Waiting for breast biopsy, out of my mind with worry

hi everyone, I noticed a lump on my right breast and went to breast clinic. I'm 33 so they did an ultrasound - they said there is a patchy lump about 3cm big and that 2 lymph nodes look swollen on the ultrasound (but not to touch).

I panicked and immediately assumed cancer and everyone else started talking like it's cancer too, saying stuff like 'we'll treat it' and that once the biopsy results come back I should be prepared that treatment will start quickly.

I'm in total panic mode, can't eat or sleep and feel sick constantly, I don't know how I'm going to get through until biopsy results.

I'd like to know, can they tell from an ultrasound whether it's cancer? I thought that's why you need a biopsy? I'm literally out of mind worrying about this :(

Thanks for your help xx

    Hi Elaine,

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear of the position you now find yourself in with your breast. There is no point in worrying yet, as your consultant is just being extra cautious. This is to as much rule out any malignancy as to confirm it.

If there is any doubt at all, this is the normal procedure. I agree that the wait for tests is one of the most scary times of the entire cancer journey, but here's hoping that all is benign. Of all the people referred to the breast clinic only 1 person in 8 will be diagnosed with cancer, so you could still be oneof the lucky ones.

Can you bring someone with you to your appointment next week? It is always a good idea to do this. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi. Sorry to bother you. I'm in the same situation as you were in 2015. They couldnt measure the size of the lump and now awaiting biopsy results. Going insane. Just wondered what your outcome was? Regards. Sara

  • Hi Sara

Mine was triple positive breast cancer but often these biopsies come back with far less sinister explanations such as cysts etc. I know it's easy to say, but try not to worry until you have all the information. When did you have your biopsy?

  • It was only yesterday and already feels like a life time! Thanks for letting me know,. What treatment did you end up having? Sara x

  • Hi Sara. No need to apologise for being on this forum. It’s what it’s for. Most of us have experienced, or are experiencing, many of the feelings that are churning around in you at the moment. Having said that, we all respond differently and no two personal experiences are the same.

It’s rotten waiting to know what you are or aren’t dealing with. Some of us don’t want too much information and just want to just get on with it, others (like me) want to know every last detail and read up beforehand.

Even if your lump is a cancer, it may be early stage and/ or low grade and therefore easier to treat. But whatever the outcome of your biopsy, you will deal with it, and in your own way.

Always happy to discuss. Best wishes. Sandie

  • Time seems to slow down when you're waiting for results!

mine was invasive ductal carcinoma, triple positive, and the main lump was 6cm and surrounding lymph nodes involved. I had chemo, mastectomy and radiotherapy. I didn't seem to have too many side effects apart from losing my hair. I just had reconstructive surgery at the end of Sept, so now have a new boob!

It all seems pretty daunting when you're waiting for the results. I have everything crossed for you that it's something pretty mundane. We're here for you either way though, so shout if you need anything x

  • Shelles29. I hope you dont mind me asking about your results 6 years later? I'm waiting for my biopsy results and having a dreadful time. Regards. Sara

  • These threads are the only thing keeping me sane atm, and im never normally anxious!

im 28 and found a 1-2cm lump under my nipple, 10 weeks later after struggling to see a DR and extra wait for breast clinic (thanks covid!) ive had my ultrasound (inconclusive) and 3 biopsy tests. They said they have no idea what it is, its not a cyst though, she looked so confused! been the hardest week and MDT is not until friday, im looking forward to being able to get some sort of closure and move forward, good or bad.

  • Hi GossipGirl,

I'm sorry to hear about the anxiety you have surrounding your breast lump. There are a number of reasons for breast lumps which are not cancerous, particularly in younger people. It is always particularly frustrating when your test results are inconclusive and I hope that the MDT will be able to decide on the next step, without having to carry out any further tests.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi. My story sounds very similar and I am back next week for the results. I'm a bag if nerves and always fear the worst. They didn't say much and couldn't say what it was.

    Please keep me updated.

    Regards
