My First Colposcopy after Abnormal Smear - Don't Worry!!

Hello,

I felt I should write something here on this forum regarding my first Colposcopy. There never seems to be a follow up when somebody has had a colposcopy and I would like to share my experience with you.

It all started when I had my very first abnormal smear result. My previous 2 smear tests had been normal.

My first reaction was panic! I started to google cervical cancer and was left in a state of anxiety. I was convinced that this was it for me.

It didn't help that my abnormal smear was showing high grade dyskaryosis, the words "high grade" were very upsetting.

After 2 weeks of waiting and worrying my colposcopy appointement had arrived. I was a bag of nerves whilst in the waiting room. All I could think is this is really going to hurt and scared that the Dr was going to tell me I had the big C!

When my name was called I thought "this is it, my fate will be decided now". The Dr sat down with me and the first thing he said was, "you do not have cancer". In my mind I was thinking, you haven't even had a look yet, how do you know?

Basically, an abnormal smear comes about from a change in the cells of your cervix. It does not mean you have cancer. It can take up to 20 years for cancer to develop and that's only IF the cervical cancer is activated.

The Dr explained alot to me and made me feel at ease. Next it was the colposcopy......

My advise is to wear a long lose fitting skirt like I did, otherwise you'll have to walk from the little changing room to the chair with you little tush hanging out!

I had to sit in a big chair that had to bits either side to put my legs on. All you need to think is how many women have colposcopy's everyday and what the Dr is seeing is no more than what he or she sees everyday. That is what they are qualified in.

The nurse then helps you get comfortable and stays right by your side all the way through it.

When you are ready, the Dr puts the same kind of speculum inside you that is used for your smear test, then there is a kind of funny looking set of binoculars thing that sits on the outside of you vagina, they do not go inside. The Dr then opens you up.

THIS DOES NOT HURT - It may feel a bit uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt. It feels no different to the smear.

I didn't need any treatment so I cannot comment on that but I did however need a biopsy - which again didn't hurt. I was told to do a huge cough on the count of 3 and that was it, biopsy done.

I would recommend looking at the screen to the side of you, of your cervix so you can see what the Dr is seeing, he/she can then explain to you the condition of your cervix.

This all took less than 15 minutes.

You should take a sanitary towel with you as afterwards there can be some blood or discharge.

For the rest of that day I had period cramps which is normal. They can last 2 to 3 days - everybody is different. You will also have a brown coloured discharge. This can last 3-4 days - again everybody is different.

So to conclude - The worry comes from not knowing. If this is all new to you then worry is at the top of your list but now I have had it done once, I know what to expect if it happens again in the future and I KNOW it isn't half as bad as you expect it to be.

I hope this has helped a few women out there and if you have any questions please contact me and I'll try to answer them for you.

Thank you.

  • Kat12 thank you for replying to me. I didn't know that you could be born with it. I have spoken to my mum and apparently my sister also had a positive result. Flaring up with stress makes complete sense we are trying to move house, my grandmother has been quite ill and I have also had two bereavements in the last 2yrs. My husband keeps trying to reassure me but I suppose I'm still trying to process the letter and have hooked on to that small detail. Hopefully it won't be to long until I hear from the hospital and get the colposcopy appointment.

Thank you again and wishing you all the very best

  • Based on my own research and own experience, I would honestly say that is the cause of the flare up. Just try to take time for yourself to destress (that's my new years resolution). Easier said than done, but try not to get yourself worked up about the colposcopy. It's such a simple procedure and you'll be okay. I've posted earlier in the thread about my experience of it. Although you're waiting after the procedure, it does feel like a relief to have to done.

Sending lots of love and luck. Let us know how you get on and if you've got any questions, post them and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

  • Omg yes!! I have the hpv virus too and feel dirty! Even though most women will get it at some point in their lives. I'm also going for a colscopy because I've had abnormal smear test results. I've already had a biopsy of an ulcer they found on my cervix and will be getting those results Wednesday. Dr google can be pretty scary

  • Really hope it's good news for you. I had a good chat with a lady I work with who has been through this twice, once 10yrs ago and more recently (August 2019) she had a cone biopsy and at her last check all was fine. I know everyone is different but it helped talking to someone who had been through it and as for feeling dirty she gave me a telling off! My appointment is the beginning of Feb.

  • I have mine today, Very nervous I got abnormal results after my 2nd smear test. 1st came back normal then 3 years later I was invited for another, 3 weeks after I had my results I was HPV positive and low grade. Iv had heavy discharge for few years now so as you can imagine I'm thinking the worse! I too felt disgusting after seeing HPV positive however I think that is as common as HPV itself. I was originally booked in for 1 months time however after phoning them I managed to get a cancellation for 4 days time! Deff recommend calling for cancellations. I'm really nervous in just over 3 hours it will all be done, I will update you after mine xx

  • Miss88 thinking of you! Please don't get too worked up about the procedure it was just like having a smear. The lady that did mine was really nice and explained everything to me. She also said that as a non smoker my body should clear the HPV within a year and said I should not feel dirty at all as it's as common as a cold. Sending positive thoughts xx

  • Try not to panic. HPV is so so common! 80% of females have it!!! I've not had any sexual interaction for nearly 2 years and got it - it's not something dirty, it can be brought on by stress. I've had a horrendous 2 years of nothing but stress, so I can only say that that's what has brought it on.

I got my results from coloposcopy on Saturday and am go happy I've got CIN 1 rather than the CIN 2 they initially thought. This is relatively common for women in their late 20s and early 30s to have CIN 1 and 2 as your body is naturally changing. The clinic are going to check me again in 5 months for how my abnormalities are, if they've changed, improved, stayed the same, got worse, etc.

  • That's good so pleased for you :-) and reassuring as I'm 28!
I'm currently sitting in the waiting room my appointment isn't for another 40mins I'm sweating and shaking feel sick to my stomach but know it will hopefully all be over soon.

did the Biopsy hurt? Did they numb the area first?

thank you both for writing back it has really helped me xx

  • Didn't hurt, just uncomfortable. You literally don't need numbing. Try not to stress (I know it's easier said than done). I'm 27, almost 28, so think we're in the same boat! Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
