Pea size lump in my tongue

I am 65 and I found a pea size lump in my tongue 2 weeks ago. I went to my GP who was unable to tell me what it was. She referred me to the Head and Neck Maxillofacial department at our local hospital and said I would be seen within the two week wait. I had been freaking out until last night when I was feeling my tongue and squeezing it a little with my teeth and it oozed some pus.
It is not Painful and hasn't been either before this.
My appointment was today.
The consultant asked me lots of questions about my general health and wellbeing, which is good, but I have been very lethargic the last few months and have not wanted to do anything much at all.
The consultant looked all around my mouth and felt the lump, she tried to squeeze it but nothing oozed out of it. She felt all around my neck, shoulders, and face and said she thinks it maybe a cyst, but would like to completely remove the lump. She said this would be arranged very quickly as she would keep me on the urgent two week appointment list.
She told me to try not to worry. I was told they would completely remove it by cutting it out and then stitching it back up, under local anesthetic, and that I would be sore for a few days and on a liquid diet!
Although I was told not to worry, I am really scared of the procedure as well as the outcome.
I am going on a cruise on the 24th June and am wondering if I will be ok to go.
I am going with a friend who recently lost her husband and it's also only the second holiday I have had since losing my hubby 12.5 years ago.
Any advice would be very welcome!

  • Hi Annieloe, What a pity that you couldn't get your results before you went on your cruise. this must have put a bit of a damper on your holiday. Still, it's great to hear that your lump turned out to be benign in the end. I hope that you are doing well now. Kind regards, Jolamine xx

    HI Milliemopotops,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that you've joined. Are you going to manage surgery before you go away on holiday or do you have to wait until you return?

I am glad to hear that you are doing your best to stay positive and, I hope that it all turns out well for you too.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Natalie I hope you don’t mind me messaging you but I read you posted somewhere else that you only had a lump removed from your tongue and got the all clear but then they found cancer in your lymph nodes? That’s exactly what I’m worried about happening to me as I didn’t have any lymph nodes removed and checked for cancer cells can I ask how they found it and how you are doing now? Hope your well

  • Hi April

    im well thank you

When I was diagnosed from my tongue I had scans which didn’t show any cancer in the lymph nodes so just a small operation, all clear just had to go back for check ups. At the 2nd check up I had been having some pain in my neck which I just assumed was muscle pain as couldn’t feel any lumps but the consultant felt a small lump deep in my neck which was then biopsied then confirmed as spread. They removed all the lymph nodes and 4 were positive

but that was almost 3 years ago and apart from the side effects from radio and chemotherapy I’m doing well. All scans since have been clear

I guess the fear is always there but the doctors are amazing and know what they are looking for so as long as you go to your follow up checks if anything is wrong they will find it

    hope you are well

  • Thank you so much for the reply it’s so nice of you to still be active on here after 3 years so pleased it’s been that long since you have been all clear! X

  • Hello Just posting  hereabout a lump I am concerned about  that I haven't acted on in 9 months as I taught it was just a skin tag its on the side of tougue more than half back it has started to get bigger but was painless up until now. Its not bleeding or no discharge but has got bigger in size I am really scared now but I guess my only option is to just make appointment and go with what the doctor says to do I am very nervous type of person when it comes to needles so I do know how this will work out if I decided to have it removed can I please get reassured as to how to go ahead with this.. Many thanks I do smoke by the way.

  • Hi yes I would just try to get a doctors appointment ASAP and see what they say, sometimes the dentist is better for mouth lumps so depending on what the doctor says I would get a second opinion from the dentist too as that’s what I did and it all happened really quickly.

Unfortunately the biopsy isn’t very nice and quite uncomfortable they can numb it though and it is over quickly. I know how hard it is not to worry but you have to try not to until you get your appointment at least, a lump doesn’t always mean it will be cancer.

Good luck and if you want to carry on chatting I’m here.

  • Thank you for reply April30. Coincidence that you mentioned a denist as I had a bad experience with a tooth extraction that cause me to get a dry socket a very painful thing to get but I overcame it with being hospitlaized and  was given Very strong pain relief. The dentist did see the nudule Or lump and did make an appointment for me with ENT but due Covid it had been put off then a nurse rang one. Day about 2months  ago back and offer me a appointment but it wasn't in my local  hospital and I wasn't willing to travel far on my own if i was kept so I put it off but now it's got a little bigger and is just a nuisance it feels. Solid and like. As if it was. A. Cyst but. I cannot. Tell for sure if its a cyst or tumor but I cannot leave It on the long finger any longer. I will ring my doctor to see will he refer me. To ENT again and just go with it. A few. Things I wanted. To ask was if they take. The. Growth away does. It affect your speech. Coming back even after The Stitches dissolve i Am Only 31 and dont wanna Be  out of my job for to long Cos. I am only in a New. Job abouth 2months. And don't want to have to take sick leave. Also are

. You. In pain right after the local anesthetic wears off?
