Been referred to Breast Clinic and freaking out...

Hi all,

I'm sure there are lots of messages like this one, but I thought I'd post a message anyway as it seems like a good place to vent my worry without unnecessarily alarming other people in my life!

I went to see my GP yesterday as my right breast has been feeling a bit tender lately. My breasts are quite naturally lumpy but recently it's felt like there is an area of my breast which is more solid than the rest. I don't know why, but I kind of expected the GP to say it was nothing and for me to carry on with the rest of my day as usual. Instead as soon as I mentioned slight pain in my right breast her general demeanour went from bright and breezy to serious and concerned. She asked me if I had any family history of breast cancer, and I told her my grandmother had it (she passed away from breast and lung cancer aged 68). I also remembered after my appointment that my mother's cousin had it, although my mum and aunt are fine (at least so far). She examined my breast, and although I hadn't actually mentioned finding any lumps she immediately found the place that I had identified myself. She said she wasn't sure if it was a lump, or just a nodule as my breasts are quite nodular, but she would refer me to a breast clinic for screening. She would recommend all available tests. She said she thought they would want to see me "very quickly". So as you can imagine I left the GP surgery alarmed. I also got a call from the hospital the same day (yesterday) to arrange an appointment - which also alarmed me as I figured they had prioritised me because they suspected it was cancer.

The appointment is for a week on monday. I'm not sure if I can wait that long because psychologically I'm already finding it very tough.

This year is a very big one for me as I'm getting married in three months. The wedding is abroad, everything's already organised, many people have booked their flights and accommodation. Me and my fiance are planning our life together. I can't imagine everything being disrupted by a breast cancer diagnosis.

More than that, I can't imagine trying to face breast cancer if that is the diagnosis. The GP said I should try not to worry, and that most cases are benign, but I am upset that I was referred so quickly.

I tried to talk to my Mum about it, especially as my stepdad is a retired doctor, but both of them immediately dismissed it by saying if I have any pain the likelihood is that it's not anything serious. My boyfriend is being very understanding, and saying that if it's serious we can postpone the wedding, we'll do whatever it takes. But I already have a lot going on in my life and I'm struggling to imagine the possibility, however unlikely, of taking breast cancer on as well.

How do people cope with this? I don't want to mention it to friends as I don't have a diagnosis of anything yet. But at the same time I find it hard to socialise etc as normal with this dread hanging over me.

  • Is it worth taking my own dressing gown ,......silly question I know x

  • I have an appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow after finding a large solid immobile painless lump. I've convinced myself it's cancer even though I know there are other possibilities. I have a two month old baby boy and my heart is breaking at the thought of having to battle cancer during what should be our happiest time. This thread has been really helpful in terms of what to expect tomorrow. In a weird way I'm looking forward to it as at least it will be the start of getting some answers. Good luck to everyone in the same situation, I had no idea referrals to the breast clinic were so common.

  • If it makes you feel even the littlest bit more hopeful. I though my lump was hard and immobile but was told last week it actually was very mobile by the consultant. I was prepared for the worst after mammogram and biopsy but got my results yesterday at its bengin. Please come back and let us know. Everyone has been so supportive here and I'm staying in the hope I can help others. I'm having some blood tests done this week and I've to monitor my tumor but in a way it been a blessing to wake me up to be aware xx

  • Thank you Kelbelash, that is a little reassuring and I'm so pleased for you that yours turned out to be benign. I guess this is why they are the medical experts and we are not! I will definitely post on here about how I get on either way as I've found it really useful to read other people's experiences of the clinic.

  • Is it today you go if so good luck. I see you have just had a baby. I've seen a lot of people on here the last few weeks who have found lumps after birth and it turned out to be because of clogged ducts and other breast milk related issues. I hope it turns out to be something like this for you. I will be thinking of you today x

  • I'm done already! It was a milk filled cyst (hence why the antibiotics I'd taken had done nothing for it). So relieved. I was in and out within 15 mins. It was such a good set up and I felt reassured as soon as I stepped through the door - more for feeling like if it was cancer then there is a whole army of people there to help treat it.

I was convinced it couldn't be a cyst as it didn't move but just shows why we should ignore Dr Google. Hopefully this gives hope to others going through something similar, I know I found it reassuring to see others posts.

  • Brilliant was thinking it was something like this as you have just had a baby. Glad you went though its always best to be sure! If anything it will make you more aware now of any changes in the future.

  • I'm glad the worries are over for you x

  • Hi

Has anyone on here opted to go privately to speed things up.  I went to GP a few weeks ago, with breast pain, but couldn't be referred until this week because I was on holiday.  I have today had a phone call and appointment is not until 1 September.  Things have been delayed due to COVID.  I have had all sorts of aches and pains and I'm really scared.  I'm thinking it may be worth the cost of going privately to speed things up.  Any advice gratefully received.

I have found reading the posts on here quite reassuring and it's lovely to see when you have had positive outcomes.

Since posting this I have phoned re a private consulation, but the appointment will not be much quicker, so I think I'm just going to have to wait.

    Thanks

  • I found my lump 3 weeks ago and saw my GP as soon as possible. She referred me for an emergency appointment and said I should hear within 3 days and have my appointment within 2 weeks. After I had heard nothing for a week,  I contacted the number given to me and they said that they were overloaded and I would only hear from them in 3-4 weeks about an appointment date. I tried the private route and was assured by the private hospital that the consultant available was a breast specialist. He was not - he was an endocrinologist!! So I cancelled that and have now been referred to a different trust waiting list - but the 2 weeks timeline apparantly starts again.

The headline about being referred and freaking out is very real!
