Kidney cyst

Hi after months of hassling my doctor with resistant blood pressure he finally sent me for an ultrasound. During the ultra sound they discovered a cyst 5.8 x 5.8 x 5.8cm. I recently went to see a urologist who advised I need a CT scan on both kidneys and a Thorax CT with contrast. I'm worried as to why I need  Thorax Ct?

I've had a few blood tests and urine test done by my doctor as is required when taking blood pressure medication. Theyve always come back as normal.

Unfortunately I have convinced myself I have cancer and the wait for the CT is killing me!

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

  • Hi Ishyde

I could say that i have such similar experience.

As far as i know, Ultrasound is pretty inaccurate for diagnosing tumor malignancy/benignity so I supposed that a contrast CT scan was suggested in order to clear things up for a more proper diagnosis

    .

Also I could say that you shouldnt worry about the inclusion of Thorax CT-scan as I think it is a more standard procedure for kidney tumors regardless of whether they are cancerous or not.

Angiomyolipoma, the most common type of benign (non-cancerous) kidney tumor is often associated with a genetic condition known as Tuberous Scelorisis, specially in women. Such type of benign tumors would also cause fatty lesions and cysts on liver and lungs, so a Thorax Ct-Scan could also help rule out  such possibilities.

  • My mother has Angiomyolipoma so I'm praying I've inherited it from her. I just self diagnose and come up with all sorts of things.
  • Hi ,I myself have a kidney cyst although I'm only at the stage where I've had 1 c.t scan and 2 ultra sound scan at the uss ,the urologist who conducted my ultra sound scan took picture and measured it . I didn't find out what size it is . But he said I need to come back for a contrast c.t scan . Now I'm not one to dawn on things unknown but like you I have been very worried  it could be cancer .I also have Gull stones which is absolute agony ..    hope you get good news at your results .I think that as being human and value your life it's very easy to get worried it's something it's not . I've told myself not to worry until I get the results .harder said than done ... so I know where your coming from with the worry side of things .
