Potential skin cancer - awaiting diagnosis

Hi All,

I am new to the site and I apologise in advance for this long post.........I recently went to my GP 2 Thursday's and during the appointment I mentioned that I had 2 moles on my lower back and asked if she could have a quick look to make sure they were nothing to worry about.  She referred me to my local hospital to have them photographed the following day.  At the hospital I was told they would be reviewed within 48 hours by a Dermatologist who would review the pictures and basically triage them to decide how fast I would need to be seen.  He also said that if it was something really bad I would receive a call, not a letter.

I never received a call thank goodness but I did receive an appointment through the post last Tuesday to go to a different hospital to see a Dermatologist this coming Thursday - so it will be 2 weeks from my original appointment with my GP to seeing a Dermatologist.  On the hospital website it says the 'dermatologists view the digitial images and fast-track anyone with suspected skin cancer'.  Two weeks seems fast to me but I'm not sure if it is fast in this process.  I called the number on the letter and asked if I had been fast tracked or if it was just routine, the call handler put me on hold for ages then came back and said she was only a call handler and wasn't medically trained to answer that question.  She advised me to speak to my GP who weren't much help either and just advised me to go to the appointment this Thursday?

Would this be classed as fast tracked or am I worrying over nothing?  What can I expect to happen with the Dermatologist - e.g if they are concerned about the moles will they do it there and then or will I need to wait again for another appointment for that?

Can someone shed any light - I am afraid to google the answers as that my freak me out even more.

Thanksxxx

  • Thats great that you are healing well.  Im also pleased your results are also back...have they given you any indication of how soon you are likely to hear back from the consultant?

I tried to get an earlier appoinment but had no luck so it will be Wednesday the finally get removed....this waiting is torture!  Although i absolutely agree with you and Helen it has definitely helped having you both to chat to :-)

  • Hello to both of you,

I received a call today from a specialist nurse, I have to go to hospital next Thursday. I haven't been informed of the diagnosis, all I know is I am going to need a further procedure and that the initial biopsy took all the cancer away. Sorry this news is brief and to the point, I am still processing the information myself.

    Hope you are both ok

    Helen

  • Hi Helen,

Im sorry to hear that. It will probably take a while for it to sink in.  Big hugs to you and you know where we are if you need to chat xx

  • Hi Helen,

Please keep us posted. Sending you hugs and positive thinking. I imagine is hard to hear your mole wasn't a good one, but there is one piece of good news in your message though, and that is the cancer was removed with the biopsy.

If you need to chat, we're here.

    Rafael

  • Hi Mrs C and Rafael,

Thank you very much for your kind messages. It is a real comfort to know that I have the both of you to chat to. I am fine and relieved that the cancer was all taken at the time of biopsy. I am feeling positive about my appointment to discuss a further procedure. I will of course keep you both updated.

I hope you are both doing well too, I am here too to support you both.

    Chat soon

    Helen

  • Just wishing you both a positive and sunny start of the week.

  • You too Rafael.  Have you heard anything about your results?

    How are you doing Helen?

  • Hi,

Thanks Rafael that's so kind, hope you have a positive week too.

Mrs C- I am good thanks, luckily I have a super busy week this week to keep me occupied, not that I am too worried. I saw my GP yesterday with my daughter, I asked the nurse-Karen wether I should get my daughter seen sooner with her mole. My GP had a look and he said October will be fine, but if there are any changes to the mole, we have to make an appointment to see him and he will sort an earlier appointment, which is reassuring news.

I have also looked at travel insurance yesterday  for our holiday next month, the quote declaring Melanoma was five times the price that I normally pay! One 'helpful' colleague at work said that I didn't have melanoma as all the cancer has gone! I wasn't impressed with that comment, as the travel insurance asks wether diagnosis is with in the last 2 years. I know I need another procedure, I have had family members with different cancers, so I know you don't get the all clear until you have had your final treatment/procedures and that the results come back as clear.

I hope you both get some results soon, please keep me updated, I will update again on Thursday when I have seen Karen-my nurse.

    Helen :)

  • Hi Helen and MrsC,

The consultant just called me to let me know that the results found some atypical cells but they are not cancerous. So I'm discharged and there are no further actions.

I guess I will keep monitoring my moles moving forward and make sure I get anything checked asap if they change shape or colour.

I am very relieved! I cannot thank you both enough for the support in the past weeks. It has been essential for me to be able to talk to you.

I will continue following this thread because I want to know how both of you are doing and I want you to know that I am still here to talk.

Helen, I hope you get to enjoy your holidays, and I am happy to hear the doctor will fast track your daughter if needed. Hopefully, her mole is just atypical like mine.

    Keep me posted! :)
