Ive just received abnormal smear results and i have symptoms of advanced cervical cancer

Hi im hoping for some advice,

Ive suffered from heavy periods all my life, yet 7 months ago i started experiencing large clots, also i started suffereing from fizzing/numbness constantly in my right leg, and constant lower dull back pain, along with bleeding inbetween my periods. I 'googled' these and found they are all symptoms of advanced cervical cancer !!!!

I took myself to the doctors for a smear test and my results have just come back as High-grade dyskaryosis!

Im convinced i have advanced cancer now and am awaiting a coloscopy in 3 weeks time.

Did anybody else experience these symptoms before their test also? Or am i right in thinking mine has probably already progressed??

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi, I am going through similar. I'm 44, never had kids and went my whole life without a smear (I feel so stupid). I plucked up the courage today to go and have a smear as started getting weird symptoms about 5 days ago. Constant mild period pain without being on my period and today just started getting lower back pain and sciatica type pain down leg. Was told the results will probably take less than 2 weeks as they are not v. busy at the moment. I am also wondering if I should contact my GP as they may be able to run some other tests and maybe fast track me if needed. Not 100% sure what my options are at this point.

You posted in April. Did you make any progress? Did you get your colposcopy?

  • Hey sorry I'm only seen this now . I have had 4 llettz treatments done altogether, last one was done on the 9 of December 2020 I have had none stop bleeding somethings like spotting bleeding durning and after sex a lot of blood, I have dull pain in my back and sides sometimes like a stabbing itchy skin all over and pain like my legs are going to explode I have rang my GP no one got back to me so I rang my consultants office and they are sending out appointments I have high grade cells and HPV they keep coming back I'm very scared

  • Hey, im sorry to hear this...

Did you have the llettz to attempt to get rid of the high grade cells or for another reason? How long has this been going on for?

Hopefully since you wrote this comment you've had some better news! x

  • Hi,

I have had a couple of smears all have been fine until my recent one which showed mild changes, I was referred to colposcopy and had a biopsy done this has shown a different story and has been taken to the end of month meeting being held tomorrow.  They suspect I will have LOOP treatment.  I am concerned as to why these changes have come about and worried that, as 12 years ago I had pelvic pain, Irregular bleeding and pain during sex that cells have been developing over a number of years and fallen under the radar at smears.  I too have a lot of pelvic pain routinely now, swelling, intermittant numbness down my right leg and changes in bowels.  I don't know what to think. I have told the nurses that if it was an option I would opt for a hysterectomy but they advice me that that wouldn't be the first line of treatment as it is massive surgery. My mind is going into overdrive. Sending you thoughts and hugs, what a horrible time x

  • Hi Katherine

You may not get a response from the original poster as they have not been on the forum for several years, so I hope you don’t mind me replying.

Abonormal cells, which are not cancer,  are routinely treated by the treatment suggested to you. A hysterectomy would definitely not be the first line of treatment, and in any case would not remove the HPV virus which has caused the cell changes.

Smear tests are not infallible unfortunately, so it may be that you have had abnormal cells for some time which have not been picked up before. It would normally take years and years for these cells to become cancer, so try not to worry too much at this stage. Having the loop treatment is normally sufficient to remove the area of abnormality, so hopefully this is all that you will need done.

  • Hi Sophie

The original poster never posted again and hasn’t been active on the forum for almost 8 years so it’s probably unlikely they’ll see and respond to this.

If you are having symptoms as you describe, especially after menopause, have you been to the doctor? I don’t mean for a smear, but for symptom investigation? You should do this, rather than reading scare stories from someone who has never returned to explain what happened with them, as their story will not be yours. The original poster had a diagnosis of pre cancerous, abnormal, cells and made some very rash assumptions by self diagnosing herself on the internet which clearly would be a little scary for someone else reading the post. The best thing you can do is see the doctor and get facts, not supposition. x
