Pain after smear

I had a smear test yesterday and was told I thrush but have been having lots if pain down below before and after the smear does this mean something is wrong? I am really as I lost my dad to cancer in 1979 and my mum in 2014 - mum had bladder cancer. What are the chances me getting it too?

    Hi Sharon,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am sorry to hear about the pain you have had since your smear. If you have thrush, this may be the reason why you are still sore. I presume that you have been given some medication to  get rid of this?

I am so sorry to hear about  the loss of both your parents to cancer. Without doing some genetic tests it is impossible to tell whether there is any likelihood of you getting bladder cancer like your Mum. Have you discussed this with your GP? S/he will be in the best place to answer this question.

I lost my Mum to secondary breast cancer 20 years ago and I have had 2 bouts of primary breast cancer, the first diagnosed 7 years ago and the second the following year.

How long are you likely to have to wait before you get the results of your smear test? I am sure that if there was anything to make the doctor taking your smear suspicious, that she would have referred you for further tests.

If your pain doesn't settle within the next few days or it gets worse, contact your GP and see what s/he suggests.

Please let us know how you get on. There is always someone here for you whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Sharon.

I had a smear test done about 1 week ago and was sore for about 3 days afterwards. My tests results came back perfectly fine and when I asked the nurse, she said it's normal for some people to get sore as some people are more sensitive than others. I also lightly bled for an hour or 2 after having it done. I'm sure you'll be ok. Thrush is immensely common so maybe that's why your a little extra sore. X

  • Hi honey, try not to worry about your smear.

But if cancer runs in the family ask your doctor if you can be tested for lynch syndrome.
