MRI Guided Breast Biopsy

I've just been told that I need an MRI Guided Breast Biopsy,   my local hospital doesn't do these,  but my consultant is struggling to find somewhere than can do it.

Does anyone know of any hospitals that do this procedure?   Has anyone had this done?   I don't mind travelling anywhere in the UK.

I'd welcome any information please,  thanks.

  • Hi and welcome to Cancer Chat, anneluned.

I wanted to just stop by quickly to suggest giving our helpline a call, as it's open till 5pm today: 0808 800 4040. Our cancer nurses will be back on Monday at 9am if you aren't able to call now. You can also post in our Ask the nurses section of the forum but won't receive a reply till next week.

Hopefully, another Cancer Chat member who has experience of the biopsy type you mention will be along soon to reply to your post.

    With best wishes,

    Helen

    Hi,

I think that the normal test is an Ultrasound guided  biopsy. i have had 5 or 6 biopsies in the past 7 years and all have been Ultrasound led. I presume that your doctor has told you why you need an MRI guided breast biopsy?

Surely your consultant has contacts for this? I hope that you manage to find someone who can carry this out..

I am sorry that I cannot give you an answer to your question. Helen has already suggested that you contact the nurses on this site. They have the medical knowledge to adise you where you might be able to get this procedure carried out. They are very helpful and it is well worth having a chat with them.

Please keep us posted and let us know how you get on. Remember that there is always someone here to talk to if you want to chat.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

I know MRI guided biopsies are at a hospital in North London and also a hospital in Bristol but I'm not sure what the referral criteria would be to have one... worth asking your GP

    Hi HamBag,

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for this information. Ann's post was in July 2017, so I hope that she has already had her biopsy and treatment if needed. I am sure that this will be helpful for others, even if Ann has no need of this now.

I haven't heard anything from her since, but hope that she is doing well. If you're still looking in on this community Ann, it would be good to hear how you are getting on.

Can I ask HamBag, do you have cancer yourself, or are you caring for someone with it?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Waiting for the reply as why this test is requested ,when very few expertise in this field.

  • Hi

I had an MRI guided biopsy done in a hospital Leicester in 2017,

I had an MRI in my local hospital after finding cancer in my left breast, the MRI showed up a very small area in my right breast and I was called back for a biopsy under ultrasound.   They couldn’t find the area under ultrasound, and I was told that I would have to have an MRI guided biopsy.  At the time there was nowhere in Wales that did this procedure and, my surgeon struggled to find somewhere in the UK that could do the procedure quickly, so after a lot of googling and stress I contacted the breast care nurse, who informed me that I could have the procedure done there privately that same week.   It was all organised with my own breast care nurse and surgeon.   While I was having the MRI guided biopsy,  a marker was inserted under the skin so that the surgeon could locate the area.  The lump in my left breast was 8cm and I had to have a mastectomy but the area in my right breast was only 2mm,  this was removed and I can hardly see the scar.   All the other procedures were done on the NHS which was exceptional.

I hope that the reason for you needing the guided biopsy is because like me, what they have found is so small.

All the best with your treatment.

    Ann

  • Glad I was able to help,   I remember feeling as you do,  I just wanted the cancer out and didn't want to wait.

I'm sure it will all be OK in the end,  I'm now 5 years down the line and feeling fine,  but it is a journey.

Keep positive and take whatever help you can.
