terrified waiting for test found large breast lump

Im sitting here just in a dreadful terrified state, thinking what about my kids and my partner,,its my daughters wedding in two days and I just found out I need an urgent mammagram etc I found a large lump saw the GP and her face said it all the lump is big and obvious and I sort of hoped she would say 'lump what lump' but she went right to it and said it was large and needed seeing urgently.

Im scared stiff and its going to be weeks really before I know how bad this is..OH god how can I get through the next few weeks and the wedding acting normal I cant tell the kids certainly not my daughters and ruin the wedding but I have to pull myslef through it all and do my job and look like it is such a happy time when truth is I just keep crying and wanting to screem and run!!!!

what the hell do I do

    Hi Lisa,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the worry that they are causing you. First of all, I want to reassure you that the way you are feeling is perfectly normal. We all tend to get over emotional  and our imaginations lead us to dark places at times. Fortunately, this seldom occurs.

I have a history of breast cancer in the family, having lost my mum and several other family members to cancer. I felt like you at first and was terified for my two teenage children. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years. Fortunately, ths is one of the most treatable forms of cancer nowaays. Since  my diagnosis, I have seen my children leave school, go to university, graduate, find gainful employment, marry and have children of their own. I still live a busy and fulfilled life.

Not all lumps are cancerous. Many are benign cysts or fibrous changes. The thought of cancer fills us all with dread, but we just have to deal with it when we're told that's what we've got. Believe it or not, it is easier to cope with knowing, irrespective of the outcome, instead of being in limbo with the unknown. You will usually be seen within 2 weeks from the date of referral, although this can take a little longer in some areas due to Covid.

You will possibly receive a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy when you attend and then you are likely to have another 1-2 weeks wait for the results. I do hope that all turns out well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for replying to such an old post.

I am in Scotland and was told today I'm on a 6 week wait list but it's marked as urgent and to talk to my gp if I had any issues. I have a blood test tomorrow so will see if I can do anything about that wait. However maybe it's a sign breast clinic didn't think it was as urgent as my gp.

I will let you know how I get on thanks for the encouraging words

    xx

    Hi Lisa,

I am surprised that your waiting time is 6 weeks in Scotland. Most clinics are fulfilling the 2 week wait for urgent referrals now. It sounds as if you've already phoned the hospital to get this information. It might still be worth phoning them again to let them know that you will accept any cancellation at short notiice. Sometimes this works and at others it doesn't, but it's worth a shot.

I hope that all goes well with your blood test today.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello

I just joined this chat, I found a lump/ mass been referred to breast clinic. My lump is quite big and my boobs are very small.,it's soft and is movable.

I need to stop googling things!!!!

  • Can I ask how they found it if it didn't show up on the tests?

  • Hi ShonaW,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your symptoms. You are doing the right thing in getting this tested. It is good news that your lump is soft and moveable, as it is usually the firmer ones that prove to be problematic. Do stop consulting 'Dr Google'. We always advise people not to do so at this stage. All it will serve to do is to scare you further, as much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the most spectacular cases.

It is impossible to get any useful information that is pertinant to you, until you know exactly what type and grade of cancer you have or whether you are still all clear. You will find that not all breast lumps are cancerous. Many are benign cysts, fibrous, or hormanal changes. It is also a fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

I hope that you get your appointment through soon and that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
