Ive just received abnormal smear results and i have symptoms of advanced cervical cancer

Hi im hoping for some advice,

Ive suffered from heavy periods all my life, yet 7 months ago i started experiencing large clots, also i started suffereing from fizzing/numbness constantly in my right leg, and constant lower dull back pain, along with bleeding inbetween my periods. I 'googled' these and found they are all symptoms of advanced cervical cancer !!!!

I took myself to the doctors for a smear test and my results have just come back as High-grade dyskaryosis!

Im convinced i have advanced cancer now and am awaiting a coloscopy in 3 weeks time.

Did anybody else experience these symptoms before their test also? Or am i right in thinking mine has probably already progressed??

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi Jemma,

I know how difficult it is and how worried we can be, but please try not to drive yourself crazy with worry right now. You noted the report says you have “abnormal cells” and this doesn’t necessarily mean they are cancerous. My first abnormal smear was in December of 2016, and I’ve been having smears every 6 months since then. This June I had my second Colposcopy and still I’m showing “abnormal cells” but thankfully no cancer

I am HPV negative, but I know several woman who are HPV positive with abnormal cells and no cancer.  I’ve been told most of the time our bodies get rid of these cells all on their own without any intervention. If they don’t, there are procedures which they can do to remove them. Hopefully they will do your Colposcopy real soon and let you know what’s going on. Until them try not to get yourself too upset... Wishing you all the best  keep us posted

  • :)Thank you for your response, I know I shouldn’t look to far into things. It’s just such a shock when you read the letter. I think hearing other people’s outcomes and story’s are a real help too. I think maybe a booklet with some quotes from this website and the discussions on it if consented too could be included in with the letter to help with people’s anxiety these discussions have really helped. fingers crossed my appointment with arrive soon. And I will post my outcome. Thank you again.

  • Hi,

Can I just check exactly what your letter said?

Here’s my story: I had my smear, results came back fo say I have HPV and low grade abnormal cells. I started to have lots of symptoms, brown discharge, pelvic pain that wouldn’t go away, ‘didn’t feel right’, sex felt uncomfortable. I had my Colposcopy on Tuesday and the consultant said he hasn’t found anything concerning but took a biopsy to be safe. I have to say I was beside myself with worry I truly had been a state for 4 weeks. I’m also having an ultrasound next week to rule out anything else. Doctors think it could well be hormonal.

I can’t give any medical advice but what I would say is try not to worry, I know it’s really hard, the Colposcopy experience was absolutely fine they were lovely and understanding.

I hope you’re ok - take a deep breathe and try not to worry xx

  • Hello,  the letter states I am positive for hpv which can cause high risk of cervical cancer and I have borderline abnormal cells. I just hope I get an appointment soon as I already suffer with anxiety so this is sending into overdrive.

    Thank you xx

  • I completely understand your worry I was the exact same. My letter stated the same as yours and the consultant was happy that he couldn’t see to worry about, so hopefully you will have the same outcome. Even if they were high grade changes, that does not usually mean cancer but that those cells may develop into cancer in the future (still unlikely and if so would usually take a long time).

    Xx

  • Thank you so much you have put my mind at ease I just needed to hear someone’s outcome with the same sort of letter as mine. I really think a leaflet with peoples experiences and outcomes would help if they gained consent this could be put in with the letter when they send it.

    Thank you you so much

  • I completely understand and agree with you! Feel free to keep in touch I’ll be happy to try and answer any questions you have as a number of other people did the same for me while I spent 4 weeks waiting for my appt and it really helped.

    Xxx

  • Hello.

Im just wondering if you have had an update?

Im bleeding heavily, and am waiting on an ultrasound appointment and my smear is in november. Im a year and a half overdue my smear

Just need my mind put at ease. Doctor has given me tranexamix acid to stop the bleeding in the meantime, but i want it to run its course naturally and hope tor the best x

  • Hello,

i got my results last week and they are just sending me for yearly smears and keeping a close check for now, said there are abnormal cells however there are no significant changes.

I know it’s easy to say but honestly try not to worry there is nothing you can do until you have your ultra sound. I would say take the tranexamic acid as this May effect the ultrasound if you are still bleeding heavily and it will give them a better idea of what is going on if they can work out if the tablets have worked in stemming the bleeding. The bleeding could be a number of things it may not be related to anything and your smear may come back clear a year and a half seems a long time however people have gone without smears for a lot longer and they have been fine.

    i hope this helps. X
