinion, which I did, so the second consultant thought it was cystic or extra tonsillar growth and its defiently on her tonsil, we've to go back at the end of this month and discuss about getting it removed.

It's not got bigger or smaller and still doesn't bother her so I don't think it's anything sinister.
