Waiting for breast biopsy, out of my mind with worry

hi everyone, I noticed a lump on my right breast and went to breast clinic. I'm 33 so they did an ultrasound - they said there is a patchy lump about 3cm big and that 2 lymph nodes look swollen on the ultrasound (but not to touch).

I panicked and immediately assumed cancer and everyone else started talking like it's cancer too, saying stuff like 'we'll treat it' and that once the biopsy results come back I should be prepared that treatment will start quickly.

I'm in total panic mode, can't eat or sleep and feel sick constantly, I don't know how I'm going to get through until biopsy results.

I'd like to know, can they tell from an ultrasound whether it's cancer? I thought that's why you need a biopsy? I'm literally out of mind worrying about this :(

Thanks for your help xx

  • Hi Beth, i'm feeling exactly the same as you at the moment :-( I'm 41, and i found a large lump in my right breast and had my breast clinic appointment today. I had a mammogram of both breasts, an ultrasound of both breast and right armpit. I aslo had a biopsy of the lump and node in the armpit.

The waiting is torture isn't it??!!!!

I have an appointment to get the biopsy result on 23 Feb which is going to feel like forever. I have also been refered for an MRI scan because they said they couldn't measure the size of it.

I know people say most lumps are not cancerous, but it's difficult to not let your mind run riot. I have been going over and over what they said to me today, and analyzing every little sentence, tone of voice they used and their body language.

The nurse doing the scan went to get the consultant, she then did the scan again, the nurse couldn't get the needle in the lump to get a sample, so the consultant had to do it. I  kept hearing them saying it was large and 'hard as rock'

The consultant leaned in close towards me and rubbed my arm while she said 'i'm affraid there's a lump', i felt like saying 'i know there is, that's why i'm here'. I don't know if it was her way of saying it's a cancerous lump, without actually saying it. Then the last nurse i saw just looked sad when she spoke to me, and when i got up to leave the room she also rubbed my arm and looked at me with a certain 'look'.

When are you getting your biopsy results?

I thought they could tell just from a mammogram and ultrasound scan as well, I got the feeling they knew, but didn't want to say until after the biopsy results. It's going to be a bloody horrid 2 weeks :(

But you're not alone, i'm going through exactly the same, and i'm sure there are lots of others out there as well xx

  • Hi I'm going through exactly the same thing I went in to what I thought have my cyst drained had mammogram and ultrasound and was told it was hard and had to have 3 biopsies from my breast 1 bent the needle as my lump is that hard and 2 from armpit, I have to wait now for a week for the results and I'm going out of my mind, do you mind me asking what your results came back as

  • Hi Tracey , I have same as you , both boobs though! How are you? Lisa

  • Hi. I'm waiting my biopsy results too. Go back 1st December after a recall following routine mammogram. I have a lump in my right breast. I'm trying to stay strong for the family, but inside I'm just panicking. Husband has stuck his head in the sand and won't discuss it. 2 sons (24 & 21) who are the same. I feel like I'm carrying this worry all by myself and end up awake half the night crying alone. And it's only been 3 days since the biopsy. Another 4 nights to go before I'll know one way or the other. It is reassuring to find thsee posts and support as I too thought I was the only one, worrying about something that may not even be, so thank you all for having the strength to share your stories on here, for the benefit of us all.
  • Absolutely terrified, results tomorrow, I wish I could tell my other half to go for me to get the result and then just come home and tell me I'm fine
  • Hello jjjames,

  • Hi all. I've been reading the posts you all lovely ladies have written and it does make me feel better as I'm not alone. I've had mamogram,  scan and biopsy yesterday.  It wasn't nice at all and at the same time, they have inserted some kind of clip. I feel like a dog who's been chipped.  My scan and mamogram were normal but as my breasts are very densed,  they wanted to make sure what was the shadow in my left breast.  Needless to say,  I'm petrified and don't think I can wait till Monday for the results.

Big hugs to all of you lovely ladies.

  • Hi

What was your diagnosis? I have no lump but the dr said I have thickening after a routine exam (which I couldn't even feel). I have the same ache/burn sensation all under my arm pit/shoulder blade ans even down my arm. This was put down to a trapped nerve in my shoulder 18months ago but obviously now with the breast thickening and the pain still there it's worrying.

I have an appointment in 11 days time under the 2 week rule but worried as have had rhis ache for 18months!

Just wanted to know how you got on?

  • Hi I've just found this thread, and I'm so sorry for all the ladies here and men. I suffer with huge anxiety and panic attacks and my worst nightmare is being ill but I found a lump a while ago and eventually saw it wasn't going away so I told my grown up daughters and they insisted I see the doc. I got an appt in the same week to go for mammogram etc, which is tomorrow, friday and I'm absolutely terrified. It is a little heartening to see I'm not the only one feeling this bad .. I feel sick all the time and no matter what I do it's always on my mind and I dread hearing the results. Thank you everyone for writing here so that we know we're not alone.
  • I went for my appt, and to cut a long story short, it was nothing to worry about at all. The mammogram, the ultra sound and the biopsy were nothing like I had read and thought they would be like. The biopsy, my worst terror, I didn't even feel, a slight scratch when they put in the numbing agent, and after that nothing .. just 5 small clicks as they did the procedure .. and now it's the next day and I have had to only have 2 anadin .. I probably didn't even need those but it was starting to prickle a bit, and I sleep on that side. Woke up this morning and a bit sore but once I moved it was fine, I have no pain at all now. So please don't worry, just work with them, and tell them your concerns and i'm sure they will make sure you have a painfree experience .. I have to wait now two weeks, they think there is something there .. so that's the next worry but I am so pleased to say so far it's been pain free
  • You’re very lucky that your biopsy was pain free. I get my results on Wednesday, after waiting nearly 3 very long weeks. The biopsy was horribly and the most painful thing ever (out of 8 samples taken I cried out on 2 of them as it hurt so much.) And it took over 40 mins to do it as they were having problems with the equipment.

However, i’ve put that experience behind me - but as the day draws closer I’m getting more and more scared. Finding it very difficult to focus at work. Keeping strong for Wed.

  • Waiting for results is so tough - went to GP for lump in right breast , which was indeed a cyst. Assumed in the clear only to get a recall for a suspicious area in my left breast. Vacuum biopsy last week - which was painful , but only for a short time and not long to recover. Results due tomorrow. My husband died last year after being diagnosed with terminal cancer completely out of the blue, so am stealing myself for the worse.
  • Hi Shuni

I'm so sorry you had such a painful experience ..  funnily enough today,  4 days after I'm getting stabbing pains in my breast but not near to the biopsy area, so I don't know what that can be.

I wish you the very best of luck with your results, mine will be another couple of weeks I think and like you, I'm dreading it but trying to take my  mind off of it.  Fingers crossed
