How long is normal to wait for Biopsy results ???

Hi, this is the first time i've sent a post on here, but i've read more than a few and have already found comfort to know there's someone to talk to. I've had a mammogram and ultrasound which both say i have a 'lump' and two lymph nodes are enlarged. I had a biopsy last Tuesday, they said the results would be 2 - 3 days but it's now over a week ago !! I phoned yesterday but they said when they have the results they'll let me know. I have pains in my back and am scared it might have spread there - or that could be stress? - but I just don't know. I first went to my doctor 5 weeks ago and haven't told anyone, except my husband, as I want to be able to answer my mum and sister's questions in a positive way. But I just don't know.

Also does anyone know if they can tell if it's spread just by the biopsy? They did a 'fine' needle biopsy under my arm, aswell as the four 'larger needle' biopsy on my breast. Would appreciate any help out there, I'm trying to keep positive but it's taking so much time, and I can think of nothing else.

Thanks, June

  • Hi, I know you posted this last year but this is exactly what is happening to me. I rang and was told my case was being discussed last Thursday 14/11/2019.then I get my appointment letter 16/11/2019 but its not to be seen until 26th nov. Seems an awfully long time. Was this like it for you? I am beside myself and would of hoped to get the results sooner.

  • Hi I'm under castle hill in Hull and I had to wait 5 weeks for my biopsy results also I have had surgery and again have to wait another 5 weeks to get the results from that, it's the worst time isn't it, all I can advice is for you to keep busy, read as much as you can, your appointment is the same day as mine, good luck with the results, try to take someone with you, I've been counting down the days just over a week to go now, I'm here if you would like to chat more x

  • Thank you and good luck to you too. We will be back on here with good results. Stay positive (what I keep telling myself)

  • Hi there I am also under the same as you.  Can't praise them highly enough they have been so supportive and understanding. I had a lumpectomy, waited four weeks then had to have further surgery to check lymph nodes which made it all a very long process. Thankfully it hadn't spread. I am now on day 13 out of 15 radiotherapy sessions. The radiographers are great there, it's just the travelling every day as we live over an hour away.

Best advice while waiting for results is keep busy and stay positive. So pleased with the level of care that I felt so supported at all times.

If there's anything you want to ask just let me know.

    Love Mary xx

  • That's great news, did you go to the information clinic? How are you finding the radiotherapy? I'm in withernsea so it will be the same for me  a hour journey if its radiotherapy, they have been amazing there and always being available at the end of the phone is wonderful. Have your been to any support groups I haven't yet find out quite nerve racking.

Good luck for your next two days

  • Hi there yes I went to the information clinic with my husband who found it very interesting too and good to involve partners in treatment.  We live in Bridlington  but my appointments are all around 9.30ish so travelling hasn't been too bad for us.

Im finding the radiotherapy is going ok. No soreness whatsoever. Have been plastering on the E45 cream when I get back from the session and also last thing at night. I'm sure that it has helped keep my skin protected.

Not been to any support groups as they all seem to be focussed in the Hull area and don't want to travel more than I need to.

Good luck with your results and treatment plan

    Love Mary xx

  • Hi sorry to jump on this thread but I had a biopsy in each breast last Friday and have a follow up appointment this Friday do you think that means it's bad news? I know you can't diagnose but I'm terrified!

    Hi Mrslyc,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am sorry that you are in this horrible limboland waiting for test results. It is normal to have a follow up appointment 1-2 weeks after your initial visit to the breast clinic, as most consultants like to give you your results face to face, regardless of whether the news is good or bad.

It is perfectly normal to be terrified at this stage. There are so many unknowns that it is really scary. Only 1 person out of every 8 referred to the breast clinic turn out to have cancer, so the odds are still good for you.

I sincerely hope that it is good news for you on Friday, but even if not, you will find it less scary when you know what is happening. Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Chrisch

Sorry to bother you and I'm glad this thread is still open.

I had a laparotomy done 18/02 and still awaiting biopsy results I have called again today and been told they are still awaiting one result but due to massive delays it may take a lot longer but to call again in 10 days.

In your experience should I think maybe it's clear if they are not rushing?  Or is that wishful thinking?

I really thought they believed it was a strong possibility it was cancerous but surgeon seemed quite positive after surgery although didn't go to plan hence why I'm worrying about the delay.  I have post op appointment 15/04 and wondering if I will even get results before then.

Thanks for reading and any help/advice would be great.

    Hi Emm-a,

I am sorry to hear that you have been waiting so long for your biopsy results. I don't wannt to give you false hopes or to put you into the Doldrums, but the delay could mean something and it could mean nothing. I fear that you may be erring on the side of wishful thinking. This could be a delay due to pressure of work, which could go either way, or they could be doing some further testing, so it could still go either way.

I sincerely hope that you do get your results before you return for your post-op ppointment in April, as this is always a worrying time. I also hope that they are all clear.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
