Tongue Biopsy. Waiting on results

Hello All,

It was last wednesday that I went to the oral surgeon to have a biopsy done on my tongue where I have some white patches/spots on the top and forward section of my tongue.  I am only 30 years old, but having drank and smoked quite a bit for the past 10 years, I am quite concerned to say the least given the increased chances that smokers and drinkers have of getting oral cancer.

The white patches appear to be the only symptom I have.  There is nothing else and no pain at all. I have a follow up appointment on the 2nd of August to go over my biopsy results.  Quite a long time to wait really to find out whether or not you have cancer.  I was wondering about people's experiences whether they were diagnosed with cancer or not.   Do people who get diagnosed with cancer receive their results early?  Just kind of wondering in the back of my head that if I don't hear anything before my appointment that it is likely to be a sign of good news.

Also if you have/had any bad habits like I do, did you give them up before you got your biopsy resuits?  I've already ditched the cigarrettes even before my biopsy.  Giving up the drink has been even harder but I stopped drinking so much after my biopsy.  Its really hard giving these things up especially with a rather stressful job.  Not really sure what to do tomorrow as I have a tradition with people from my workplace to go have a pint or two at lunchtime on Fridays.  Naturally with the uncertainty regarding my health, I am inclined to not go or just have a coke.  I will probably get lots of awkward questions as of to why I'm not drinking.  Not sure whether to lie or just tell them what's going on.  At the moment, since I don't know anything, I don't want others to worry about me.  Did you wait to tell anyone you know about even having the biopsy until you knew what the results were?

Many Thanks

  • Hiya Clara and Stokemale. No soreness at all today. It is almost as if yesterday didn't happen. Very odd. Drinking coffee, eating what I want, no pain WHATSOEVER from tongue. It is now exactly as it was when this all started. Worrying me slightly because I was inwardly bracing for the natural pain of a wound and stitches but nothing at all.

I think my follow up appointment has been auto generated for Sep 10th as had text today confirming it. On holidays then though so asked for different date.

Will keep you updated either way as I do think it's important people see the good news as well as the bad especially on forums like this. Hopefully mine will be good.

  • Dear Clara.  hello  how are you keeping I havent been on the form for so long...so much been going on regarding my sister..I see you have said that you may need more biops...I am sorry to read this clara...I have always thought about you wondering how you have been getting on..but you just assume the worsed is passing and we all get on with staying strong and getting over this dammed illness..I pray you are well. • Hi all,

I forgot to post following my appointment the other Friday as I flew out to Turkey for 2 weeks that night, currently still there but just lounging around & thought it'd be good time to catch up.

Saw consultant for my 6 week check following op. & he was really happy with how wound healing, I was a bit taken shocked when he told me he would see how things develop over next 3 months then get me booked in for another op! I kind of expected that as cells had progressed into healthy tissue something would happen 1 day but not so soon. He did kind of joke with me that they wouldn't be so brutal next time to lighten the mood which I suppose is a good thing, so 3 month wait then see what happens, take care, catch you all soon.

  • Hi Stokemale,

Many thanks for your update. This sounds like good news to get just before you went off on holiday. I hope that you are enjoying Turkey and having a nice relaxing time.

I can understand your concern about having to return in 3 months and possibly having further surgery then. Hopefully all will still be good and there will be no need for surgery.

In the meantime, do your best to forget all about this and live for each day. Don't dwell on what might happen, which is something you can't control. Instead enjoy life and family time.

Don't forget to update us when you have your review.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Just a quick update about my lesion. It swelled up again last week and became sore again just like it first did, but has now calmed down again.

I had received an appointment at the Maxo Facial on Sept 24 for an appointment to discuss the results, and have been phoning the GP regularly for any results, with no joy. 6 weeks now since the biopsy so I am confident its nothing major, no news is good news and all you know,  but today I received ANOTHER  appointment letter for Max/Fac in another hospital so now I'm a bit confused.

I think I'll give the hospital  a ring next week.

Thanks for edit Jenna. ,Didnt realise you couldnt name hospitals.

  •

    Hi Klopptastic,

I agree with you. It's time to phone the hospital and see what's happening and why you have 2 different appointments.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi expat,

just wanted to know that all is fine with you and what happens to the pitch which was diagnosed as leukoplakia and have you had it removed or it vanished own it's own if it had vanished then how long it took to be venished thanks .

  • Hi

Within 2 weeks of the biopsy I was in for surgery as diagnosed with severe dysplasia, took bit more of my tongue than expected but it healed well with no adverse effects. They took samples of the tissue removed & I was told they hadn't removed a clear margin of tissue so I expect a return one day, I have had a few checks in the meantime off my own back but they seem to be happy with no concerns, I have my next check up 5th Jan as a I had an ulcer on the tongue for 5 weeks which seems to have cleared up but I now have another small white patch on the scar tissue, probably nothing but I prefer piece of mind, so 2 years post surgery all is good, I try to put it all to the back of my mind but expect a return 1 day!
