Diagnosing base of tongue cancer: pain in throat

Hi there

Was hoping to hear from anyone who had base of tongue cancer with pain in throat as the primary symptom and had trouble being diagnosed (only 30% of people present with a sore throat I've read).

I have had a pain on the left side down my throat since Nov 16. Sometimes it's like a sharp pinch sometimes like a throbbing. More recently my left back teeth and gums ache and my left tongue hurts when eating. Sometimes pain swallowing. Left neck nodes slightly swollen but not hard or unmovable.

Scope showed swollen left lingual tonsil. Pet / ct half body showed nothing

Neck ultrasound and Fna showed a couple of reactive lymph nodes but shape was not deemed concerning and needle aspiration was negative.

Left sided lingual and palatine tonsil biopsy negative. Unfortunately biopsies were not taken from other locations of oropharynx. Thought that was the end of it. Then all my symptoms came back. Light throbbing pain on left of neck too. ENT keeps saying it's just post tonsillectomy but the pain is totally different and it's just getting worse.

  • hi

    same here

have you seen any doc or not

  • Apologies for the late replies, everyone.

Some updates since the last time.

I got a CT scan done in September 2019. Results came back 10 weeks later with no answers.

I got an  MRI done in February 2020. Results came back with no answers either.

So to round up at that point, I had 5 endoscopies, 1 CT and 1 MRI. None of which, had any answers.

June 2020, I was back for another endoscopy but again, nothing was found. As frustrating as this is, it is still kind of reassuring that nothing sinsiter was obvious. So they took blood for the first time in 18 months to see if they can look into it further.

I am now waiting on an appointment to get an ultrasound done. So I will keep you posted if anything changes.

They discussed possibly removing tonsils if it turns out to be a tonsils issue, but they think that might make things worse, especially if it turns out to be nothing to do with tonsils. They are looking into a possibilty of an issue with my saliva gland, which I think might be a possibility.

It's all guessing games still. And this is very frustrating, considering we are now 18 montjs down the line with 0 answers.

  • Hi Barry , how are you doing now? I hope all turned out ok for you .
I'm going through  the exact same situation and it's honestly scaring me to the max. I'm getting no where fast .

  • Hi there. The ultrasound showed nothing at all. Therefore, they weren't able to do any biopsies.

As frustrating as all of this has been, I am still relieved that nothing sinister has been found. But I am still sitting where I was in December 2018. Not knowing what is causing this. I am still at square one.

The ultrasound doctor said I would be contacted again by the doctor that sent me, but still not heard anything yet. I need to see what can be done next. If I don't hear anything in the next 3 to 4 weeks, I will need to contact them again. It always seems to be me doing the running around trying to arrange the next steps. That is very worrying.

The best thing you can do (and the best thing I done) is just not read about or search anything on the internet. I found that hard for the first 6 months. But all the results I found kept giving me panic attacks. I didn't read anything and it keeps me more at ease. The only thing I really read now is this thread to update people in the same situation.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi Barry

did you get to the bottom of your symptoms as I've been following as I have similar symptoms. Did have feelings of something in throat and now I just get pain most of the time on right side but not when swallowing. Bloods came back clear and now being referred to ent.

  • Hi there. Still no update since my last post. I got a letter from the doctor who has been overseeing my issue a few months ago.

She said she was going to arrange a check up with me in a few months (which is round about now). So I await an appointment to speak to her to see what to do next.

My condition is still the same. Enlarged tonsil at the right hand side since December 2018. Still the feeling of something stuck and all the other symptons the exact same for almost 2 years now.

  • It could be Glossopharyngeal neuralgia

  • Hi I have this same issue, pain soreness under the left side of my tongue and sore throat at the back of the tongue, I've suffered for years, last year I had major tonsil stone all down the back of my throat making me feel seriously ill, my septum was deviated, now it's none existent so I have constant throat and sinus and mouth issues, ent said last year they will fit a button in my nose for my septum to device my nasal passage so I don't have to delete with giant mucus(bogies) numerous times a day, this was a year ago and I've heard nothing since. I'm still dealing with a sore mouth tongue throat and nothing been done. I don't think it's cancer it will be  related to sinuses or ears or even anxiety the way you hold your jaw when your stressed causing you to bite your tongue repeatedly building up the soreness. There just seems to be no treatment for ENT these days and the discomfort and illness it makes you feel needs addressing. Quickly for a better standard of living x hope you get some answers cos I'm years in, still suffering and had no help x

  • Are you still waiting? I'm 3 years waiting for help now x

  • Hi Barry I have exavtky the same symptoms as you I feel so depressed my results from the camera down the throat came back clear but the right side of my throat feels so sore, inc inside of the right side of the mouth.

any update on your diagnosis will be greatly appreciated
