Really concerned... one swollen tonsil and other symptoms.

Hi all,

I'm new here…

I don't really know what I am looking for coming on here to chat, as I know none of you will be able to diagnose me… I guess I'm just looking for somewhere to vent and see if anyone can shed any light at all on my situation and what I am experiencing. It'd be great to hear from others who have been in similar circumstances :)

I'm 22 years old, and have been suffering for the past 2 months with an array of symptoms, which I believe could be either lymphoma or tonsil cancer. I have no risk factors for tonsil cancer (I don't smoke or drink and I am well under the age bracket) however I do for lymphoma (I had gladular fever when I was 18 and my great aunt has had lymphoma, although I realise this is not an immediate family member)

Firstly, I noticed one day whilst brushing my teeth that my right tonsil was hugely larger than the other. It takes up I would say a third of my throat, and is hard to the touch. At the time, it was not painful and this was the only symptom I had experienced. I had been aware that my tonsil was larger than the other a few months before I started worrying about this so I have no idea how long it has been this way (although the first time I noticed it, it wasn't as big as it is now.) So of course as many do, I took to my best friend/worst enemy Google, and immediately found all sorts of horrible things this could be. Everything pointed at tonsil cancer or lymphoma due to the asymmetry in my tonsils… and so I then went to see my GP straight away.

He sent me away for a week to see if it went down on its own… it did not. I went back the week after and he put me on a course of antibiotics which did nothing to take down the swelling apart from making me really sick. He then took some blood tests and all my blood counts came back fine, except I was low on iron and B12 which he has prescribed me a 6 month course of tablets for. He referred me to an ENT however, as he could see how worried I was about this.

I do not have private healthcare so this referral was through the NHS, unfortunately after 3 weeks the appointment had still not come through, so I decided I really could not wait any longer and so booked myself in to see a private ENT consultant whom I used to see when I was younger for ear problems. I decided to pay for this. During this 3 week wait, I started to develop some more symptoms. My ears are very painful, and I feel like there is a constant pressure on them and on my neck and jaw (it is hard to explain). It has been quite intense and painful and difficult to ignore. I also keep feeling like my heart is stopping? (I know its not) as though someone is sitting on my chest and I cant catch my breath quickly enough. My GP said this could be due to my low iron however as this is a symptom of anemia. I have no swollen lymph nodes, however I did have one that was quite painful under my arm but that seems to have gone down now...

The ENT took a look at my tonsils and asked me lots of questions about my symptoms. He also felt my neck and head for swollen nodes but said they felt normal. He said I did the right thing by going to see him, and that he did not think my tonsils indicated anything sinister but that I should schedule a tonsillectomy just incase. I am due to have my tonsils out in 3 weeks, and they will send them for tests which will take a week to know if it is malignant or not.

I am super worried, and this is causing me unbelievable amounts of anxiety and stress. I am constantly miserable and cant help but think the absolute worst, especially now the pressure on my ears and jaw is constantly there, it is a constant reminder of how ill I feel. Whilst I know that realistically, the pressure and soreness in my ears, throat and jaw could be unrelated to my tonsils, I cant help but think that this is definitely cancer. I also realise that I do not have the classic symptoms of any swollen lymph nodes either so I could be overreacting for nothing.

I would just really like to hear from anyone who can possibly relate to how anxious Im feeling waiting to find out what is wrong, and anyone who has been in a similar situation. I cant talk to my family or boyfriend about how I feel as they just tell me im being crazy and fob me off. They're not interested at all especially my mum. :(

If you made it all the way through this horrifically long post, thank you! I wish you all the best, and thanks in advance for any help.

  • Will do  hun.

    you too xxx

  • Hi All,

Have just been reading through. I am going through a horrible anxious few weeks concerning my tonsil!

I'm 29 and have one tonsil extremely swollen, no pain, severe ear ache constantly!

Was urgently referred to the ENT department. The lovely consultant there took one look at my tonsil and decided he was going to take a biopsy there and then which I was so not expecting, I thought I would have a separate appointment.. wasn't very pleasant but not awful! He said I have an ulcer/crater that he is concerned about as he wouldn't expect to see a tonsil looking like that at my age.. which of course has tipped me over edge panicking.

1 week later I had an MRI on my neck with contrast dye, again that wasn't terrible either.

what is terrible is the waiting for the results.. I genuinely haven't slept properly in 2 weeks!

Booked in on Sunday with the consultant and I am so scared.

  • Hi jessieka

sorry to hear you are going through this. What is good though is you have had that referral. Hopefully it isn't anything to worry about, but if it is you have dealt with it quick.

im off for a blood test today... FBC and diabetes check. I don't know how that is connected to weird sensations on my tongue or sore throat and swollen tonsil but I'm going to roll with it. Still waiting for my ultrasound results, and I totally agree it's the worst part, waiting to see if anything is going to be picked up! I'm trying to convince myself that everything is ok, although I still have this weird spot on my tongue.. the professionals have said it looks fine!

please come back at let us now how your appointment goes on Sunday! Fingers crossed well! X

  • Hey

I've just been reading all these as having the same symptoms for a year! Have you had your results back yet?
    x

  • Hi Berry1,

I had some results back from the scans and the biopsy of my tonsil. The mri has shown a mass at the base of my tongue and one up my nose. I am now scheduled for a tonsillectomy next week where they will obviously remove both tonsils for further biopsy's and they will be taking samples from my tongue and nose. So not really any further to knowing what is going on. Hope you are ok. Have you seen an ent consultant or a gp?

  • Oh bless you, good luck with the tonsillectomy! Do keep us updated with your recovery, glad to hear they are still going ahead at the moment.
GP has me booked for a chest X-ray, if all clear I'll get referred to ENT. I've always had tonsillitis a lot even when a child but it's now just all on one side, one tonsil, ear and neck. Coming back every few weeks.
This thread has been reassuring though and I've found a group for "Long Covid" and weirdly lots of people seem to have similar symptoms going on that had covid last year.

Take it easy for your Op and wish you all the luck and speedy recovery. Xx

  • I was told on Monday when I last seen the consultant that it could be up to a 4 week wait so I'm really lucky to not have to wait so long!

Fingers crossed that your x ray comes back clear as if you get referred to the ent they will be able to get to the bottom of your symptoms!

I didn't really suffer with tonsilitis as a child, but did have several bad bouts of it last year.

I am only 29 so I know I have my age on my side in regards to anything being cancerous, but even still it's such a worrying time. I'm a mum of 2, luckily have my partner at home with me at the minute.

Thanks very much and do let us know how you get on too :) xx

  • Hi I'm in a similar position but worrying about cancer and the consequences of an untreated bacterial infection. I've had tonsil trouble for at least 25 years and after a bad infection one tonsil is permanently swollen. I've mostly had mild tonsillitis but have had a quinsy and a couple of worse infections. Had symptoms of infection happen very fast in mid January, swollen, ***, painful tonsil, painful lymph nodes in neck and inflamed throat with ulcers and small blisters and what looked a little like a small abcess on the tonsil. Treated with antibiotics fett better in a few days the small abcess went down but left a small hole that's healed, the blisters receded but have some left but then a few days after the course the problem started again but with fewer symptoms. Was concerned that the antibiotic wasn't strong enough or appropriate but put back on same one, same problem happened again. Spoke to a GP today who basically told me that the surgery couldn't prescribe and that I needed a cancer referral and a swab. Picked up a swab but had to work out how to do it by watching online videos so not sure if I did it correctly, and got a text later that day for a phone appt. with an ENT next week.

I'm worrying about cancer obviously but equally worrying about the consequences of an untreated bacterial infection spreading, it's getting increasingly painful. Will the ENT appt also look into the infection symptoms and prescribe if necessarily? I also seem to have developed oral thrush from the antibiotics and I have periodontal disease and have not been able to have my regular cleaning treatments becaue of the pandemic, so not sure how those might contribute to symptoms. I'm also wondering if there's anywhere I can book - including privately - that has ENTs who will examine my throat fairly urgently? I'm keen to avoid A and E as my partner is clinically vulnerable. I'm in the London area.

  • Just thought I'd add to this thread as I've found it helpful and this might help others. I've had similar symptoms that are ongoing. Noticed an enlarged right tonsil about 4 weeks ago with a white top and more recently a whitish patch at the base. Very round and perfectly formed and no other symptoms apart from some hoarseness and needing to clear my throat regularly.

I sent a video of my throat to the GP who referred me to ENT and I saw a Consultant earlier this week. Having taken one look down my throat and feeling my neck he suggested an MRI which I was quite worryingly booked in for the next day. Before the MRI I was also scheduled in for an appointment 2 weeks later with the consultant. Had the MRI with the dye injected and then the dread of waiting started. Lasted 2 days and then got in touch with the secretary and asked if the doctor could call me to give me a heads up on the results as I was very anxious. Thankfully got a call today to say the MRI was clear and that my tonsils bizarrely did not show up as being too different in size. He told me that it was very reassuring.

I still need to attend my appointment and there may still be a need for a biopsy. The symptoms have however not subsided and my throat has become a bit more painful with neck ache. Definitely lost my appetite last few days as well but this could of course just be anxiety. Be good to get to the bottom of what it is but I can at least rest a bit more easy now!
