My First Colposcopy after Abnormal Smear - Don't Worry!!

Hello,

I felt I should write something here on this forum regarding my first Colposcopy. There never seems to be a follow up when somebody has had a colposcopy and I would like to share my experience with you.

It all started when I had my very first abnormal smear result. My previous 2 smear tests had been normal.

My first reaction was panic! I started to google cervical cancer and was left in a state of anxiety. I was convinced that this was it for me.

It didn't help that my abnormal smear was showing high grade dyskaryosis, the words "high grade" were very upsetting.

After 2 weeks of waiting and worrying my colposcopy appointement had arrived. I was a bag of nerves whilst in the waiting room. All I could think is this is really going to hurt and scared that the Dr was going to tell me I had the big C!

When my name was called I thought "this is it, my fate will be decided now". The Dr sat down with me and the first thing he said was, "you do not have cancer". In my mind I was thinking, you haven't even had a look yet, how do you know?

Basically, an abnormal smear comes about from a change in the cells of your cervix. It does not mean you have cancer. It can take up to 20 years for cancer to develop and that's only IF the cervical cancer is activated.

The Dr explained alot to me and made me feel at ease. Next it was the colposcopy......

My advise is to wear a long lose fitting skirt like I did, otherwise you'll have to walk from the little changing room to the chair with you little tush hanging out!

I had to sit in a big chair that had to bits either side to put my legs on. All you need to think is how many women have colposcopy's everyday and what the Dr is seeing is no more than what he or she sees everyday. That is what they are qualified in.

The nurse then helps you get comfortable and stays right by your side all the way through it.

When you are ready, the Dr puts the same kind of speculum inside you that is used for your smear test, then there is a kind of funny looking set of binoculars thing that sits on the outside of you vagina, they do not go inside. The Dr then opens you up.

THIS DOES NOT HURT - It may feel a bit uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt. It feels no different to the smear.

I didn't need any treatment so I cannot comment on that but I did however need a biopsy - which again didn't hurt. I was told to do a huge cough on the count of 3 and that was it, biopsy done.

I would recommend looking at the screen to the side of you, of your cervix so you can see what the Dr is seeing, he/she can then explain to you the condition of your cervix.

This all took less than 15 minutes.

You should take a sanitary towel with you as afterwards there can be some blood or discharge.

For the rest of that day I had period cramps which is normal. They can last 2 to 3 days - everybody is different. You will also have a brown coloured discharge. This can last 3-4 days - again everybody is different.

So to conclude - The worry comes from not knowing. If this is all new to you then worry is at the top of your list but now I have had it done once, I know what to expect if it happens again in the future and I KNOW it isn't half as bad as you expect it to be.

I hope this has helped a few women out there and if you have any questions please contact me and I'll try to answer them for you.

Thank you.

  • Thanks a lot for your reply, Kat!
Because my smear was abnormal, I am having colposcopy next week (they sent the invite last week). I am worried about them changing the apps because of COVID-19 but I found the guidelines and it says that, in some cases, they proceed with colposcopies.
thank you for your positivity. I think (like everybody else here) I am freaked "what if". Usual stuff.
hope you and your loved ones are safe and thank you again for replying :)

  • Yes, you're likely to have 6 month follow ups like me then - unless it is grade 2 or 3 and they potentially might do the treatment. They'll go through the options with you in the appointment. As I'm in my late 20s, when there are often changes, they are checking on me every 6 months. If in June the abnormalities have increased, they will then give me treatment.

There are pros and cons to this. Pros: 1) they're giving your body a chance to fight it off and 2) I potentially don't need to have the treatment which would involve me having to be put out under general anesthetic (I can't have local and even general disagrees with me). Cons: 1) It's a waiting game and 2) I have to try and get booked in for a wax to get my vagina out for the world every 6 months If you don't laugh, you'll cry, so always try to see the funny side.

It's easier said than done, but just try not to panic and focus on the fact you're in the best hands. You definitely do have the what ifs. All of us do at some point. But we all seem to catastrophise it, naturally.

Don't worry about the actual procedure - you're in and out within minutes. The nurses try to relax you the best they can and I was surprised at how little it hurt. It's very similar to a smear (which I don't find painful) and the biopsy is the only part that "hurt". I say hurt as the first smaller one didn't hurt at all and the second larger one was a short instant pain, like someone pinching you - you feel it, but it's not a significant pain.

I find people being truthful about it helps you to process it easier

  • Hi, I know it's been a long time since you posted this. I had my first smear test in March (I've just turned 27 and have been sexually active on and off for 3 years.) My results came back today, I'm high risk HPV and have abnormal cells. I've been referred for a colposcopy and currently awaiting the appointment letter. I'm so scared, I've never felt a fear like this in my life. I know it doesn't mean I have cancer but I'm so scared that the follow up will find that I do. How can I stay calm until I get the letter. I just want to get it done and be told that I'm fine. I'm scared I'm going to die.

  • It feels as though it's the worst news you could ever receive and I'd be lying if I said it gets easier once you get your letter. Your mind will only settle once you have the procedure and even then it is still there in your mind. You're the same age as me, so can completely relate to how you're feeling.

I got my news just after Christmas following my smear in November. With abnormal cells of CIN2 or above, you'll be given an emergency appointment, so should be seen for your colposcopy within 2 weeks of them finding your result - so they are likely to phone you with an appointment. Having a "high" result means you are suspected to be a CIN2 or CIN3.

The most reassuring thing I can tell you is that abnormal cells are common for our age group!!! Following my colposcopy and biopsy, I have been put on 6 month monitoring. This is purely because they do not like to give immediate treatment to our age group as abnormalities often sort themselves out. Also, 80% of women get HPV at some point during their life. It's not something to see at dirty and can usually live in your body for years, flaring up when stressed, which I think is what happened to me.

The day after Boxing Day I had a phone call out of the blue asking to book my emergency appointment. It was late on a Friday afternoon, which then everywhere closed for what felt like eternity for New Year. I had so many questions that I had nobody to ask, so I'd say I think I've read A HUGE AMOUNT on the Internet about it. Some scares you, some reassuring. Do you have any questions that I could help you with at all? If you're anything like I was, you definitely won't be sleeping right now.

I've actually received a letter this morning rearranging my 6 month monitoring appointment from June at my local hospital (which is overrun by covid-19) to a specialist hospital the other side of the city in mid-May (that doesn't have any reported cases).

  • My letter said I should be invited for the colposcopy within the next 8 weeks, but I keep imagining that whatever it is, will be worse by then and it'll be too late. I took a paracetamol to help try and calm me down and sleep, I've always been an anxious person so news like this doesn't help. I've been researching about what to expect at these appointments, some of it's been reassuring but I just can't stop imagining that I'll be told the worst news.I've also been looking at what other things can produce a positive result and I keep telling myself that it's one of those. I'm trying to process it and put it to the back of my mind until the appointment letter comes through. How did you handle being told there was something found between getting that letter and receiving the phone call for invitiation? If you don't mind me asking, did your colposcopy and biopsy find anything? My results letter also doesn't mention what the changes are, it just says I was tested for high risk HPV which was found and changes in the cells, which was also found

  • Hi so had my smear at the end of December and the results was I tested positive for hpv but they hadn't collected enough cells to see if the were abnormal I had to wait 3 months and have another smear, when it was time for my smear I couldn't have it done due to the coronavirus and no nurses were on site at the doctors, finally after 3 weeks I was booked on for the smear my results came back last week and it said I have high grade severe dyskaryosis and I fell apart I am still waiting on an appointment for my colposcopy. My head has been all over as i am 34 and a mother of 3. Reading your post has put my mind at ease and hopefully my appointment will come through soon

  • Wishing you all the luck and if you have any questions, I'm here to help. I'm quite anxious today as have my appointment at 2pm - although I know the procedure will be fine, its my first time out in 8 weeks and I'm going into a hospital

  • Hope all goes well today can I ask how long from the smear results did you get your colposcopy appointment

  • Hi

I had a result of High grade moderate and HPV positive and my colposcopy is 28th May. So from when i got the letter to appointment is almost exactly 2 weeks.

Results from smear took a week.

    Hope this helps somewhat.

    Bec

  • It went really well thanks. Depending on the results, I'll get my appointment - best case scenario there have been no changes and they'll see me again in 6 month.

I actually got my phone call for an emergency appointment before I received my results. The rule they go by is if its considered an "emergency" (there's an moderate or high abnormality and HPV), they must see you within 2 weeks of your results.
